  • It's been a while since I've done one of these. They are always a pleasure to do. I don't completely like the way the sound turned out, but oh well. I ramble quite a bit in this one, so definitely watch if you are interested in getting a little life update from me.

I'm of the opinion that your ramble greatly contributed to this video. There's something about soft spoken earnesty that makes for an especially strong trigger, at least to me. Before I knew what ASMR was, I would often listen to commentaries and interviews for relaxation. Natural conversation works better than roleplays--again, in my opinion. So what I love about this video is the combination of forced triggers by way of brushing and your soothing voice. What I'm trying to say is: thank you, this is awesome.

Dude, your voice is wicked soothing. Also I agree with you on the whole psychologists should stay a real person thing. If I can't relate to my therapist, they don't really help me. Anyway, great video!

Rob, I have to say. I really like you! Especially in the way that you're the only ASMR person who isn't afraid to swear in their videos. It kinda makes your videos more real and relatable. I also love the way that you're a bit of an over-sharer (like me), and how you bring a bit of humor into your videos. Also, that part about the expectations of being a psychologist, keep doing what you're doing and fight the power bro. Rock on! :D

The book I commented about, on your 'book' release video, was about Mindfulness with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Studies show that it is even more successful than CBT. In that book, it had an exercise that said
'say these words in your head: DON'T THINK ABOUT THE PINK ELEPHANT!'
All I did was imagine a pink elephant haha. It's the concept of not accepting social anxiety and trying to say "I'm not socially anxious", and how that actually makes you more socially anxious. The next exercise made you look around the room (coffee shop BN) and essentially demonstrate mindfulness and how you never thought about the pink elephant. I definitely understood minfulness since I've read about it with Eckhart Tolle and Jon Kabat-Zinn (ALL mindfulness books and workbooks revolve around his books!), but never knew it was able to heal social anxiety.
I'm reading CBT Social Anxiety, and then Mindfulness and hope to combine the two. :)

Good video. I'm in my mood I always get, where I have no motivation to rest, do anything, go anywhere etc. It's like I'm emotionless and everything, annoying sounds or anything minor out of the ordinary, will get me very irritated. When things don't happen perfectly, I get that state. One, someone almost killed me on the highway. She merged and crossed two lanes, where I was in the left lane. Luckily I pulled over and she saw me. Then there was people on the trail I wanted to walk on, and then another trail, so I went home. Found out that my Dad unplugged the computers in the basement. I was in such a good mood, coming home to listen to my book and found out that I couldn't because the files were on the downstairs servers.
So it irritated me because I was in such a good mood to come home, and was stuck in a pickle. Lol.
When those things happened in a row, it just flattened my emotional state.
This video has relaxed my brain and now I can focus on the now, maybe go somewhere and get something to eat (finally go to a restaurant alone and get social anxiety exposure) .

I always come back to your camera brushing videos. They're great. This time while listening to your meditations on your personal endeavors and careers, I was thinking about Dr. Steven Novella. He's a neurologist and assistant professor for Yale University School of Medicine. But I'm aware of him because of a podcast, The Skeptics Guide to the Universe, that he runs with some family members and other friends as cohosts, and his involvement in the skeptical community. They attend DragonCon regularly as a group. He's talked on the podcast about his history with Dungeons and Dragons and even created some materials tabletop games. None of these roles prevent him from being who he is in all of these roles. I think that if you (anyone) are true to yourself and striving to be the best you can be, professionally and personally, then you'll find the passion and knowledge that lead you into your career are the same ones that drive your other endeavors. They aren't mutually exclusive at all, they don't war with each other. If anything, that consistent awareness of self and purpose will probably make you better than some of your peers, regardless of their opinions. Anyway, tangent aside, thanks again for all the work you do. And I hope you're finding some peace with this issue.

Not that I'm any kind of model of happiness and success, but here's my theory: in order to achieve happiness (abstract as it is) and success (in any area or on any level), 'supposed to's should be taken with a pinch of salt. 'Supposed to' probably never helped anyone create something new.

4:45 my story is embarrassing. I had a friend who sat behind me and wrote on my shirt with marker. It was so pleasing. The teacher caught him and literally made him wash my shirt and get the stains out.
His Mom was the home economics teacher, too. So she removed the stains and gave me the shirt back. They asked me why I didn't say anything, or told him to stop.
He's a nice kid. Very very few people liked him and his Mom. His Mom would sweat terribly and people made fun of her.

It is a true talent to make a video that will be viewed by thousands feel so personal and one on one. In regards to what you were saying about feeling pressure to become a sterotypical psychologist... here's my thoughts (just in case you are interested) you can't stop being who you are and expect to be happy long term in any career.
Be who you are. Be authentic... the second you try to be anything different, you are no longer being yourself and eventually you will burn out.
I think what you have managed to do is take an awfully scary situation for millions of people and break it down, so suddenly it is relatable. I only understand "desensitization and reprocessing" etc and other psycho terms because I have studied it. For others, it's too overwhelming.
You have done a great thing for more people than I think you realize.
    Never ever change.

Just wondering if maybe you're planning another encore sounds vid. That is my número uno vid because of all the sounds you used and ended with whispering. My favorite being the very small portion of lip balm you used lol idk why it tingled hard but yeah!

I just did a video like that recently! No lip balm part, though.

Rob, I mean it when I say that you are one of the best asmr artists around, (mainly because I think you seem *really* connected with your viewers) but seriously, please don't conform to their standards the whole time like your peers might, just be true to yourself bud. We all like you the way you are :D

I'm never fully sure why but camera brushing videos are always my favorite videos. xd There is just something about it when done gently that soothes.

Love the sounds in this one... I haven't ever really found a brushing video that I like because I find the sounds to be too harsh, but I think you found a good balance in this one :-) Also... Have you been getting enough sleep?? You look sooo tired in this video!

Thanks for the video man :D loved it, just a small thing, the audio might be a little bit too low, I am using amped headphones and only on 100% audio volume i could hear you.

    • @duffthepsych
      @duffthepsych  10 років тому

Yeah, I had a bit of audio trouble with this one. I bumped it up quite a bit, but the background noise was getting out of hand even with noise removal. I dropped my digital recorder recently and that screwed it up, so I think that might have something to do with it.
