Yep dear John is the anthem for young girls who were taken advantage of. It’s emotionally intelligent and the vocals are SO GOOD. John responds by being like idk she wears dresses sometimes
He kind of just proves the point Taylor makes in dear john but making a song calling her weak lol that's the point bro you took advantage of her she was "too young to be messed with"
Looking at her dating history she doesn’t learn , ig that’s how she makes her money , dating guys and then talking bad about them in her songs when they’re not together anymore
@@spiderguy01 is she not allowed to write based off of her experiences? It's quite a sexist assumption to assume she must be the one who is in the wrong in her past relationships.
@@spiderguy01 not to mention she hasn’t been in anymore relationship than the average person or celebrity so I don’t know what the big deal is with that. And she has been in a happy committed relationship for over 4 years now so I don’t know why you are mentioning her dating life
@@spiderguy01 so many artists do this but you’re just mad because Taylor Swift does it😂 it’s honestly sad. have you listened to any of her other songs?? So many songs aren’t about guys but people don’t care about that. They discredit her talent by saying “ShE oNlY tAlKeS aBoUt GuYs”. Plus she’s been in a committed relationship for like 5 years and has dated an average amount of men. No one is complaining that Ed Sheeran or Harry Styles only write about their experiences with relationships
when John says “you’re like 22 girls in one ” he means exactly that , she’s just too complicated and she’s just confused she doesn’t even know who she is , when he says “was it just too far to fall? For a little paper doll?” He’s like saying “all the things that you said I did to you, and that I was mean to you and rude and stuff , was it too much for you to take? Was it just too far to fall for a little paper doll?” I feel like he’s calling her paper doll instead of using something more offensive like “you’re too weak”
Calling a young woman a "paper doll" is extremely condescending. It's saying she's a "thin" character with no substance that people play with. If you want to go deeper, paper dolls are extremely fragile and can be ripped apart very easily. On the surface it seems like it doesn't make sense but he's actually being quite cruel.
You feeling the need to protect women is more sexist than him calling them a paper doll. I was raised by women they are tough they don’t need you to defend them.
Fr bro except this song isn’t about her lmaoooo ,John just publicly announced on his radio station that this song isn’t about Taylor ,he sat there and watched the world burn and swifties cry for years for no reason ,what a legend fr ,the dude is a genius
Honestly, never mind the fact it was weak, just the fact this came out 3 years later says a lot. Taylor had already moved way past him at this point. Meanwhile he was still stuck on her, and "Dear John" was obviously still eating away at him.
John just said oh his radio station that this song wasn’t about Taylor 🤣😂😆 lmaooo the dude is seriously a legend for sitting there and watching swifties cry for years over a song that wasn’t even about Taylor ,what a legend 😆
I feel like by calling her a paper doll he’s calling her fragile and weak. And the 22 different girls reference is saying she has a lot different sides/personalities and still didn’t know what was really happening in their “relationship” and what she was running from. Also the whole “paint you another sky” she says in Dear John “you paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain”... it’s definitely not the caliber level diss track that Taylor is capable of. But he wasn’t shy in interviews or anything and this was released in 2013 I believe and Taylor released DJ in 2010, and RED in 2012, so 22 was already released by this point. Okay... I’m done rambling now.
The fact that it took him 3 years to come up with this is just... (He somewhere knows it was his fault after all) Also yes 22 was out when this came out
I feel like it was more of a reflection on the relationship than an immediate diss track, plus I think he had bigger things to worry about then writing a response judging by that he had to go into surgery for his vocals and everyone in the media hated him.
John just said publicly on his radio station that this song wasn’t even about Taylor 😂, I swear this man is a fucking legend for sitting and watching the world burn and swifties cry and then going “nah guys you got this one wrong ,the song is not about who you think it is” 😆🤣😂 a genius fr
Taylor Swift at 19: *Writes a beautiful song trying to work through her emotions after an older man wrecked her* John Mayer, a mid thirties man: "This 19 year old girl acted like a 19 year old girl and hurt my big man feelings, feel bad for me!"
Gotta love how when a grown adult worth millions of dollars targets someone and writes what is basically a diss track to publicly humiliate and shame another person, she's "just trying to work through her emotions," and when he responds in-kind, somehow HE's the asshole. Taylor Swift is in her 30s now and half her entire music catalogue is her being bitter and vindictive, essentially weaponizing music to try and get back at people. And trying to excuse it by essentially saying "she was just a kid" is not at all a valid position. She wasn't a kid, and even if she was, that doesn't make being a malicious person okay.
@@mikerotcherson I mean when you date a 19 year old songwriter as a 32 year old man, you've got issues. Meanwhile she's matured a lot if you didn't notice. But go off
@@LeannahW I'm not sure what her being a songwriter has to do with it...other than her being one of the wealthiest most famous mega stars in the world. And since when is 32 "mid thirties"? Was she in her "early twenties"? Again, it's interesting how her age gets used as a crutch when it suits the agenda, but in other cases everyone is perfectly fine with considering 19 a fully grown adult. And again, being a fully grown adult who happens to be young isn't an excuse for being a malicious person. It's odd how people seem to think it actually serves as some kind of pass. Like Lele Pons blames being a horrible person on her being a Latina. It's the most ridiculous excuse of all time, yet the drones buy it hook, line, and sinker. And yeah, Taylor Swift is in her "mid thirties" now (by your definition). One would hope she's matured. But to be honest, it doesn't seem like she has. She still seems to be the same bitter vindictive person she always has been. It seems like the same thing year after year. She has a high profile relationship, it doesn't go well, she paints herself as a victim and puts out a bitter song about it to garner sympathy from everyone, and sometimes the other person will speak out and call her BS (like how Kim released the recording of the convo with Kanye proving Taylor lied.) Everyone she's ever had a relationship with is just a total horrible person, and she's a total awesome and innocent angel? The only constant in all Taylor Swift's failed relationships and friendships is Taylor Swift. At some point you gotta start looking in the mirror.
@@mikerotcherson she's been in the same relationship for 4 years now and barely talks about it, wrote an entire upbeat album and if you listen to her lyrics you'd understand things. 19 isn't a fully grown adult in my opinion and regardless the difference between a 19 year old and a 32 year old is drastically different, just like how she's 31 now and has changed. It's not even wrong of John to write songs about his own feelings, it was a joke comparing the two songs. Her being a songwriter has to do with it because they both dated a songwriter knowing damn well that they'd get a song written about them, good or bad. John whined like hell about it and while I get it, that can't feel good, what did he expect? Her not to write her feelings into a song like she had so many times before? Not inly do her songs cover a wide range of subject's, she's not always the victim and she owns when she messes up. That's maturity. I shouldn't have said mid thirties but you're honestly just lookiing to be offended and start a fight over something that isn't even relevant anymore so good on you I guess, have a nice day
@@LeannahW What is this "upbeat album"? "Don't Blame Me", "Look What You Made Me Do," "Dancing With Our Hands Tied," "So It Goes," "Getaway Car," "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things," "I Forgot That You Existed," "You Need To Calm Down," "Gorgeous," "Tolerate It" ... The list goes on for almost every song on her albums. These don't exactly sound like the songs of someone who has matured and grown out of her "I'm totally innocent, it's everyone else that is the problem" phase. And even if Swift did mature (it has been a decade, so one would hope), 19 years old is not 4 years old. A person knows what malice and vindictive behavior is by the time they're an adult like she was when she wrote and released that song, and she knew exactly what she was doing, and it wasn't just simply "trying to work through her emotions." And it's a pretty ridiculous reach to try and excuse it away by saying "she's a songwriter, he should have known she would do that! What do you expect?" It's honestly kind of an insult to songwriters everywhere. As if being a songwriter means you necessarily have to be a jerk to everyone you feel has ever wronged you in some way, and sic your millions of adoring drones on them. Nothing says you have to release every song you write, let alone put it on a major album release and rotate it into your concert set list. Again, maybe she's finally started to grow out of it, but that was basically her MO for the vast majority of her career. You claim she's not always the victim and she owns when she messes up, but that's the exact opposite of what she was doing literally for years. At the time (and for years after) she would seemingly spend most of her time getting into and out of high profile relationships and feuds and then whine about it in her music and try to paint herself as a perpetual victim, a sweet little innocent girl who can do no wrong and the whole big bad world is just constantly against her. And she's been caught in lies more than once making things up to make herself look better and others worse. It's ironic you'd accuse me of being offended and trying to start a fight when you're the one who made a one-sided short-sighted snarky insulting comment. I just responded calling it out as such.
John is actually a better songwriter tho , most people don’t understand the lyrics because it’s more poetic and less direct and straight forward , he uses metaphors and sometimes you need to listen to the song twice to understand

@@spiderguy01 I understood all of that on first listen. His lyrics are much weaker than hers, and they really don’t roast her or reveal anything about her that helps his case. Dear John has much better metaphors than the ones you just pointed out
The fact that he tried to belittle her for being young and vulnerable by calling her a “little paper doll” when he dated her when she was 19 and he was 32 is ridiculous and reflects poorly on him rather than her.

Paper dolls was released 2013 so yeah the 22 lyric is direct reference because 22 was released in 2012. Also in Dear John Taylor sings "you paint me a blue sky, and go back and turn it to rain" and John Mayer sings "Someone's gonna paint you another sky"
She was the young but definitely HE was the immature one in their relationship and specially in their break up. At least if she was being immature it’s ok, she was 19, but he had no excuse,
He wouldn’t write a “diss track” back because John Mayer always has to be the victim. He wanted to be like “look at this awful mean song she wrote about me she’s crazy she used me” 🙄
Nah , he’s just too smart to write a song like Taylor’s , her lyrics are too easy to understand , and really straight forward , john puts a lot of metaphors in his lyrics , that’s why some people don’t understand , you have to listen to his songs twice sometimes in order to understand

@@mallory1949 I do kinda feel like it in a way was just John trying to get stuff off of his chest. He's denied that it's about Taylor in interviews (even though it is), but he never wanted it to be viewed as a diss track. He's always said he just wanted to be viewed as a normal song. So I think it was really just a way for him to get out what was on his mind. Almost like therapeutic songwriting.
@@TheLocalDJ I mean he clearly thought it was a good enough song to release. But really he just proved the point taylor made in Dear John. He took advantage of her when she was really young, and his response to all that was "you're too young to understand all this relationship stuff". Like okay? That's the point.
Wait so he did or he didn’t bc I see a lot of people saying “how could he do this to her and then call her weak? (paper doll)” and then others saying this was lame and too weak lol ,im not hating btw im just a little confused about the comments
He basically used her name for promo too. She wrote Dear John in 2010 and he starts to talk about being hurt 3 years later when doing the promotions for his CD. And the wrost is... yeah... this song is pretty weak and lame... Not in the same level at all...
He didn't try to promote Paper Doll using Taylor at all. It's just wild gossip tabloid speculation that spread that it was about Taylor. John actually tried to distance this song from the Taylor drama when promoting it
She's literally exposing him for date a 19 girl please what are you talking aboouttt??????!!? his name on the song it's PERFECT AND NECESARY. Taylor is speaking on that song.
I mean he did care like A LOT he did an interview saying he was humiliated by the song and that she should have told him before she released it and that it was wrong of her to do. Her response was basically that dear John or a "dear John letter" is a known saying meaning a letter to a man by a woman ending a relationship so it could be about anyone and that she doesn't name names in her songs. I mean it's clearly about him though and clearly, it hit a nerve in him. I actually haven't heard this song before this video lol it's meh for me but I was never a fan of his so it's not shocking. lol I just mentioned the Joe Jonas song in my comment. If he thought this was lame I can't imagine the reaction to Much Better which was already so bad but then Taylor took it and just demolished it into nothing.
i think with "cut the cord and pull some strings" he is refering how she stopped picking up his calls and in "make yourself some angel wings" he is saying that she is playing innocent. It's nowhere near Dear John.. Taylor also wrote Ours, The Story Of Us, Superman and allegedly I Knew You Were Trouble and Treacherous about him. You should listen to them as well..
I didn't know those songs were also about him! The Story of Us is one of my all-time favorite Swift songs and now I'm seeing in a whole new light, thank you
You must listen to John mayer during this album. That's what this album was about, he moved to montana or something and made like 2 albums sounding like this
I hate the line “and winter runs a bit too small” because he’s talking about clothing sizes and he knows she was struggling with an ED and he’s making fun of it. Even if she didn’t have one at the time, it’s not ok to comment on clothing sizes.
Actually, hate to be that guy, but that lyric is actually most likely referencing the history of their relationship, how they hooked up in the end of fall and then fell out in the winter, not relating to clothing sizes.
@@arlomusicedits1312 I actually agree. I’m not defending him, I’m Tay all the way in this, but I don’t think this lyric has anything to do with nothing sizes either.
This is the kind of song you put out because all your friends are laughing at you because a kid half your age DESTROYED you after you spent so much time laughing about how awful you were being to her, so now you have to put SOMETHING out but the kid was right and you're trash. Like, this is legitimately not even a good song on its own. It's not clever, it's not relatable... It's cookie-cutter. You don't respond to a diss with this.
I literally watched ur Dear John vid like 10 times in one day lmao so I’m hyped for this. she rlly came for him and ur reaction just never stops being hilarious
I think when he calls her "a little paper doll" and twenty two girls in one, none of which know what they're running from, he calls her immature and clueless about who she is and what she wants. And, well, she was 19 and he was in his 30s, so calling her out for not knowing exactly what she wants or not being mature enough is a low blow in my opinion. Yeah, her personality is still developing like anyone else's at 19, what did you expect? 😂 And the lyric about it being too far to fall sounds to me like he's saying that falling in love and having a relationship was too hard for her, like she couldn't handle it. She however in "Dear John" called him out for exploiting the fact that she was so much younger, for manipulating her and for not being responsible, which he should've been because he was so much older and she was basically still a kid. And here he's just saying "oh, you're just not mature enough for love and a serious relationship, so it's on you, not me". It's how I see it, at least.
I interpret it like this "cut the cord and pull some strings, make yourself some Angel wings" basically says that her label will pull some strings to make her look like the innocent one "And if those Angel wings don't fly, someone's gonna paint you another sky" kinda states that if it won't work she'll just find someone else to ruin, I guess Also that entire paper doll image is 1 calling her fragile 2 saying she changes every time she's with someone else, because, y'know u dress paper dolls up to look like you want them to look You can also see that in the "you're like 22 girls in one" line So yea. The songs not to innocent but basically he called her childish and fake. I mean like lol, she was nineteen, what'd he expect? Also so much more grown up to release a song that's calling a child childish. XD
Cut the cord... is a reference to her being young, he's saying she needs to grow up pull some strings... he's saying that she can pull some strings to get her way make yourself some angel wings... he's saying that she's pretending to be an angel, when she's really not And if those angel wings don't fly... he's saying that he expects her act of innocence to fall flat Someone's gonna paint you another sky... is a call back to a line her song (paint me a blue sky then turn it to grey) and that she will move on to the next guy soon and ;that guy can paint her a new blue sky it's kind of harsh, but not on the surface. The lyrics were aimed at Taylor, she would know what they meant... everyone else is just along for the ride.
I have to laugh because I just watched the video of John Mayer performing this live on David Letterman and my first thought was how horrible his voice sounded and that the lyrics were weak. lol Loved your reaction.
Well, in an interview of John Mayer, he laughed at Taylor's Lover lyrics which said, "We could leave the Christmas lights up until January." he laughed at it and saying that who doesn't do that, it's a normal thing to do and nothing special. I can't remember the exact wordings but you get it. Can't believe he was still trying to gain some clout by saying so. Well, Taylor's response was just she was saying that leaving Christmas lights up until January is what makes their relationship normal and mundane. John Mayer everyone 🤦🏻♂️
@@Maruxaan that's sad because he's a genius when it comes to song writing and guitar playing. If you like bluesie/pop you should try and listen to his continuum album. So many great songs from that album, and they're way better live since he's able to do his long ass guitar solos
In Paper Doll, at 5:55 the line "And if those angel wings don't fly, someone's gonna paint you another sky" I think is a reference to Taylor's song where she says "You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain"
"and tie your hair behind your head, strap into some heels that hurt" If you go back and watch Taylor sing Dear John live she has her hair tied back in a high ponytail and is wearing heels. Also it may not be black but she's wearing a purple "chiffon" dress. If you look at photos from when they performed Half of my Heart together at the 2009 Jingle Ball Taylor's dress is "gold and blue" The dress Taylor wore when they performed White Horse and Your Body is a Wonderland at the Staples Center is considered "mint green" This is just a theory "Cut the cord and pull some strings" could be referring to Dear John saying stop using my electric guitar riff acoustic"and make yourself some angel wings and if those angel wings don't fly" could mean go paint "you paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain" - Dear John "someone's gonna paint you another sky" - Paper Doll Red was released in 2012, Paper Doll was released in 2013
The paint you another sky part is a direct response to Taylor’s Dear John because in her song she says “you paint me a blue sky, and go back and turn it to rain” so John Mayer responded “someone will paint you another blue sky”
I love Taylor and I definitely think that Dear John is superior at all levels. Of course the relationship was horrible because of him being older and everything. However, if he had released a stronger response with a proper diss, he would have been awfully criticized. I mean, he was a 32 year old man dating a teenager so he had a lot against him already to keep coming at her hahaha
I don't think this is a good song. I think his intention with this song, like someone said in the comments you read, is to manipulate the audience He is trying to rewrite what happened. By him saying that none of the 22 girls know what they're running from he's minimizing how much he hurt her when he manipulated her. He's trying to appear nonchalant in comparison to her. He's trying to make it seem like she's overreacting: was it too far to fall? he asks. I guess in a way mansplaning her hurt. He seems to almost be saying, why were you so hurt Taylor? This is what happens in relationships. To him his love doesn't cost a thing, but in saying that, he's also trying to make it seem like she's wrong for being hurt. That it's her fault for being hurt. I can never see John Meyer as a good anything after I learned how much of a shitty man he is. His way of treating women just outweighs for me any talent he has.
The t swift bias in this comment section is hilarious. Even more so the fact that people are still arguing about a relationship that ended over ten years ago. I assume they are both well over it by now. If you compare John in 2020 to John in 2010 he's clearly grown an incredible amount and is one of the most humble and genuine people out there while also being one of the greatest musicians of a generation. And I'd hope that Taylor has grown as well
He’s the greatest guitarist of our generation , Taylor can strum three chords. This isn’t a competition but people saying Taylor is better (musically speaking) than John is just hilarious
@@spiderguy01 ah yes its the teenage girl with an undeveloped pre frontal cortex at fault rather than the grown man who knew exactly what he was doing. someone needs to check your hard drive
I dated a guy exactly like John Mayer. Taylor explained herself in Dear John, he was a manipulative narcissist. The best way to get away from someone like this, is to cut ties completely and not allow them to defend themselves.
Wow it took him several years to come up with a response and it’s weak!!!! I thought that because he was so “humiliated” by DJ he would write exactly why he felt that way but NO.
He's basically saying "boo hoo, you're a fragile little doll who has a paper thin personality and you're not mature enough go be in a proper relationship. Then he goes on to say she's (twenty)two faced and is painting herself as the victim in this situation(angel wings). And that she's gonna find another man to play the doll to(someone's gonna paint you another sky)" Very petty coming from a 32 year old man towards an actual teenager tbh.
2:58 I think it was on purpose, that it’s just like a clean easy little poem with guitar as an answer to a kinda harsh attack, I’m sure he didn’t want to go full out on her and attack her back but more just stay like mature I guess? His song features a lot of references to her songs and he’s just trying to be nice, like, “I hope you’ll do good, I guess it didn’t work out after all” Anyway I’m a huge Mayer fan and love his guitar playing, and I have to say that I admire your honesty and not totally cracking john off like a lot of swifties do, just saying what you genuinely think of the song without acting too biased✌️
dear john: "you paint me a blue sky the go back and turn it to rain" paper dolls: "someone's gonna paint you another sky" coney island: "did i paint your bluest skies the darkest gray?"
Actually the “cut the cord” part, was the only part I could make sense of 😂 as already mentioned, I believe he’s referring to her not picking up his calls and the her writing Dear John to “let him know why” ... The part with “if those angel wings don’t fly, someone’s going to paint you a new sky” I believe he’s saying something like “she’ll find someone new to write a song about”.... which makes it even lamer 😂😂😂
this song just sounds so condescending and bitter- Taylors song is so artfully written and impressive that it leaves this song sounding like a petty response from a man who had nothing left to say
I wonder if the "angel wings" verse is him saying she's making herself look like the good guy in this situation and finding another boyfriend to make her feel good about herself... A very poetic way to accuse her of manipulation haha
The only thing that I can think of that is similar is that Taylor sang “you paint me a blue sky then turn back and change it to rain” and John responded “someone’s gonna paint you another sky”
It's such a patronising song. Taylors song was heartfelt and was literally just her telling her experience of the relationship. This is him being butthurt that she simple wrote a song about him so he resorts to calling her name's lol
Ok so these comments are vilifying John and saying she destroyed him and all he came back with was this song. Here's the thing though, he wasn't trying to destroy her; it's a response song. He's not trying to attack her or deny what she said about the way she felt, he's simply sharing his perspective. When you think about it it makes sense because he was so much older and released it three years later. He gave himself time to think about the situation. To me this song is an explanation of why he became distant... not a diss track. And also, in terms of the comments about the age gap and him saying she didn't know who she was and he should have known: sometimes you don't know. Someone like Taylor would come across as extremely mature given her rise to superstardom at 16 and the level of talent she showed at such a young age. He probably saw her as an equal and very mature and thus pursued the relationship only to learn himself that yes someone can be mature in many aspects, but you're only really as mature as your brain development and experience. I don't think this song is attacking her for that, I think it's just addressing it in a very "hey this is what happened" manner.
That's because the song wasn't his reply. He did somewhat respond but not through a song. The people only assumed and believed it was, thus a lie becomes the truth.
I think the "cut the cord line" was trying to suggest she "cut the cord" on the relationship, then "pulled some [guitar] strings" writing 'Dear John'. I also think the "make yourself some angel wings" line was alluding to 'Dear John' being used to paint the narrative of her being innocent. Seems like a subtle form of manipulating the narrative on his part, or maybe I'm just overestimating his writing ability.
Quick update ,John Mayer just said on his radio station that this song wasn’t about Taylor swift so all the swifties crying for years can chill. I swear John is a genius for sitting and watching the world burn for years and then saying “nah guys you got this one wrong it wasn’t about who you thought it was” 😂😆 what a Legend fr
Not gonna lie, the guitar riffs in the beginning hooked me in (like they're supposed to) but by the end it kinda ran its course already, and the lyrics were kinda weak. Definitely lacks the punch in the gut Dear John had.
personally, i think that John wrote this song to not to necessarily call her out in a way Taylor did him, but to do it in a more mature way, if that makes sense. I think that John used a lot of terminology that only her and him would understand. Or he used a lot of personification, being the paper doll was T-Swift, or ya know how little girls play with dolls. so he’s using a doll to say that Taylor was just to young, which she was, we all know.
Is funny how you say John Mayer was too old for her and what he did was wrong and wtv and then you say “this is weak and lame” , I’m sure he could’ve murdered Taylor in a song but if he did he would’ve gotten “you’re unbelievably disrespectful and disgusting” comments so in my opinion John was really wise for making this song.
"If those angel wings dont fly, someone's gonna paint you another sky" From Paper Doll "And if that diamond ring is brass, Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass" From "Hush little Baby" A LULLABY Spot the connection? Essentially admitting that he thought she was a child and... just no
lmao at first idk why i've never been curious enough about the response song to one of my favourite emo diss tracks. after i watched this, i think i probably did check the song out but it was too boring for me i either just listened to it once or never finished it. It's like he was trying to act as if he's mature and the nice one, and was pressured to write a song to her so he could attach her name for marketing purposes (let's face it, we all here only listened to this because of Taylor), he tried so hard to rhyme that the lyrics just don't make sense. The references too, weren't that impactful to leave an impression to the audience. Imagine basically getting called a pedophile by someone 12-13 years younger than you, but you only get back to them by calling them "weak". That's like getting destroyed by a toddler and use age as your only leverage to win an argument lmao.
From his lyrics "someone's gonna paint you another sky" is answering to taylor swidt lyrics " you paint me a blue sky, go back and turn it to rain" so maybe he saying that taylor swift should move on. And some of john mayer's lyrics, for me it says that he's not at fault because taylor swift if just young so she doesn't know what relationship really is... That what I think on his song
33 years old and with failed multiple relationships looks like to me someone is really not out for it or maybe even gay lol just saying.I think in Taylor's part she has always been romantic person that's why she gave all of her to this John but John was completely opposite of what she was dreaming.
I personally love this song and dont really understand why he gets so much pushback for it. Taylor Swift writes a song about her relationships and its genius and a major diss, but John Mayer does it and suddenly its immature or weak? I dont think this was ever intended to be a diss song. Its simply just a song about experience and its done so without making the other person look like trash, which I respect.
Hi response was basically "she doesn't know who she is". Yeah, because she was still a literal teenager lol
Even if that is true,we all know how toxic he is.

@@jaxxon2475 Right, he tried so hard to make her seem like she overreacted that he didn't seem to realize that he basically highlighted that she was so much younger than him, and that if she wasn't "emotionally mature" then it was because she was 19. Bleh, Johny Mayer disgusts me.
She really dropped one of the sickest diss tracks of all time on him and this was his response 😭

Plus she’s been in a committed relationship for like 5 years and has dated an average amount of men. No one is complaining that Ed Sheeran or Harry Styles only write about their experiences with relationships
I think the point is she’s the paper doll, trying on different things and doesn’t know who she is yet (which DUH she’s 19) and she’s also fragile
thank you! idk how i missed that! that’s gonna bother me i didn’t get that haha
Yea I think calling her a paper doll is also a way of him saying she is thinned skinned.
when John says “you’re like 22 girls in one ” he means exactly that , she’s just too complicated and she’s just confused she doesn’t even know who she is , when he says “was it just too far to fall? For a little paper doll?” He’s like saying “all the things that you said I did to you, and that I was mean to you and rude and stuff , was it too much for you to take? Was it just too far to fall for a little paper doll?” I feel like he’s calling her paper doll instead of using something more offensive like “you’re too weak”
@@spiderguy01 bruhh that’s how a metaphor works, just bc it’s worded differently does not mean it’s not it
Calling a young woman a "paper doll" is extremely condescending. It's saying she's a "thin" character with no substance that people play with. If you want to go deeper, paper dolls are extremely fragile and can be ripped apart very easily. On the surface it seems like it doesn't make sense but he's actually being quite cruel.
Agreed
You know didn’t even think of it this way. That is an pretty big insult
You feeling the need to protect women is more sexist than him calling them a paper doll. I was raised by women they are tough they don’t need you to defend them.

Honestly, never mind the fact it was weak, just the fact this came out 3 years later says a lot. Taylor had already moved way past him at this point. Meanwhile he was still stuck on her, and "Dear John" was obviously still eating away at him.

@@travish979 I know it doesn’t take 3 years to write an record an album.
Okay... I’m done rambling now.
gotcha! idk how i missed that. thanks!
The fact that it took him 3 years to come up with this is just...
(He somewhere knows it was his fault after all)
Also yes 22 was out when this came out
I feel like it was more of a reflection on the relationship than an immediate diss track, plus I think he had bigger things to worry about then writing a response judging by that he had to go into surgery for his vocals and everyone in the media hated him.
Taylor Swift at 19: *Writes a beautiful song trying to work through her emotions after an older man wrecked her*
John Mayer, a mid thirties man: "This 19 year old girl acted like a 19 year old girl and hurt my big man feelings, feel bad for me!"
She has a high profile relationship, it doesn't go well, she paints herself as a victim and puts out a bitter song about it to garner sympathy from everyone, and sometimes the other person will speak out and call her BS (like how Kim released the recording of the convo with Kanye proving Taylor lied.)
Everyone she's ever had a relationship with is just a total horrible person, and she's a total awesome and innocent angel?
A person knows what malice and vindictive behavior is by the time they're an adult like she was when she wrote and released that song, and she knew exactly what she was doing, and it wasn't just simply "trying to work through her emotions."
And it's a pretty ridiculous reach to try and excuse it away by saying "she's a songwriter, he should have known she would do that!
I’m crying at the fact that you keep saying the song is lame 🤣🤣🤣

No one holds a candle to Taylor in the realm of lyrics or diss songs
Omg yeaaahhh I laughed so hard too😂😂
I mean it’s a song but it cowers in the shadows of Dear John, in the music, the vocals, the lyrics, the emotion conveyed, it’s just funny honestly,
"none of them know what they're running from" refers to "And I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said "run as fast as you can"
I think when he calls her "a little paper doll" and twenty two girls in one, none of which know what they're running from, he calls her immature and clueless about who she is and what she wants.
Taylor's songs "ours" "Supreman" and "the story of us" (all in speak now) are also about John Mayer
Omg, Ours?!! Wow
It hurts that she wrote Ours about him :(
@@lizbethfelix6903 yes! The lyrics mention the gap between his teeth and his tattoos!
I interpret it like this
"cut the cord and pull some strings, make yourself some Angel wings" basically says that her label will pull some strings to make her look like the innocent one
"And if those Angel wings don't fly, someone's gonna paint you another sky" kinda states that if it won't work she'll just find someone else to ruin, I guess
Also that entire paper doll image is 1 calling her fragile
2 saying she changes every time she's with someone else, because, y'know u dress paper dolls up to look like you want them to look
You can also see that in the "you're like 22 girls in one" line
So yea. The songs not to innocent but basically he called her childish and fake. I mean like lol, she was nineteen, what'd he expect?
Also so much more grown up to release a song that's calling a child childish. XD
i love how he was tryna call her weak but this song was weak....lmao
Ngl this is just embarrassing for him-
Taylor’s song was lyrically amazing, Johns was well 😃
Cut the cord... is a reference to her being young, he's saying she needs to grow up
pull some strings... he's saying that she can pull some strings to get her way
make yourself some angel wings... he's saying that she's pretending to be an angel, when she's really not
And if those angel wings don't fly... he's saying that he expects her act of innocence to fall flat
Someone's gonna paint you another sky... is a call back to a line her song (paint me a blue sky then turn it to grey) and that she will move on to the next guy soon and ;that guy can paint her a new blue sky
it's kind of harsh, but not on the surface.
"Someone's gonna paint you another sky"
Taylor's Dear John song has the line "You paint me a blue sky then go back and turn it to rain"

In Paper Doll, at 5:55 the line "And if those angel wings don't fly, someone's gonna paint you another sky" I think is a reference to Taylor's song where she says "You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain"
"and tie your hair behind your head, strap into some heels that hurt"

"someone's gonna paint you another sky" - Paper Doll
Red was released in 2012, Paper Doll was released in 2013
This song is the definition of that Mean Girls meme.
“So you agree, Taylor Swift was too young for you.”
Your face at “sure was fun being good to you” sent me 💀💀
I don't think this is a good song.
Please react to the last time and back to december by Taylor
The t swift bias in this comment section is hilarious. Even more so the fact that people are still arguing about a relationship that ended over ten years ago. I assume they are both well over it by now. If you compare John in 2020 to John in 2010 he's clearly grown an incredible amount and is one of the most humble and genuine people out there while also being one of the greatest musicians of a generation. And I'd hope that Taylor has grown as well
Of course there is bias. This is a relationship between a 19 hr old and a 32 yr old
He’s the greatest guitarist of our generation , Taylor can strum three chords. This isn’t a competition but people saying Taylor is better (musically speaking) than John is just hilarious
@@donkeykong3628 or a 19 year old wanting to date a 32 year old man 👀 , depends on how you see it 😅
@@spiderguy01 omg youre so right I would choose "why you no love me" over "wouldve couldve shouldve" any day hes so broken victim misunderstood genius
Your face at “sure was fun being good to you” 😆
Wow it took him several years to come up with a response and it’s weak!!!! I thought that because he was so “humiliated” by DJ he would write exactly why he felt that way but NO.
You and I made the same face at the line "sure was fun being good to you" lmaooo
He's basically saying "boo hoo, you're a fragile little doll who has a paper thin personality and you're not mature enough go be in a proper relationship. Then he goes on to say she's (twenty)two faced and is painting herself as the victim in this situation(angel wings). And that she's gonna find another man to play the doll to(someone's gonna paint you another sky)"
Very petty coming from a 32 year old man towards an actual teenager tbh.
No offense to John but this song was boring af. Meanwhile Dear John is so catchy and that bridge tho!
2:58 I think it was on purpose, that it’s just like a clean easy little poem with guitar as an answer to a kinda harsh attack, I’m sure he didn’t want to go full out on her and attack her back but more just stay like mature I guess? His song features a lot of references to her songs and he’s just trying to be nice, like, “I hope you’ll do good, I guess it didn’t work out after all”
Anyway I’m a huge Mayer fan and love his guitar playing, and I have to say that I admire your honesty and not totally cracking john off like a lot of swifties do, just saying what you genuinely think of the song without acting too biased✌️
dear john: "you paint me a blue sky the go back and turn it to rain"
paper dolls: "someone's gonna paint you another sky"
coney island: "did i paint your bluest skies the darkest gray?"
Love your reactions
Actually the “cut the cord” part, was the only part I could make sense of 😂 as already mentioned, I believe he’s referring to her not picking up his calls and the her writing Dear John to “let him know why” ... The part with “if those angel wings don’t fly, someone’s going to paint you a new sky” I believe he’s saying something like “she’ll find someone new to write a song about”.... which makes it even lamer 😂😂😂
this song just sounds so condescending and bitter- Taylors song is so artfully written and impressive that it leaves this song sounding like a petty response from a man who had nothing left to say
Paper Doll is a masterpiece.
Okay wow never realized this before but just looked it up and 22 came out before this song!
I wonder if the "angel wings" verse is him saying she's making herself look like the good guy in this situation and finding another boyfriend to make her feel good about herself... A very poetic way to accuse her of manipulation haha
"OK JANICE" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The only thing that I can think of that is similar is that Taylor sang “you paint me a blue sky then turn back and change it to rain” and John responded “someone’s gonna paint you another sky”
This is a great song!
It's such a patronising song. Taylors song was heartfelt and was literally just her telling her experience of the relationship. This is him being butthurt that she simple wrote a song about him so he resorts to calling her name's lol
2:24 22 was already out! paper dolls was released in 2013 and 22 was released in 2012
Ok so these comments are vilifying John and saying she destroyed him and all he came back with was this song.
She said in Dear John ‘you paint me a blue sky
u should react to enchanted by taylor swift and the enchanted cover by owl city (the response of the dude who she wrote enchanted about)
Enchanted was about owl city?!!
@@meiji4785 yea haha he did a cover in response
I was dissatisfied because it didn't feel like a reply.
That's because the song wasn't his reply. He did somewhat respond but not through a song. The people only assumed and believed it was, thus a lie becomes the truth.
1:28 your facial expression was hilarious... priceless" haha
If this was all I had for my response I’d just sit the hell down.
it's okay she's re-recording dear john (taylor's version)
he said someone’s gonna paint you another sky and in her song she says you paint me a blue sky then go back and turn it to gray lol
This song was released about a year after the song 22
Quick update ,John Mayer just said on his radio station that this song wasn’t about Taylor swift so all the swifties crying for years can chill. I swear John is a genius for sitting and watching the world burn for years and then saying “nah guys you got this one wrong it wasn’t about who you thought it was” 😂😆 what a Legend fr
Not gonna lie, the guitar riffs in the beginning hooked me in (like they're supposed to) but by the end it kinda ran its course already, and the lyrics were kinda weak. Definitely lacks the punch in the gut Dear John had.
✨Gaslighting✨ proving Taylor was just right 😂
22 came out March 2012 and this song came out July 2013
Some ones gonna paint u another sky is referencing the line in dear John you paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain.
personally, i think that John wrote this song to not to necessarily call her out in a way Taylor did him, but to do it in a more mature way, if that makes sense.
Totally agreed, finally someone understand me.

Every John Mayer song is completely indistinguishable from eachother and if I hear it I just assume I’m in a bad coffee shop
The “Okay JANETT😒” in 7:04 Lol
at the end of the day Dear John stands superior.... masterpiece
“okay JANICE”
33 years old and with failed multiple relationships looks like to me someone is really not out for it or maybe even gay lol just saying.I think in Taylor's part she has always been romantic person that's why she gave all of her to this John but John was completely opposite of what she was dreaming.
this is the same man who called dear john ‘cheap writing’
22 was released 10 months before this
I personally love this song and dont really understand why he gets so much pushback for it. Taylor Swift writes a song about her relationships and its genius and a major diss, but John Mayer does it and suddenly its immature or weak? I dont think this was ever intended to be a diss song. Its simply just a song about experience and its done so without making the other person look like trash, which I respect.
its him gas lighting the teenager he groomed but okay
