MANA is actually the shortened version of Manananggal, a Filipino mythical monster with batlike wings that separates from the waist. The upper body flies to hunt at night while the lower half is safely hidden on the ground. Pablo used it as a metaphor for achieving great heights in their career while keeping their feet firmly on the ground, also vocally represented by Ken's deep, grounding voice and Stell's heavenly high notes. It's a shame that the CC's not working, but that's pretty much the essence of the song. Mana is also a wordplay for legacy, signifying their achievement of greatness while remaining humble, the kind of values they, as PPop pioneers, want to leave behind for the next generation of PPop artists.

Hey, fellas. Some context for you: In the song, *_MANA_* is short for *_MANANANGGAL_*, which is a kind of supernatural being from Filipino folklore. It looks like an ordinary human by day, but at night turns into its monstrous form: it splits its body at the waist while the upper half gains wings and flies off in search of prey. (Maybe No Drink and reMARKable know the word "tanggal", which means "detach"; "manananggal" literally translates to "someone that detaches".) The song also mentions -- in that chanted part led by Ken that y'all liked -- ASWANG, which is another kind of horrific supernatural creature. Ken chants _"ASWANG ba, kaya kinakatakutan?"_ which translates to "Are we ASWANG, is that why you fear us?"
What's unusual -- and brilliant -- is that Pablo embraces this imagery of the manananggal and aswang as "monsters" and applies it to SB19. His lyrics go _"I'd rather half my body go missing."_ He then turns being like a manananggal into a positive: someone who uses their super-human abilities to fly and soar to heights of success while keeping their feet on the ground. The chorus goes _"MANANANGGAL... Langit, lupa, magsasama.... 'di man kita tunay na halaga ng aking biyaya."_ ("MANANANGGAL... Sky and earth unified... even if you don't see the true worth of my gifts.")
The bits that No Drink and reMARKable could make out -- those could be this part of the pre-chorus sung by Stell/Justin: _"Sa akin ay hindi problema, kung 'di niyo pa rin nakikita, tinataglay ko ang biyayang hinding-hindi niyo maikakaila."_ ("It's not my problem if you still don't see, I possess gifts/blessings you can't ever deny.")
Before MANA, I'd never encountered a positive take on the manananggal. But, come to think of it, nowadays saying someone is a "beast" or is "terrific" (which originally meant something terrifying/terror-inducing) is saying they have an impressive, "unnatural" level of skill. And SB19 are 100% BEASTS at all they do. So in MANA, they fully own and celebrate being beasts. That's why the music has a sinister sound, with a sort of evil clown/carnival vibe and that evil-sounding laughter. If you check out a full performance of MANA, the monster imagery is also reflected in the choreography and the visuals. That's why in the AAA performance, the backdrop is the moon over dark woods, the dancers make grotesque faces, and everyone does the wing-flapping part of the choreo at the end.
One last clever thing (probably intended by Pablo) that I've noticed is that the title is itself the word MANA / NANGGAL split into two. As I said before TANGGAL means "detach", and if you do detach that part, you're left with MANA, which is harder to find a one-word translation for. MANA means "something passed on", usually something passed on TO YOU by your parents/predecessors. It can be used for material wealth, or hereditary traits, or skills/practices/traditions taught to you (which touches on MAPA's theme). Lastly, it can also mean "something passed on BY YOU" or what you leave behind for those that come after you. In this sense, maybe "legacy" would be a good translation.

If someone asks me why I'm a fan of SB19, I'd definitely show them this song, Mana. I totally agree that this would be a good introduction to these five talented gentlemen, not only with their vocals but also for its metaphorical connotation (Be a manananggal = eyes in the sky, feet on the ground). Each of the members contributed to the dynamic build up of this song. It's actually a fan favorite and up until now we're still waiting for an MV to this, because, Mana supremacy yo!
When Pablo is writing the lyrics, he is fond of using double meaning...

In their interviews, Pablo said he makes sure that he highlights the strength of each member, meaning, while composing, he already has each member in mind for each part.

SB19 is a very special group. They are versatile. They are multi-talented. They are best in putting emotions in their songs and performances - they get you hyped, they make you cry. I agree that they are a rare group not just on this generation but also across all generations.

Pablo's use of a monstrous mythical creature that is feared by Filipinos because this creature is so sinister with no redeeming quality. That he used this creature as a metaphor and somehow turned it positive is just incredible.
Pablo composed this song and had made specific parts of it tailor fit for each member to shine. In interviews the other members expressed their admiration for him because as they said his art is elevated such that he is able to come up with melodies and lyrics that not only express feelings that most can relate to but also envisions how it will showcase the strengths of the member he has earmarked that particular part of the song for.
The lower part is left at a remote area where few people go so that it would not be discovered. It returns to reattach itself to the lower parts of its body before the sun rises, otherwise the manananggal dies by auto combustion.
MANA is short for Manananggal , it's a mythical creature in the Philippines..The old folks said it's a woman transform into a creature at night that cut it's body in half, the upper extremities from the waist down. In the lyrics it is said that eyes to the heaven and feet to the ground which means they will be grateful to God and will remain humble that whatever they have achieved in life as an artist they want to stay humble and down to earth.

The song “Mana” portrays a sense of mystery and introspection. There is a longing for recognition and the question of being missed. However, the statement “Nah, I’d rather half my body go missing” suggests that the persona is willing to sacrifice their own identity for the sake of growth and change.
What's funny is that during interviews, they always make Stell do an impromptu rap when they're being asked to do so (ex Karen Davila interview). And I think Stell also did the rap in the Hallelujah song cover during an online concert
one thing that I like more about sb19 is having music with different genre in terms of music..and all their voices are all killing it .

It seems u guys admired so much d deep voice of Ken Felip based on ur comments. That's his greatest talent apart from his dancing skills and his visuals. For more deep voice experience w ken felip, u may check his EP Complex (We Are At Play concert of Felip). U will surely be amazed at how good his deep voice had become from ds MANA era to his Rocksta era now. Felip explored and trained his deep voice well that transformed him now into becoming not just a versatile singer but a great performer as well as a SOLO artist who can do different genres from pop songs, love songs, ballads, RNB, hip hop, Rock. Felip earned d title of being a real ROCKSTA.
Songs of SB19 are songs that made you think, at first you really can't comprehend because it has a lot of meaning. You need to dig out 'coz Pablo uses words with double meaning. He is so amazing, a genius lyricist indeed!

SB19 members are so versatile artist...They have different kind of styles. They show us what kind of music they want individually..They are no restrictions anymore unlike before when they werenunderna Korean Music Comp..They were restricted to do their own thing..
I could never pick a vocal killer in this group, they all shine equally. It's crazy. When you think it can't get any better, they improve 1000% . They are a complete group. Performance, vibe, vocals and fandom. (lyrics, production etc etc)
That is why SB19 is different from other group, they don't just stick to one genre and they can all sing, rap, dance, compose and produce their songs.
Their voices somehow complement one another…it all comes out real great! And I like that each member is always given their own part and not just one or two of the group members like most boy groups.

Stell can rap pretty good even in freestyle rap his the man. Try to look for the Back the zone concert Justin and Stell rap in the Song Hallelujah. And carpool karaoke also it's was fun.
The world is sleeping on this super talented group. Even in PH they still have bashers and it's just sad that they don't see how gifted this group is. The more you listen to their songs, especially their live performances the more you realize that no other group can do what they do. They're not just a typical boyband, they are f*ckin great artists!

Mana is short for manananggal a mythical creature in Filipino folklore. It is usually a female whose upper part of the body waist up detaches from the lower part during the full moon. It then grows bat like wings and take to flight to look for its prey to devour - usually children.
That’s why SB19 works well as a group and as individuals! As the saying goes, 2 heads are better than 1 but for them 5 heads are better than 1. And the saying that too many cooks in the kitchen ruins the dish - for them, altogether they create music as a Michelin Star worthy dish! 😊 Can’t wait for their next release and I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be better than this EP release 👍

MANA is my most favorite of all their songs🥰 the sounds is a bit weird but that's what i liked the most about it.
"MANAnanggal" is one of those mythical monster/creatures in the Philippines. it looks like a normal person by day but would split it's body in half at night . The upper body will grows wings then fly around and look for their prey which are usually pregnant women or newborn babies. The lower body or it's torso will be left on the ground.
SB19 used this as a metaphor that even though they can soar high and reached their dreams they will keep their feet on the ground. the latter part of the song they were talking about "don't fall asleep" mean to say don't sleep on their gifts or talent that is usually inherited .. inheritance or legacy is MANA' in our language😊

The 2nd one is that haters are so scared and threatened by them, so they’re like “why are you so threatened? Am I monster or something? Fine, if you think I’m a monster, then I’ll be one. A monster at performing hahah. And for hater listeners, don’t sleep on us or ignore us or else you’ll eventually realize our talent and it’ll hit you hard and we’ll devour you. And for hater competitors, don’t be sleep or be lazy or else we’ll surpass you and devour you”

Watching them perform this live in a concert, I got goosebumps all over! Pablo stood out for me - he was freakin' scary af (MANA is that creepy, eerie song since the reference is that folkloric mythical creature that could give you nightmares if you see what it's like!)!!! When he sings Mana, it's as if he's ready to devour you like a monster - his voice has that hoarse, raspy quality to it but has so much power coming from his gut. It's scary af but you can't get enough of it!
