I am in my last year of majoring in design. I will say that the vast majority of classmates in this major are rich kids that are looking for an “easy major.” They’re always complaining when things get hard. For that reason, I would say I don’t know if you’d always be surrounded by true creatives. The big plus of college I think, is getting to meet all these different people with an education. Networking is huge and I think college makes that easier than if you don’t go to school!
Seso, I’ve been watching your content for around 5 years now. I used to learn from you and basically got 90% of my skillset from your videos. In August I started my first semester in Graphic Design and it’s been tough but your video really helped me want to keep pushing forward. Also thanks for making the everything pack… I use it… for basically everything hahaha
Did my undergrad in Computer Science and grad degree in Branding + Integrated Communications (basically marketing and advertising) and your analysis is SPOT ON. My formal education gave me critique and strategy skills that you don't get from just grinding. BUT, school projects (at the undergrad level) don't always reflect what "real clients" end up asking for. On the other hand, I've tried to work with people who make really cool things, but trying to talk strategy and conceptual thinking felt like talking to a wall. MY ADVICE go to college (if it's affordable; community college IS A VALID OPTION) and then do client work in between Fall and Spring semesters.
Nice, simple and vers well expressed 🔥 Like seso said tuition in thoose school is the biggest factor sometimes in Europe you have a lot of school that des alternate internship that helps you pay school, have a little salary and have a first profesional job expérience as you are in school that can be a way for you 😁 Help you have a network in school and with pros, have a first experience, be paid White learning the things that you can have some difficulties doing it self taught 😁 But beware choose carefully your school and dont put all your faith in the school program, put your faith in yourself ans in you vision that you will need to hone after school with personal project and with beign self taught after school and job hours 🔥
I currently have a undergrad background in Information Technology but I have been working to transition into a Graphic Design role for the foreseeable future. Graphic Design for me has been self taught, so my success in the design has mostly been me making things look "cool". I've notice were my designs lacked though was with me not telling the story of how I got to the point were I'm at now. I'm glad you mentioned it here because this is something I have been working towards to improve upon as a designer because I realize the importance of it more and more.
My personal opinion is no. There's so many tooks and resources (you for example) that teach people better, more thoroughly and you guys give out free education to get people better. The job of a school is to put you in debt for a career that won't even cover that debt.
