Can't believe you haven't watched Pink Floyd live on video ? Their live concerts in the 1980's blew everyone away.....musically and visually. The Pulse CD from the 1994 Division Bell tour is still a good seller, but most people are buying the latest remixed DVD......i just paid $120 for mine.....money well spent. Pulse is regarded as probably the greatest musical avent of all time. Yet the full Meddle album live in Pompeii, 1971 , is just as good. Re Dark Side of the Moon.......side one is about life from inside the womb ( speak to me - as we all do to a pregnant womans belly ), then a scream to signify child birth and Breathe ( now you are breathing on your own ) and ends in death ( The Great Gig ). Vanetta Fields did a lot of the backing vocals. And, Dark Side is one of the biggest selling albums ever and holds the record for staying in the charts for about 10 years or maybe more.. ...and is still selling well . Must see..... Comfortably Numb followed by Run Like Hell , both live to finnish the Pulse video , and then from 1971, Echoes live in Pompeii.....this is NOT the more resent solo version by David Gilmore, which is also excellant, but not as good.

Pink Floyd were masters of mixing, stereo placement, reverbs, & delays which was largely the work of Alan Parsons, their engineer, whom you may know as a great musical as well. I know this is mind-blowing for you. Imagine what it was like to hear it in 1973! Thanks for this one.

It's on record that Pink Floyd based their name on Black American artists Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. beautiful cycle of Americans and Brits influencing one another. As others have said, you should absolutely hit 'Let's Start Here' by Lil Yachty. It released last year with clear Pink Floyd influences, which came as a surprise as it was a complete change in Yachty's sound. Great album experience.

Post war Britain produced the greatest music - the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, Supertramp, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, and a myriad number of others. In the pulse concert, great gig in the sky uses all three of the backup singers doing a section each. It sounds like that in the original recording as well, but I'm not positive.
1994 pulse concert it’s two hours and a half but in the second half of the show, they did the entire dark side of the moon. If you could find it, you play it and you’ll watch them in action you’ll be amazed.

Absolutely fantastic album! I heard it for the first time when I was about 10 years old and it blew me away the first time! It is still one of my favourites and I play it very often. By the way, it's by far the most successful album - it stayed on the Billboard 200 for 917(!) weeks - from 1973 until 1988. About The Great Gig In The Sky: the song was sung by studio singer Clare Torry. At the time she was studying and singing at Abbey Road studio (where the album was recorded) for a living. There are a few interesting facts: it was found and recommended by Alan Parsons - then attached to the band as the main sound engineer (he had a big hand in the quality of the recording, and the band used several of his technical and personnel ideas). Clare Torry came into the studio and was confused to find that she was supposed to sing and that there were no lyrics. She tried something, but it wasn't right. David Gilmour advised her to try using her voice as another musical instrument. She sang it twice, and when Pink Floyd wanted to continue, she said that was enough and left. She was paid £30 (normally it would have been £20, but it was a Sunday so she was entitled to extra pay). She didn't even hope the band would include the song on the album. After a few months she saw the album in the window, so she went to see it and was surprised that one of the two versions the band had included on the album. She later sued, but Pink Floyd settled out of court, paid her back royalties, and to this day she still receives royalties for co-writing.
Do yourselves a huge favour and watch any of the songs from the Pulse concert from 1994 - I'm biased of course, as I was lucky to be there but the production values of both Sound, arrangement and light show, in my view, have never been beaten to date. A true treat for music lovers and not just followers of Pink Floyd.
The great Gig was sung by Clare H. Torry ...she was working in the same studio, and they asked her sing, and she belted it out in like 2 takes if memory serves as she made it up as the music played.

The assumption that music taste was less sophisticated 50 odd years ago can seem patronising. As a 70 year old who bought this album on vinyl in 1973 I'm sad that music seems to have stagnated during the last couple of decades. There are great talents out there, they just have to be independent of the big labels to be alliwed to give reign to their creativity. Ren springs to mind, plus the people who have collaborated with him.
I have an unpopular opinion re:Great Gig in the Sky. First, in no way do I diminish the studio performance by Clare Torry...however, years later she sued the band for co-writing credit. (Eventually they settled out of court). After that, she performed it live at one Floyd concert (video on youtube) and she was horrible. The band performed it live many times with various singers & ALL were outstanding, using the original as the template (Pulse concert, for example). The only bad version was the live Clare Torry one...just sayin'.
You are correct about Clare's live version, but she was much older and her voice was GONE. The original was the yardstick in one and a bit takes.....and still can't be beaten by 3 brilliant voices taking turns......because it is just too difficult for one singer to complete.
It's just a remarkable album. What's more remarkable is that Roger Waters was a man in his 20s when he wrote those lyrics. Astonishing that a young man could be so sceptical about life and politics and greed, and here were 50 years on and he was proven right.

Grat reaction, you mention the australian pink floyd tribute band, they are great but many years ago some of them split and formed an even better tribute band called "brit floyd", being english you may have more chance of seeing them live, they are incredible, i sometimes listen to them more than floyd, much better than aussie floyd, great light show too. Also floyds drummer nick mason has his own band now called "nick masons saucerful of secrets" they play floyd music from floyd but only from before dark side, they are brilliant, in the band is also guy pratt, who played bass with floyd after roger waters left, and gary kemp from spandau ballet, well worth seeing live.
guys you have to do 'Lets start here' by LiL Yachty. it has a lot of derived elements from dark side of the moon with a modern twist. i think you'll be blown away with the production and its more of a psychedelic prog rock album albeit by a rapper but nevertheless a fantastic album to check out if you loved dark side of the moon. Plus you'd get great views, its highly regarded and pretty popular on youtube as well. Cheers!
