  • In this video I test out the EcoCut Pro windshield wiper blade cutter that has been bombarding my Instagram feed lately. It was spamming me so much I had to buy this thing and see if it really works. The instagram video ad makes it look effortless and says you can renew your windshield wiper blades 2 times by using this device that shaves off a small amount of your wipers to make them new again. Will it work or is it a scam? Let's find out in this video!

    Hey Matt, loved your video and could have told you the results you would get before you wasted your cash. I'm a retired Marine Engineer and for probably 20 years I haven't bought more than 2 sets of blades (often sold car before needing to), but over 14 years ago I decided to manufacture and market a Wiperblade Restorer using the method I had always used on my own blades, totally SUCCESSFULLY. The thing is, I KNOW and understand why a wiper-blade works or fails. The average consumer doesn't know that a wiperblade edge MUST be a specific shape because it actually works by dragging a square edge up and down across the glass and flips to the other side as blade direction changes. Over time road grit rounds off the square edges and can also dull your windscreen too. Firstly, both the blades and the screen must be washed clean weekly. Secondly, take a look at your blades to ensure they haven't shredded and NEVER try to cut them back to form a new edge, because this is NOT POSSIBLE. They NEED their width so they can flex each way so as to DRAG up and down. The razor cutter unit you tested above cut into the blade edge and the rubber stretched and pulled back against the blade. It was this pull back that created all the wavy cut lines and also left a small rubber spike on the end. Anyway, you found every problem you could find. Now sadly for me, while I have the answer to your tests & the cure to the tool failures, I also have a blade restoring tool of my own which you can view on www.wiper-wizard.com . You can also have a couple for FREE if you want to publicly test it out. I have sold hundreds and in 14 years have NEVER had even one complaint. What I have had is 6 'pretend tools' use close names to mine and a few sites that actually show MY video, use MY text and MY arms and hands to demonstrate their crappy tool. One Canadian couple had their blades shredded by a yellow box blade destroyer and in error wrote to me about it BECAUSE I publish my email address in case there is an issue. They wrote to advise they had reported MY unit (which they didn't have) to a Canadian reviewing morning show who proceeded to publicly test & condemn the Chinese yellow box rubbish BUT PUBLISHED MY URL, thinking the garbage tool was mine. The Chines garbage is called 'www.asseenontvonsale.com' where they then call the tool a 'wiper wizard' whereas MY SITE & TOOL is www.wiper-wizard.com . My sales obviously dropped off at that point and now so many versions of a wiperblade restorer are on the market, I've currently stopped marketing. The crap that is online is killing the restorer market and increasing new wiper blade prices. I really hope you get in touch with me Matt. you will most certainly help your subscribers and me. Take care, Brian B

    See it IS videos like this, not Just your awesome Wheeling or building videos why I'm never gonna skip ads on your channel. The underlying problem here with windshield wipers is that most damage to the rubber is due to UV and environmental degradation ... It's not about cutting back torn edge to get to clean rubber, there simply isn't any. If you took a brand new set of windshield wiper blades and mechanically damaged the edge, I am quite confident that this tool would successfully remove minor damage and return you with a clean wiper profile. Just another case where real life and the internet do not cross paths :-) thanks for the informative test and as always for being a legit dude!

      Exactly. Here in California, we don't see much rain but plenty of sun and that UV tears rubber apart; I use my wipers maybe 10 days a year total but after a year or 2, they work like trash. Either replace the blades or invest in silicone ones, they are less susceptible to UV damage.

I tell them " I ONCE READ AN ARTICLE IN CONSUMER REPORTS MAGAZINE AND IT ALL BOILED DOWN TO ONE THING. RUBBER DETERIORATES. CHANGE YOUR BLADES EVERY SIX MONTHS." Then I let them pick their blades....

    Good review and from my experience, few vehicle owners really maintain their wiper refills regularly. This video then must relate to those who do. Over the years I found that cleaning the existing blades with rubbing alcohol works good in getting them to last a bit longer. After cleaning them, I follow up with a non greasy silicone spray (CRC brand) to help them through the hot summer period. This became an topic in my garage as it became more and more difficult to find new refills at filling stations as I rummaged through all of the snacks and drinks most of them have. Even a traditional filling station, ones without the mini-mart inside, didn't have a selection of refills. Of all places, Walmart had a great display however, they aren't refills, they offer the blade assembly for about $11 each. got the same results with Auto Zone places too. Ended up having to settle for wiper blade assemblies vs. just the refill to make the task worthy due to the time involved. I'm OCD with clean working wipers and windshield washers.
    I think this device has a good foundation but in using it, that is where the flaw sets in. Likely this tool would work best if they provided a "Jig" of some type to hold the blade flat and sturdy so you could simply run that blade as if it were a wood planer. I did notice holding the blade had some effect in the tool performing consistently. Also, the tool requires an intact blade vs. one that has already begun to shred itself from age/wear. The tool likely would work fine without any further changes to it if there was a better way to hold the blade.

    Its very important that you clean the wiper extremely well as the instructions tells you. This removes the dry scale from the wiper to make the cutter glide as it's supposed to. You still need to trim the end slightly.

    I always just add on a couple of wiper blades every time I order parts from RockAuto. They're generally under $4/ea and don't add anything to shipping if you get some from the same warehouse. Sometimes you can even catch some on closeout for under $2/ea for decent ones.

    I have found that rubbing steel wool up and down the blades and then cleaning with a household cleaner does a pretty good job of getting rid of streaks. Not as good as brand new but way better than before. I live in south Louisiana and the ozone and heat really does a number on the blades. I usually change a couple of times a year. I wish you could still just buy the inserts instead of the whole blade, that was a lot more economical.

      I am going on two years with my 24 inch wipers. I got 2 at 32 dollars each. I clean them once a year(more if need be) with denatured alcohol and rags, it gets the crap off. Silicone still performing and looks fine. No noise, no streaks. YOU have to clean the blades once in a while otherwise the dirt will make you think your wipers are bad. I've transferred this set over three cars now.

    I've found that sanding the wiper blade lightly with fine sandpaper will restore the edge for a time. But eventually the rubber just fails. Planned obsolescence I imagine. Thanks for the vid I wondered about that product. I was conderned that shortening the blade would make it stiffer, and more likely to chatter than fold back and forth quietly.

    I've had the same wipers for 2 years now. What I do when they start to streak is scrape the sides of the rubber with my thumbnail. It's not the ends that do the wiping. Notice when your blades go across the window they lay to one side a bit.

  • @thatairplaneguy
    @thatairplaneguy 4 роки тому +1

    I’ve found wipers don’t wear out because of tiny cracks in the leading edge of the blade it’s because they spend lost of their life in the “parked” position which bends the blades over and they stay bent when they’re old and don’t flop back and forth as they’re dragged from one side to the other.
    Renewing the edge won’t fix that. It’s still wiping with the side of the blade instead of the edge.
    This gadget can work for damaged blade tips but typically if it’s old enough to have dry rotted or damaged tips it’s old enough to be permanently folded to one side and needs replaced. And for the cost of the gadget you could buy one new wiper anyway lol

    • @briansmail7297
      @briansmail7297 3 роки тому

      You can of course remove the rubber blade and turn it round to help it return to straight. The top of any blade MUST be SQUARE and flat. A blade works by being dragged up the screen, flipping onto the other side and then being dragged down the screen. If staying bent against screen place old tennis balls under the arm when not in use.

    It would probably work on silicone blades which last longer. Rubber blades deteriorate faster from chemical absorption and natural weathering. No cutter is going to save those once they're worn. On a side note, it looks like your windshield needing cleaning from the get go because the blades had already been smearing years of chemicals onto it. I have the same on one of my cars and new blades will only stop it from smearing more, not undo what's already on the windshield.

    I have spent over 40 years in the wiper blade industry... many times the problem is the windshield. before screwing with the wiper, clean the windshield with #0000 steel wool and windshield washer fluid and rub in a swirling motion. Then take the washer fluid, put it on a clean cloth and clean the blades. Never use petroleum based cleaners on rubber, only water or alcohol based. if the wipers still aren't working, spend $10 to $20 for a new wiper every 3 years or so...

    Could you us setting 2 to cut it. Do you think number 1 was not cutting it enough then the combo od 1 and 2 it cuts too much off? What happens if you use setting 2 right of the bat. Probably will fail again though.

      Setting 2 cuts at the same depth no matter if using it first or second.

      One must NEVER cut width off any wiper blade. Wiperblades function by using their width to help the blade flip over in each direction so blade is dragged Up the screen and then flips so it can be dragged Down again. It cleans screen without sqeaking or judder by square junction between top & sides.

    • @ridingwiththereids
      @ridingwiththereids 5 років тому

      @@bleepinjeep Yup. It's to melt the snow and ice off of the blade. They run a heating element inside of the blade to do so I believe. I'll try and find a link and post it.

    to be fair this thing won't help with bent wiper blades or bent arms. but also wiper blades probably don't chip until they get hard.

    • @briansmail7297

      Road grit and dust do a huge amount of damage to blades and also dull the windscreen itself. The top of blades MUST be square to the sides so blade is dragged up the screen, flips over to other side and is then dragged down again. This is what prevents judder and squeaks. The blade must flip from side to side when in use.

    Those single beam wipers don’t do good on a windshield with a ark or a curve you have you use the one with more pressure points of the actual windshield

    In 2019 one would expect the Auto industry to come up with a better solution than rubber wiper blades. They suck, even when brand new at times. This EcoCut Pro gadget only serves to make matters worse. Well, back to the old drawing board & see if we can come up with a better way to wipe the windshield.

    Hey Matt,
    Where are you pal. When are you going to email me (via my website) so I can post you a couple of my wiper-blade restorer units to publicly test. 14 years these have been on the market and l've NOT had a complaint yet. Although 'cos I publish my email address, I have received a variety of complaints from buyers of certain useless versions (but not mine). My wiper-wizard also stops squeaks, judder and streaks by RE-SQUARING THE EDGES. I really AM a retired engineer. Keep smiling, Brian.

      What kind of wipers are you using? I'm assuming you're saying the reason is due to cold weather...but I've lived in Minnesota and Alaska and I've never had that happen. The only other reason I can think of that would cause that would be wiper blade quality.
