Back in the day, you needed groups because the members actually played their own instruments and did all of their own vocals. There was no big technologies to make thing sound differently that what was being recorded. I could listen to Queen all day so if you put up one of their songs, I will listen, comment and give you a thumbs up. Queen is great in the studio but even better live, just a little FYI. I’d like to point out that at this time BIG music was the gate keeper and they had one gate when it came to everything besides country music and that was disco. If you didn’t record disco you got zero air play and pretty much zero dollars. All there was was concerts and album sales. Now a days you have music you want to hear in your ear ANY TIME. Back in my time we had the radio and they played what record companies paid them to play. It sucked. My point being, since no one was going to play their music on the radio, why not get creative. Give the fans a reason to look forward to the next album. It’s great to live in todays world with great artists at your finger tips 24/7.
That wasn’t true when Bohemian Rhapsody was released - and it ended up being the 18th biggest hit in the US for 1976 despite its length. The top two songs in the US for 1976 were from Paul McCartney & Wings and Elton John. Other (non-disco) songs in the top 25 for the year were hits by Paul Simon, the Eagles, Nazareth and Hall & Oates.
