    The designers of the machines are to be proud. Many years of study and Exstream functional thinking. Also, interesting, is the amount of "manual" hands on is integrated into the automatic processing. Show's that we haven't got rid of all the humans yet. Love this channel.

    Simplified explanation - The black stuff is a developer solution similar to developing an old photo. The non image area (light grey) is hydroscopic (loves water) and the image area (darker grey) is hydrophobic (really hates water). On the printing press the plate is loaded onto a rotating cylinder with different rollers touching it. First roller is water/alcohol mix to wet the non image area so ink doesn't stick. Next rollers are Ink and that only sticks to the image area that is not wet. Then image transferred to rubber blanket cylinder, then to paper. Better ink transfer with rubber blanket with much sharper lines. This is why it is called offset printing. Usually at least 4 separate units in a line with cyan, magenta, yellow and black just like your printer at home but each colour gets its own plate. This was a single colour run. Paper jams in this machine are MUCH worse than home printer!!!! The old machine doing the gold letters was a Heidelberg Letterpress. It can go much faster but maybe slowed down for you to see. We run ours at approximately 4500 sheets per hour. Hope this was helpful.

      LOL, I was in the business for 30 years, I'm the Polar King, and you did NOT offer the simplified explanation, but still an excellent one! ("Blankets" are always going to confuse the layman, for instance.) After all those years and seeing the development of the equipment, I am STILL shocked at the volume we were are able to produce. Printing is a fascinating business, from growing seedlings to sitting in a client's office. I'm sure Ben Wilson will tell you that a pulp and paper mill are absolutely fascinating. Some of the great "field trips" of my life.

    I really would appreciate if the operator of that big paper cutter needed TWO hands to activate the knife. As it looks now he activates it by foot or a single hand. And the other hand is still free.

    • @kevindunlap5525
      @kevindunlap5525 Рік тому

      I have a LOT of cutter operator experience. You don't want to hear some of the stories. Conventional equipment makes it virtually impossible to have an accident. There are lasers that signal an immediate stop of the rotation of the arm moving the knife. And yes, you push two buttons and if you release one to quickly to reach for the paper, everything will stop.

    Nice tour of how things are made in a paper factory. A shame the larger of the shaved scraps of paper around the 10:30 time marker couldn't be recovered and used to make notepads. That would cut down (no pun intended) on how much waste is created.

    • @kevindunlap5525
      @kevindunlap5525 Рік тому +1

      I was a highly skilled cutter operator for many years, just one of the functions I served in the industry, my favorite by far. Cutting and handling tons of paper in a single shift is almost ASMR satisfying in some cases. A fresh knife would actually sing through paper.
      We would ALWAYS save materials that were of size and often would spend evenings doing the pad work. The pieces that he was cutting off from the full width sheet that were about 3" wide were always saved, we had pallets and pallets of them. They are specifically used to band up stacks of folded material before skidding or boxing.
      Excellent observation and point. There were ALWAYS note pads somewhere!!!

They would bring tours in and especially the kids got a kick out of asking me to hold my hands. I'd always hide a couple of fingers and then show them. THEY thought it was hilarious, EYE still have my finger tips!! (You'd have to practice the finger move to avoid disrespecting anyone by accident.)

    But a lot of paper goes to this kind of production. The waste that will be processed goes to be processed. And for people to sort paper waste as it should, the globe would not be so polluted. This line is practically automated. Not only do you make thesewhich cups but other things as well. And how much paper goes to print books. So that people all over the world respect books as they should. And that they throw the damaged or worn out on waste paper for reprocessing. Various packaging is also printed.
