How to make an Ancient Egyptian scarab beetle in clay - part 1 sculpting

Detailed, step by step tutorial on how to sculpt an Ancient Egyptian scarab beetle out of clay. Inspired by the chest scarab placed on Tutenkhamun's mummy, this scarab is a great project to up your skills in either air dry clay or real clay for the kiln.
What are heart Scarabs?
Ancient Egyptians believed that scarab beetle totems placed on the mummy's chest would help keep the heart quiet so it doesn't speak out any sins the person did in their life. They believed the heart held memory so when a soul faced all the gods and told all their good deeds, it was important to place the magical heart scarab so that the heart keeps quiet. Also the use of lapis lazuli for the scarab beetle was important as it helped the heart feel love so it was less likely to speak out against the soul seeking immortality in the afterlife.
