Might be because, we've been living in our siloed world and often fail to reach out to other persons of other race ? I know that was prevalent when I was going to undergrad in states. An observation, where some nationalities or race would largely be mixing in their own groups etc with little to no other race among them and vice versa.
Its not easy to get up and talk in front of people. You did a great job! Full of wonderful memories, laughter, for a beautiful friendship!
