The Lip below the switch can be turned around to lock the mic switch on so you don't accidentally turn it off. thats part of its feature. so someone who does not want the ability to turn it off can flip that around and screw it back in.

The little screw with a flap on the samson is so you can flip it around and not be able to turn the switch off accidentally. The very important thing that you missed was looking to see if the samson has a transformer in it. I kind of doubt it because of how light it is but, if you unscrew the top of the sm58 at the second joint (the one below the grlil) you will see inside is a transformer inside potting. This transformer inverts part of the microphones signal in order to reduce any noise introduced into the cable so you can have much longer cable runs. That's why the three pin connector was invented. This can make a difference in a large sound system where there may be up to 250 feet between the microphone and the sound board perhaps through a very long cable snake. This would be nice to know.

thanks. I have bad news for you: no transformer. The wires go straight from the bottom connector to the switch then to the microphone head, (Unless the transformer is embedded in the top head, but its unlikely. Looks just like a plastic microphone. The shaft of the microphone is just open space.

@@ecologicaltime I know this is an old thread, but, notice that they ship with an XLR-to-TS cable and not an XLR-to-TRS cable, which would be needed for a balanced signal. That supports your guess that there is no transformer and that this thing is just sending an unbalanced signal on one pin.

Great review! I was looking for some economical microphones for a rehearsal space and noticed the Samson R21's at a very low price - approximately 1/6 the price of Shure SM58's! With such a large price discrepancy I was skeptical on how a Samson R21 would compare to an SM58 and if it could deliver acceptable sound quality. You did an excellent job of detailing the physical and audio similarities and differences between the two microphones. After watching your review I will probably give the Samson 21's a try (not the 21S as I prefer mics without switches). Thx!

I am a rehearsal room owner and I use Samson R21S microphones. I will put this as simply as possible: they are WAY better than Shure SM58 microphones and are WAY cheaper. The SM58 microphone is overpriced and heavily overrated because it has a low output and is susceptible to feedback, with the Samson microphone being the opposite. Remember, you’re often paying only for the name.

    Great video!
I make a clarification: The plastic lip in the Samson can be used to lock the switch in On position.

I thought of upgrading from my usb mic and was trying to figure out what i need and what to get- i was thinking of getting the sm58 at first, but then i realized a few years back one of my friends brought me a microphone over and i went to look for it. Its a Samson r21, so after this i assume i´ll just stick with that one to figure out how to work everything- i just saved 100 bucks lmao

That 7-8Khz part is from the letter "s" that usually are decreassed with and deesser anyway so its ok that the sm58 have that gap in that range
