Excellent step-by-step instructions for cleaning the Dyson V7 stick. He gets straight to the point, adding commentary on avoiding damage and safety of parts. He doesn't rush the info and speaks clearly. Excellent, 5-star video.
This video is excellent. I’m almost 70, have medium tech skills. Had no problem understanding steps. Did have to go buy a torque screwdriver, inexpensive. With the trip to hardware, it took about 75 minutes from start to finish. Dried everything with a blow dryer on low heat and fan. Thank you so much.
If you are able to do this outside, in the garden on a breezy day it is much better than doing it inside, especially in the kitchen. That dust is everywhere in the air, and if there was a ray of sunlight entering the room it would illustrate the point I make. Rather than brushing and tapping if you have access to a vacuum cleaner that blows use that, outside of course. The harmful germs in that dust are not good to get into your lungs - dog & cat poo, avian bacteria etc. etc. This is not scaremongering it is common sense. As with sanding wood, do it outside on a breezy day and save your lungs!
Great job on explaining everything!! I am researching whether to get the Dyson V7. I have to say that the process of cleaning it (well, watching YOU clean it!) has left me exhausted. How often do people go through that cleaning process? I’m sure I’d never be able to put it back together again, 😂 (and I’m older than the other folks on this post, so…. Yikes)!!
I was worried I may have to replace my vacuum , already! its only about 3 years old. Following your video I have stripped it, cleaned everything and reassembled it, and now it works like a new one. Thank you so much.
This guy explains each Dyson beautifully, straight forward, clear and easy to follow. I have watched all his videos for my Dyson's. No gimmick or silly voices.
Thank you so very much for your helpful and very clear instructions.. You just helped a 72 yr old grandma disassemble and reassemble a machine the first time in her life. I love it!!!
Thanks! for thorough lesson on cleaning the best vacuum cleaner in the world! I live with messy people, so I moved downstairs and experience the peace & calm that comes with living tidy.
Excellent video. I had a pulsating problem in my dyson. I took the filter out and cleaned it thoroughly and the took cap of motor area dry brushed it all out and now works perfectly thanks for the easy steps to follow. Most helpful. I didn’t take mine all apart like you have shown but if I have to will follow your video again to do it. I’m am 75 yrs old and was able,to understand every step that was taken. Thanks for the help !!
I would suggest just to press on the plastic of the metal screeded shroud so you don't bend the plastic with the flat head screw driver. If you press on the front side were the tab is (where you began to pry with with the flat head) and keep going round until it all unclips I found it worked just as good and without the slight damage.
Brother, your comment deserves more likes. I made a few minor scratches on the plastic and even one on the shroud itself when trying to pry it open with a flathead screwdriver. I was about to give up. But, I came across your comment...it took a bit of force, but it worked. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much! Just cleaned mine watching your video. Important Tip: Adding to everyone else's advice, be sure to assemble the bin to the handle first before pushing in the top portion back in. It makes everything fit better. Also, the clips holding the metal filter are very fragile and higher up than you could imagine. Brush works but I found using compressed air outside is much better.
Perfect tutorial. My 5 year old V7 was very ineffective these days. My wife wanted to buy a new one. I just went through the whole tuto (whith some extra cleanning for the motor head brush) and it's like a brand new one. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I just got one of these for a hundred bucks used (because the guys' wife got him a fancier one for Christmas) and it was in dire need of a deep cleaning. Everything is drying overnight and then I'll install the wall mount. Thanks again!
Excellent video, very clear and easy to follow. I wasn't comfortable removing the outer shroud part so I took that bit out to the garage and blew all the dirt out with the leaf blower. I think it's pretty clean now and then I'll put it back together when the washable parts are dry. Thanks for the lesson!
I used an air compressor that was designed for a pneumatic nailer, worked like a charm and I didn't have to take the unit apart as much as you did. Good video for those that don't have an air compressor.
change the filter or remove the existing filter from the frame piece and use compressed air to get the dust dirt out of it and the vacuum will work again with good suction!
I'd imagine probably twice a year and monthly for the main skinny filter, just got a v7 and I'm amazed with the performance for a cordless vacuum, well worth the extra money top notch engineering
Thank you so much for your video. I bought my V7 18 months ago and had no idea how to clean it all. I have cleaned the blue filter before but didn't know how to take it all apart. Now I need to go out and buy T7 and T8 screwdrivers because I don't have any and nor does hubby in his tool kit.
Brilliant video. I bought a replacement battery because our V7 Animal kept pulsing and cutting out. Even with the new battery the problem persisted, so I decided to give this a go - right down the getting in at the inner cyclone. And it's fixed the problem! I can send the replacement battery back, and my Dyson is saved from going to the recycling centre. Many thanks!
I had a very bad odour since I bought D7 mattress and cleaning of filters, this has been on going for 6 months , after opening I found baked on dirt which cause bacteria to grow, now fully washed with disinfectant and soapy water internally as long as plastic and stainless steel fully dried I have had no issues now no smelly vacuum, I went one more stage than you and took next internal top apart very dirty in side. Spot on video , straight forward when you know how 🍻👍
Super impressed with how much detail you go into. My old vacuum is not going to know what hit it when I’m done cleaning it. Thanks very much great job.
Thank you so much! Just purchased a new V7 that was distributed before Dyson had bothered to make online instructions available. Representative who told me this could only send me links to UA-cam videos! Luckily I found yours. Very clear and informative!
Thanks very much. I now know T10 and T8 bits to take it apart. I cleaned it up a bit and turned on without it being 100% dry, now have a moldy smell. Need to take it ALL the way apart like you did and clean all the bits and wipe with a slightly damp rag, let dry. Very calming voice.
Very thorough, easy to follow, and extremely helpful. Now that I've had my v7 vacuum for a little over two years, I an truly say how much I hate it and how much I regret buying it.
@@MrSuperdevin My housemate had a really cheap cordless vacuum that had great suction, great battery life and I could clean the whole thing thoroughly in about 20 minutes with no screws. I just got this V7 today (used) and I can't believe how complicated they've made it. Clearly there's parts here designed to be very fragile so they break and you have to buy a new one
Thank you so much for this excellent video. You take the viewer through all the straps, give clear & succinct instructions, advice on safety measures, at the perfect pace. Your work area is set up well (my dear mother would approve of using the old newspaper on the work surface). This video will help me clean my device & prolong its life which is good for the environment. Thanks again for taking the time to make the video & in turn help others.
Very helpful and easy to follow. I had to pause and start the video often as I did each step. A list of tools I will need would be helpful at the begging of the video. Warning of not getting the contacts wet should come BEFORE he says to rinse the bin.
Agreed, I put mine directly into water. Now it doesn't work. However, I did leave for 2 days to dry. I wonder if my battery is dead, however, it was working before, albeit on/off, on/off constantly despite emptying bin and filter, etc. Any other ideas I could try before I buy a new one?
I can’t believe how easy this was. Thank you my vacuum was disgusting I just got it a month ago and I’m so glad I found this video I thought I was cleaning it until I saw this. 🙏🏻 many thanks
Thanks a lot for making this. I didn't make it all the way through - once you got round to removing screws I quit. Why would Dyson make it so difficult to clean the thing? But Ill get to it some day and in the meantime- thanks - it's much cleaner than when I started.
Great detailed information. I just cleaned my V7 watching your video. Thank you for all your help! I like the idea of compressed air ( by Jay). I used running water in All plastic parts and let the parts dry really good for half a day. It is working very well. I would do this deep cleaning maybe once in 2 years. Except for the small blue filter.
Extremely well made video unlike the extremely complicated Dyson - you shouldn't have to "field strip" a vacuum cleaner in order to . . . clean it! Well done.
I've used this video each time I clean the machine. Just did the first cleaning with removing the Torx screws and all. Excellent pictures to get it right! Thanks.
The first time I want to give multiple thumbs up. I am on the fence of buying a dyson v7, because they are so expensive. This video helps me make up my mind.
You missed to put apart the canister, there were more very hidden t8 screws in it, i did mine bc it was very dirty, I ended up washing the plastic parts and will wait a day to completely dry before putting it together, thanks for taking your time to make this helpful video.
My 1 year old loves playing with the vacuum and he dropped it and cracked the bin. I am in a heap of trouble with the wife bc she repeatedly told me not to let our son play with the vacuum. This video has literally saved my a$$! Thanks Gov!
excellent vid. thanks. thought about taking the crown apart with the 2 screws, but there didn't seem to be much give and it's not worth braking the beast.
Thank you for the comprehensive tutorial. I was looking for guidance on cleaning the filter on the back of the motor however and it wasn’t addressed in this video. It looks like a small aircleaner and appears to be all one with the plastic piece that comes off the machine. Any tips on cleaning this? Thanks so much
Great demonstration that is easy to replicate by watching the video step by step, as you progress through the cleaning and putting it back together. Thank you!
Great video! My V7 Animal Dyson was cutting out every 3 seconds and the battery wouldnt last beyond the upstairs of the home. Only fiddely bit is getting the metal mesh surround off with the flat head screw driver (at 6mins 10 seconds)...where you can void the warranty. I think I bent the plastic and it doesnt fit back as neatly, so suggest youre very careful here. I also didnt know (until this video mentioned it) that you could get replacement batteries, got one on Amazong for £25. Longer lasting and so easy to install. I just did a clean (with the new battery too) and it works like a charm!
Really helpful video. Thank you. One care point - The outer shroud can get easily damaged when using a flathead screwdriver. I removed mine by flexing the shroud and it came off quite easily.
Absolutely fantastic tuition, considering I am not technical at all, this was really easy to follow, I wish everything was as easy to follow, well done!
Great video, thank you! I now have a problem with the small attachment for the stairs. The brush doesn't turn. I wanted to take it apart to clean it, but it won't slide out.
good video thanks. just to confirm, the v7 onlt has the 1 filter - the skinny filter , is that right and not a post motor fillter as a 2nd one. just checking. thanks
It does depend which V7 model you have. If you have the V7 Absolute then it does have an extra filter on the back which is washable in addition to the skinny filter in the middle of the vacuum.
Very useful video - got me to 'first base' disassembling the cyclone unit as without it I'd never dare to apply the amount of force it takes to remove the shroud! But having got to the maximum extent of your disassembly why not go all the way? I found that the filter housing simply pulls off the bottom of the cyclone manifold and this reveals four more torx screws (well buried between the cyclones and hidden by dirt). Then there are two more in the air outlet port. Remove these six and the two halves of the manifold come apart. Then the internal parts lift out and the unit is stripped down to components for most thorough cleaning. I think you may have cost Dyson a V11 or even a V15 sale!
I have a question. I have just followed this excellent video to clean my daughters V7 for her. I have a V 8 and wondering why your video for the V8 doesn't pull it apart as much. There are no undoing screws.
At 2:48 you mention to not get the contacts wet - I stupidly followed this tutorial step by step without watching the full thing first! I submerged the whole thing in water and did get the contacts wet - is there any way of salvaging?
what size of screwdriver do you need to open the bottom part at 0:57? I mistakenly tried to open it with the wrong size and it won't open and I've damaged the plastic around it
Great video - thank you. I used an air compressor to blow the dust out of the chambers and it was very effective. Make sure you do that outside and wear a mask.
Only part I had a difficult time was taking the last piece with the flathead screwdriver but thanks 🙏🏼 hope it smells better when I start cleaning or I’m calling dyson directly ☺️☺️☺️
Great stuff, that saves me pouring over my manual that I can't find. Just one tip, if you soaked that neswspaper and stuck it in the sink it would make your clean up easier and keep the dust down, regards Graham
I was following through, then he mentioned "avoid the metal to get wet" after he rinsed it and I also did the same, so too late for me now. Hope this vacuum still works! I am still putting them away to dry.
Very good video , but think you should show that the long cylinder filter clips apart as inside in can be heavily blocked and if so your Dyson v7 hoover could still keep pulsing or cause much lower run time , if you just ran it under the tap and left to dry for 24hrs and didn’t clip it apart and clear out the blockage as very common fault for low run times .
Thank you so much for this quick and easy tutorial. I did everything except remove screws. Maybe next time I'll buy the special driver. Excellent video. 😊
Thorough and very good step by step instructions. But along with that one of the things I appreciate most is that your machine was actually dirty and needed cleaning so that we could see each step and how each method (water, wipe or brush). I find watching "how to clean/fix" videos that a have perfectly clean/working Whatever-I'm-Trying-to-Fix frustrating. So, your "how to" was that much more thorough for that reason. What this tells me, though, is that my V7 is probably filthy because I have NEVER cleaned it this thoroughly.
I cant imagine for a second Dyson expects any customer to unscrew the device like this. If you are OCD or something then this video is for you. The filter is meant to be cleaned and the roller head as well. NO company would want you taking their stuff apart to this level on a regular basis.
Thank you so much for this video. I changed the filters as recommended but noticed a lingering smell in the machine. After cleaning it with your instruction back to being like new! Thank you! A shame your shop is so far from me, otherwise i'd pop in for my next electrical purchase!
My v7 has just started to stop spinning after a few seconds. In particular when I hoover forward and then pull back. It's never had this issue before so I'll try giving it a deep clean like in your video. Any other suggestions would be welcome 👍🏻

Great video, thank you! I now have a problem with the small attachment for the stairs. The brush doesn't turn. I wanted to take it apart to clean it, but it won't slide out.
It does sound odd, as most of the time it should just slide out. If it is blocked then it may mean getting a screwdriver and gently prising it out.

Thank you for putting this video on UA-cam. Visually the best way for me to learn how to clean my V7.😊
Good video very useful, DYSON should be paying you for producing such a good job
What makes you think they are not ??
Dyson would rather you bought a new one when the old one gets glogged up.
Weak eye dominant Not really! Ii is up to the customer to maintain their appliances in top conditions.
Extremely satisfying video! Thank you for helping a stay at home mom in need 👍🏻
Thanks for the great feedback.
At 2:48 you mention to not get the contacts wet - I stupidly followed this tutorial step by step without watching the full thing first! I submerged the whole thing in water and did get the contacts wet - is there any way of salvaging?
You may be ok but make sure it is completely dry before you try and switch the vacuum on
what size of screwdriver do you need to open the bottom part at 0:57? I mistakenly tried to open it with the wrong size and it won't open and I've damaged the plastic around it
Annoyingly i don't have the actual size of the screwdriver, but you can also use a coin as it is a bit thicker which may work better for you.
This guy lets his wife do the cleanup!
Geriatric woman here, great instructions! My main problem was the battery.
I was following through, then he mentioned "avoid the metal to get wet" after he rinsed it and I also did the same, so too late for me now. Hope this vacuum still works! I am still putting them away to dry.
so, did it affect the functionality?
Great Video and love to see he got dressed up for the occasion.
hahahaha I noticed that too !! Rule Britannia ;)
Superb video, ty sir it was very clear and relaxing at the same time. Now it's my turn to clean my own Dyson.
Watched your video so I can clean my dyson before passing it on to my mom. And here I am at 2am cleaning my dyson. Lol!
Great video showing in simple terms what crud gets stuck inside these machines and how to clean it again.
Glad to know this was helpful for you, thanks for the feedback 👍
Thanks for making this video. I was able to clean the Dyson in a short amount of time and best of all stress free!
Thank you so much for such a good video. I just bought a V7 (other videos made me question my decision ) but after using it I am very happy.
Thank you so much for providing this information, you made it so easy to disassemble and clean by just following your step by step presentation!
Thank you so much for this quick and easy tutorial. I did everything except remove screws. Maybe next time I'll buy the special driver. Excellent video. 😊
Thanks very much for that, glad it was helpful for you.
Thank you for this excellent video my friend. My wife's v7 is as good as new. She's happy, so I am too thanks to you. Have a good Day! 🙂
A detailed video, very helpful, I thought I would have to replace the battery but after I cleaned all the part it works like new.
Thats great to hear, thanks for the feedback.
If you
are OCD or something then this video is for you. The filter is meant to be cleaned and
the roller head as well. NO company would want you taking their stuff apart to this level on a regular basis.
1:42 - would have been useful to clean this part out completely rather than just the superficial cleaning offered.
Thank you so much for this video. I changed the filters as recommended but noticed a lingering smell in the machine. After cleaning it with your instruction back to being like new! Thank you! A shame your shop is so far from me, otherwise i'd pop in for my next electrical purchase!
Always great to hear it has helped you, thanks for the feedback
My v7 has just started to stop spinning after a few seconds. In particular when I hoover forward and then pull back. It's never had this issue before so I'll try giving it a deep clean like in your video.
Any other suggestions would be welcome 👍🏻
