Lyrics:
Long ago, there lived a girl
Who listened to an angel’s tale
That she was the tabernacle
For the Son of God.
She didn’t hesitate or plead,
Instead she got down on her knees,
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”
She visited her cousin who
Was carrying her own child, too,
And as he leapt within her womb
The girl sang for joy:
“My soul proclaims the Lord’s greatness,
My spirit exalts in my Savior.
Holy is the name of my child.”
She sang,
“Love, what a gift you are to me,
I’ll hold you close forever.
O bless God for leading you into my life,
Always and evermore I will love you, little child.”
As months passed, she traveled with
Her husband to David’s royal place,
And there among the lowly she gave birth to her child.
A star shone bright, the angels sang,
But all the girl could do was stare
Upon the face of God, her baby child.
And she sang,
“Love, what a gift you are to me,
I’ll hold you close forever.
O bless God for leading you into my life,
Always and evermore I will love you, little child.”
It really was a sim’lar scene,
Gazing upon her now grown child,
Holding him within her arms upon the cold, hard ground.
Deep was the wound that pierced her heart
To see her baby die for us,
She grieved for him as I now grieve for you.
It’s painful that I’ll never get
To meet you here upon this earth,
And yet I know you’ll find peace
In the palm of God’s hand,
The One who gave us Mary
To be a mother for us all;
Go, my child, into her waiting arms.
Where she’ll sing,
“Child, what a gift you are to me,
I’ll hold you close forever.
O bless God for leading you into my life,
Always and evermore I will love you, little child.”
Thanks, Lord, for leading my baby safely home,
A home filled with peace and joy,
With our mother to hold their hand,
Always and evermore I will love you, little child.
Recorded at Our Lady of the Visitation Parish in Darnestown, Maryland.
