Stock SM57 vs. Transformerless vs. TAB Transformer - Electric Guitar Shootout

- FOR AUDIO CLIPS, SKIP TO 2:40 -------- This video is an experiment to show the differences between the SM57 (stock), the Transformerless version (provided by ZenPro Audio) and the upgraded Transformer version (from TAB) also provided by ZenPro Audio. ALSO - make sure to keep in mind that this is just ONE mic position! There are hundreds of ways to mic a guitar cabinet. That's yet another reason why my conclusions are what they are (skip to 6:26)
Make sure to check out all of the versions, and tell us what you think in the comments. Also check out www.recordingloungepodcast.com
The transformerless really rounds off those abrasive highs. I can see where it might be too dark in a mix but by itself I thought it sounded better than the others on the drive and lead tones.
Damn, this is perfect example how awesome playing sounds great no matter what you put it through :)
+TheKingKorg thanks!
That finger picking ditty did my ears right. Nice playing man.
man that clean version 2 clip was a dream to listen to!! love that little piece.. also, I usually track e.g. with ribbons so you know im gonna love that transformer less 57! haha
Nice video man! Your playing is great, especially that finger picking stuff was just really nice. Gotta say I think I like the stock 57 the best, followed by the mod, followed by no transformer. However, different situation calls for different tones! Nice arsenal to have all three of them.
Man, really digging that transformerless action. Great video!
great video dude. Hello from Ireland's most classic SSL recording studio :-)
your the best man. I just purchased some Digital reference mics that are SM57 sounding. I was looking into the upgraded transformer. This video helped out a lot. Thanks, And love the podcast as well sir.
+brian conaway thank you Brian!
Amazing guitar playing!
The TAB Version is definitely more sonically Even tone. I think I'll go with that for my metal guitar tracks. Beautiful demo.
Great video, thanks!
The amp sounds killer!
I like the TAB transformer! But I'd rather get another sm75 for that price
Nice playing too
amazing! thanks
Definitely version 2 (the no-transformer)....really warm and smooth.
omfg u r an amazing player
Great video, and great playing! I pretty much agree word for word with your conculsion. The transformerless one sounds like it would "take" eq better than the others. If it was my money, I'd buy two 57s and take the transformer out of one, instead of buy one 57 with the upgraded transformer. Thanks for the vid!
Just posted a new video with the Unidyne SM57. Think you’d enjoy it!
I was digging the transformerless a lot on the clean stuff. Just cleaner, rounder, bigger. But man the stock was much better with the dirty, the transformerless went totally limp.
I think for me the most important factor isn't the Frequency response, but rather the impulse response. Transformerless beats in that regard. The others sound like they have a fast attack compressor on em.
Dude can play!
Great comparison… thanks. Liked the transformer less version much better, lot more smoother and sweeter with much wider tonal range on both hi’s and lows.
What's the fingerpicked piece? It's amazing!
Thank you! This is a little riff I learned from Mateus Asato. Vibey as heck!
What about the AMI T58 transformer?
I thought the stock sm57 works best on distorted guitar because it has more high-end push which contributes to the distorted sound. One acoustic guitar, it seemed to have too much honk in the mids. This was cleaned up by the transformerless version, but maybe too much. The TAB version seemed to strike a balance between the two.
My God this fingerpicking part was beautiful. Tabs?
I do like the sound of no transformer. I did the mod to my microphone. The loss of volume and the need to boost it up again is a problem, however. Everything becomes noisier when you record with it.
The transformerless still works great on loud sources like snare and loud guitar Amps but yeah the drop in output is significant!! Like 10db easily.
Neither curve comparison shows differences likely to be audible; they must be equalized, given the 10dBl lower transformerless output, which may creat noticably greater noise levels. All in all, effects and equalizers will provide far more distinct sounds than these minimal differences in raw mic output.
The stock 57 is great.
what riff is that around the 4:00 minute mark? so soulful
Hey, Kendal!
I'd love to talk you into an update to this. The way you described the transformerless 57 on the guitar cab is similar to how I would describe an SM7B on a guitar cab.
Is that a possible comparison video update you could do? "Just" a quick "here are the capsules lined up and pointed at the same spot on the cab comparison" video?
...unless maybe you've already done a comparison and have some specific thoughts you'd like to share?
Thanks again for all the info and thinking material, Kendal!
+DontWorryImAPilot so essentially just a Transformerless 57 versus SM7 video?
Yep!
The Tab Was awsome. Loved how it was in the middle ground. just sucks the transformer is over $100 canadian lol. Still have to do this mod! Can you please do this shootout on a snare drum? Also , just a thought, you could try a transformerless mod with a 680 ohm resistor wired across pins 2 and 3 to better match the impedance to the preamp as the transformerless has more of an impedance drop!
I used to have a cable wired with the resistors, but I can’t find it anymore! I don’t recall it making a huge difference, but then again, that was like 7 years ago. Need to try that again!
Helpful video, and sublime guitar playing on the clean/fingerpicking clip! Is that any particular piece? - I want to hear more!
+flypieTV it's a Mateus Asato line. Check him out, you'll be in heaven.
@@RecordingLounge Which song from Mateus ?
@@kianhendrick3794 for real id like to know as well
I can’t remember if it’s from a song or not. I think I learned it from one of his Instagram videos years ago. Sorry that’s not much of a help!
@@RecordingLounge maybe a cover is in order, or a tab :) thats a serious tune, trying to work out some of it now
damn anyone sound good in this video. I think my fav is the upgraded transformer. Dont know, its kinda a sweet version of the stock, meaning it tamed those high freq. I think the transformeless could do a cheap version of the royer 121 paired with any of the other sm 57, maybe.
The Transformerless 57 was warmer... The upgraded 57 had more aggression... Neither made me feel like I needed to have any work done to a 57... Im a recording eng... Guess I would just EQ it...lol
Yeah... I still use the normal 57 most of the time, BUT the transformer-less is nice on snare. ;)
The Recording Lounge ahhhh i could see that. Nice warm snare sound. Not brittle.
Exactly, and the transformerless Version is about 7-10db lower output than stock, so it’s much easier to gain stage and manage levels on the way in.
That being said... I still prefer the Telefunken M80 on snare. Lol
Of course the AMI Transformer sounds the most beautiful.
The new transformer is the best
Tbh i dont hear much of a difference. The sm57 just nails it. I dont know why people say its a bad mic. The e609 and others may be smoother but i love that bite on heavier stuff.
I’d say I use the stock SM57 the most out of all three of these. There’s definitely something about it that just sounds right.
The clean sounded so similar... And then the distorted tone was pretty different... intreresting
What is that amp you're playing through?
+Preston Keepfer this is a Dumble style amp that I had custom built for me
@@RecordingLounge the amp absolutely rips. sweet jesus that tone is to die for..
