      Yes please. Do an episode on dehydrating. I do a lot of outdoor activities and carrying regular food just weigh a lot. Would be great to lighten the load by dehydrating the food I need.

    I hate cold boots! Here's a little trick for your boots: Since you had a fire, put a couple of medium size rocks that will fit in your boot, into the fire and let them heat up. When you put the fire out before bed, use a stick to move the rocks out of the coals. Let them cool enough to be gingerly handled, put each rock into the socks you hiked in turned inside out, being sure the rocks have cooled enough to not burn your socks, the put the hot-rocks-in-socks into your boots. Your boots and socks will be warm and dry in the morning.🌿❄️

    • @Zioniu
      @Zioniu 7 місяців тому +1

      Better to boil the rocks. The fire can, in rare cases cause expansion of liquid or gas and have them explode

    Dog sleeping bag idea= Best we found so far for our cold-sensitive Weimaraner mix is a good quality (of your choice and budget) rectangular bag that we took to the upholstery place and had them re-sew the zipper just a little over halfway up (to her size she can be fully in the bag curled up or uncurled). Pricey in the end but extremely useful and keeps her warm. All the best and happy holidays.

    Just a note to say that it’s risky to hit your knife with your axe poll, especially in really cold weather when your steel can actually be more brittle. Use a small log to baton your knife when splitting or just use your axe.

    Hey, you… you are wonderful. Thank you for the honesty, the edition, and the time put into this Channel. I appreciate the human beings like you.
    There are such pleasures that we can feel and are often forgotten in this industrialized and capitalist world.
    I, living at the moment in a jungle of concrete in NYC, with money as the principal worried of people, and of course materialism…. I had to have a way out, at least for the weekends. There aren’t many people to share, but I have been going for the past year solo camping upstate. Recently I traveled to Milos in Greece for backpacking and was a delight.
    I discovered a way to do trips or short getaways thanks to channels like this.
    To beautiful people like you, inspiring.
    Thank you.

  • @markofdistinction6094
    @markofdistinction6094 Рік тому +3

    I make most of my own backpacking food using a dehydrator. Many veggies re-hydrate well (mushrooms, carrots & peas, onion, broccoli, sweet peppers). Many meats work well too ... mix 1lb ground turkey/beef w 1/3 cup plain bread crumbs, then cook, then dehydrate. Shrimp and thinly sliced sausage re-hydrate well too. Then its just a matter of adding in some dry sauce mix, rice or noodles and you have a huge number of options for home-made backpacking food.
    Many veggies re-hydrate well in cold water. Cabbage & grated carrots make a good base for coleslaw (just bring a little bottle of oil and vinegar). Backpacking burritos can be made by re-hydrating red peppers, grated carrots & cabbage in cold water ... just re-hydrate dry black beans & instant rice in hot water, add a small can of salsa and a small block of cheese and you have a great backpacking burrito.

    Another great video! I got a laugh out of the part where you explained the importance of a warm sleeping pad and said it should have an R value of at least 4. But thanks to Kyro yours was only 3. Obviously you think it is more important to be out there than to be perfectly comfortable. As Nike says, just do it! I love the way you just do things. Often you don't do them just the way I would, but you are never paralyzed by indecision. It is a characteristic of successful people to keep moving forward no matter what. As a lifetime outdoorsman, you have my total respect!

    Great Vid! Depending on conditions burying the tent pegs in snow can end up bad if it becomes a block of ice, tie off to logs or rocks sometimes better option. Nalgene makes a stainless steel which is heavier but in a pinch can be put in the fire to boil should you have a jet boil break.

    For sleep comfort, the Savotta FDF Sleeping Pad is water proof, wide, warm and basically damage proof. Remember, while an air mattress is a comfort, in the winter, the air in the mattress will cool. It could cause the body to get cold. And, because it is cold, the mattress may naturally loose some air. Zippo Lighter fluid is my survival carry. It helps to light wood quickly. Cheers to your enthusiasm. Thanks for sharing your insights. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!

    • @ryancooper3629
      @ryancooper3629 Рік тому +1

      Mmmm, I'd respectfully disagree. A military style pad like the FDF prioritizes invincibility over performance and portability. For this reason its only has an insulation R value of 2 while weighing almost a kg and it rolls up so large that it effectively has to be stored externally on the backpack. Great for 200lb navy seal who needs it to last for months pounding through a warzone. Much less great for a 5'4" young woman who is already struggling with a 35lb pack doing heavy vertical in the mountains.
      Compare to say the Neolite Xtherm which is half the weight, packs down to the size of a Nalgene, and has an R value of 6.9.

    You’re becoming quite the outdoorsman! Here in U.S. seems like so many just wait for summertime to camp/backpack so they really don’t run into as many problems to be solved. It’s interesting to see you deal with the extra challenges that come with winter; getting enough wood, getting dry wood, starting and keeping a fire going, staying warm and dry, keeping dog warm, etc. Also love how you do it all as an ordinary “Joe”. Just making it happen over a weekend and doing it relatively cheap. Very relatable and helpful. Keep up the good work!👍

    I wonder if you could use something like a SnugPak Jungle Blanket as a puppy option? Assuming he doesn’t need a full winter bag/quilt, it would be a relatively compact option. It’s easy to sew channels into the borders for drawstrings to cinch one end closed like a sleeping bag. With a second warm Nalgene for him, it might work. Just thought. Good luck with the move!

    One minor safety recommendation: When you are pushing down the dead standing tree, you may want to consider closing your folding saw so the teeth aren't exposed. I was imagining in my head the tree going down, the stump end coming up and whacking your saw, and the saw hitting you. No bueno!

    Quick tip regarding your saw! I could be mistaken about this, but judging by ear you are putting the same amount of force in both the forward and backward stroke, your technique could do with some adjusting.
    Your saw only cuts when you pull it towards you, so you could potentially cut more efficiently saving energy or cutting quicker by not using it like a conventional saw. I learnt that the hard way when I first started using these types of saws.
    Also regarding the sleeping bag, I bought a second hand Junior bag and cut/sew it to half length for my dog.
