- Drone video reveals the moment Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory telescope collapsed. The first video provides a view looking up at the platform and starts with the massive telescope still attached to the cable. It begins to sway, which the moment main cable snapped from one its support tower. The platform breaks away from the cable, splits into pieces and disappears from the frame. A second view shows the cable attached to Tower 4 before it fails. It violently breaks away from the tower, which not only drops the platform but triggers a reaction that causes other supports to break - bringing down the entire telescope. Ramon Lugo, director of the Florida Space Institute at the University of Central Florida, told DailyMail.com that he and his colleagues had alerted the National Science Foundation to Arecibo's deterioration on Monday and said it would collapse this week.

Finally got those filthy snipers
Not THAT ridiculous, really. The Arecibo radiotelescope had already been decomissioned since it had been declared unsafe. Basically this saved some effort.
Sad to see it go. It was a true icon of science and radiotelescopy.
Yes, i am a grand fan of space and i totally agree whit you. It's not ridiculous.
It's pretty sad. 😥
Thanks for info G
it was still operatinal, we lost time and money on that event. i hope these people are in some serious situiation or have been.
@@marTn3 what was your job title at the Arecibo Radio Telescope facility?
I must be old because the only video game ive seen this in is 007
I think an Engineer might need to do some explaining
It collapsed because they didn’t repair the supports. It has been breaking down before, but they didn’t have the money to fix it so they just left it and after some time is collapsed
It's over 50 years old... I'm surprised it lasted that long.
@@perman6647 how much would it have cost to repair it? or how much was thhe whole telescope worth?
that C4 came in handy !
Is this Battlefield 4?
levolution event started
chicken
I like how drone missed the best part.
battlefield 4 anyone ?
Not "ridiculous". Wasn't the "world's largest telescope". Well, you got "moment" and "collapses" right, I guess.
someone's c4 blew that up
*battlefield 4 music intensifies*
It's ridonkulous!!
I destroy it so many times in Video Games
no more campers

Was that Controlled?
I'm not sure but I know that the telescope/facility had been decommissioned and was set to be demolished later on. I guess that without the need for repairs (since it was out of use) it just kinda sat there until it gave in
No, it wasn't controlled. One of the main cables had failed, they knew it was unsafe, so they evacuated it and were inspecting it by remote drone to see if it could be repaired and brought back into service. As you can see, the answer was "no".
So sad to see
Battlefield 4!

Wow ur late this happened on the 3rd
Leaked Clip of the Battlefield 6 Trailer
Lo de Puerto Rico
How did that even happen?
Not enough maintenance given I suppose. Lack of money or corruption
Why is this in my recommended
gravity.
Of course it is ridiculous
Battlefield 4 ?
No, it's not ridiculous, it's sad for all the people who like space like me.
Owch
did i missed something? cause the way the drone and ground cameras footge are set, looks to be something planned ahead, theres no accident here
No, it wasn't planned. But they did know it was unsafe because one of the main cables had failed a couple of weeks before the final collapse. It was evacuated while remote inspections were carried out to see if it could be repaired.
