- Today, I'm tackling the question: Can homeschooled kids go to college? Won't it be a problem if they don't have a diploma from a "real high school"? I'm sharing practical advice on preparing for college, from my experience as a homeschooled student, and from my experience preparing homeschooled students for college.

Very very encouraging! So many times people say “you’re going to homeschool EVEN in high school?!”
Yes! And many families do stop homeschooling before high school because they feel intimidated by it. I hope to encourage others to not be so intimidated, because it's not as scary as it sounds!

It's easy for it to seem overwhelming when you're reading about all the requirements--but we've found that homeschool high school and going to college afterwards has not been difficult.

Wow! We also live in a place where homeschooling isn't common, so I've gotten quite a few questions about it. Thank you so much for the positive feedback and encouragement. I have long toyed with the idea of continuing my education and maybe 'retiring' as a professor when my kids are grown.
I had no clue you went to college when you were so young!! I absolutely believe that people who were homeschooled can go to college and do so well!
I kinda really liked going to college at that age, because it was really nice to be all DONE by the time I was 20, haha!

I'm not gonna lie, it was really nice to be DONE with college at 20 and able to move on to new adventures. :) I always liked learning though, and thrived in college classes, and have thought about moving on with my education...but I've found that life after 20 has been plenty "full." :)

High school is coming closer and closer! Honestly, it's so fun! I love homeschooling older kids! Little kid learning is fun, too, but high school is one of my favorite seasons of homeschool. :)

I follow a bunch of UK homeschooling moms, although I don't know so much about the technicalities of how it works there! One of the things I've loved best about homeschooling has been the flexibility, for travel, to focus on things that are important to us as a family (like bilingualism!), etc.

I know that it's not an option in some countries, but for those countries that do allow it, it's an option that works very well for some families!
Love this advice! My kids are still in elementary but this was my husbands first concern when we started discussing homeschool.
That's awesome that he was thinking about it so early! It is important to think about and plan for...but not worry about! You guys definitely can do it if you decide to homeschool all the way till college!

How about if you just need it to get a decent job?
@@jennyquezada9644 If the job application asks for a high school diploma, then any homeschooled graduate can send in the diploma issued by the parents. I have not actually experienced jobs that require submitting a high school diploma for a job app, but if they do, it should be no problem to comply with that request.

I’m excited for this video. Our oldest daughter plans to graduate at 16, and that is only a few years away.
That's awesome! I graduated homeschool high school at 16 as well!
How do you calculate (divide) the credits?
I don't do anything complicated - if a 9th grader takes a 1 year Algebra 1 course, they get 1 credit. If they take a 1 semester Health Science course, they get 1/2 credit.

Oh I'm still debating to homeschool or not to homeschool! My oldest is 4 and she'll go to reception in September but I keep thinking maybe I should try homeschooling! It's a hard decision:)
It is a hard decision! And for so many, school is looking so different from normal this year, which is one reason that many parents are thinking about temporarily homeschooling.
I'm in Louisiana, and I'm confused. How many credits & what classes to take? Act or Sat? Idk
Check your own state's graduation requirements as well as the admissions requirements of the potential colleges you're looking at. You will usually be able to break it all down into 6-8 credits per high school year. I took both the ACT and the SAT, but again, check with the colleges you look at to see if they have a preferred entrance exam.
What is the best way to keep transcript records? I think I’ve seen a computer program for it years ago but I’m not sure.
We're not very high tech, I'm sure there are programs, but we've always just kept a template in a Word Doc and added to it each semester or year, and that's worked great for us. We store it on dropbox or google drive so that there's no risk of losing it if the computer dies. I lived and worked in China (teaching English at a government high school) before moving to where we currently live, and in the five years that we've lived here, I've had good relationships with a few families from mainland China whose kids are here to get an education at international, English-medium schools, but the parents don't speak any English at all. I think some of the most challenging conversations I've ever held in Chinese have been on the topic of attempting to explain why kids aren't taught to read in English using the same methods that work in Chinese. I still don't know what the real word for "phonics" is--but...got the explanation across in the end. And now, my youngest sister is half-Chinese and Mandarin is her heritage language, so I'm helping her practice it during her school days. So...yes, it has been a surprisingly useful major. :)
If my daughter is homeschooled and I give her the Diploma will she be able to still get Financial aid
Yes--in the US, you'll have to meet the graduation requirements of your state. There are different forms of Financial aid--government aid is dependent on your FAFSA. Academic scholarships are usually based on a combo of grades (on her transcript) and college entrance exam scores (like the SAT). I highly recommend preparing well for the SAT and ACT if your child is looking for a good scholarship package--high scores can make a big difference when it comes to the amount of scholarships offered by a college.

We've always just used a template in a document and stored it in Dropbox or Google drive, somewhere where it's sure to not get lost, and updated it yearly. It's not nearly as scary as it sounds....but it IS important, and I think that's what makes it seem intimidating.

i went to public school they never mailed me my diploma and they never will done asked so its not important i guess
hahaha! Yes, I don't think the diploma is very important, I've never needed one (we have needed our college diplomas for our jobs in Asia, as documentation for visa applications), but for high school, we only needed the transcripts.
I’m a home schooler,but I got specialty graduation card, how do I study abroad in the United States?i want to know.
Look up the college you are interested in studying at, and find out their application process (if you are not from the USA, each college has its own application process for international students). Usually, you need to make an account, and submit your high school transcript, SAT scores (SAT is the college entrance exam, and is available to be taken in most countries at species testing centers), letters of recommendation, and further information. If you are accepted to a college, they will send you paperwork that will allow you to apply for a student visa.

@@realangel777 Many colleges will accept a GED instead of a diploma + transcript, but you just have to check on the specific college you're looking into. The big thing that you will need besides a GED, is an SAT score. That's the most widely-accepted college entrance exam in the USA.

I just checked the relevant information, as long as you are under the age of 17.
