My daughter is Autistic, suffers from Epilepsy and ADHD. I waited until she is now 12. I have tried applying, and I still haven't heard anything back. I'm a single parent who works and goes to school full time. I need it it's very expensive to have a person who is medically trained and also skilled in homeschooling her as well as help socialize her in other programs, and then there are the medical bills. I had to quit my 15 year career in law enforcement after gaining full custody of her just so I can be here for her. I am now in medical school to learn more about how I can get her to her full potential as well as this will be my new career upon graduation. The system is too slow and sometimes offers help to the wrong people.
You're doing such a wonderful job mama. I hope things turn out well for you
It took us almost 2 years, but finally, it did come through with backpay. The system is pretty broken, but hang in there.
Thank you 🙏🏽 good thing I didn’t follow through when they offered it!!!! I wouldn’t want that for my child…. He have a lot of years to go to have a turn around!!!
Well I don't think that's a big deal if they can't get back on once they have a full time job especially if they are really capable of working with no issues
Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you for the insight !
very informative. thanks
Thanks for the information. My granddaughter has been diagnosed with non- verbal autism.
Good to know. Thank You
THANK YOU
Thank you for that info!!!!!! Very helpful!!!!!!!
Great points!!!
Thanks you for this information
Thank uu
I know this was 6 years ago so I don't know if you'll see this. I planned to get this and my son is 4 years but I didn't know it can have this effect as an adult. We are currently running from "dad" and living in a shelter and we do need it but I'll explore being his PCA and other things before doing this. Thank you for this video.
The way things are going u can’t count on what programs are around 20 yrs from now
So helpful
We applied for our 5 year old autistic son a few years ago but was denied because we owned two cars. Old cars at that, one worth $8k and another worth $5k at the time🤷🏽♀️
Can I ask what state? Wondering if it's the same here in California
I'm an unemployed single father. I have lost numerous jobs because of having to leave or call in.. should I apply? My son is 8
@@taylord7261 I'm not disabled my son is!
Yes, if it's affecting your job and show them that you need to be their for your child's disability. Is he diagnosed through a doctor??
@@bumblebee9335 yes he is.. And he's been denied twice
@@joshuachurch1923 did they say why he was denied?? Is he high functioning?
@@bumblebee9335 he is non verbal, and his papers say he functions at a 2yr old level and he is 8.. they said he doesn't qualify
My son was diagnosed with autism at two years old, and my youngest daughter was diagnosed with syngap 1. It has been over a year and a half since I applied for SSI for my son and we barely got approved last month and we are still waiting to receive the backpay and monthly benefits so in reality it takes anywhere from one to two years to receive the benefits.
Thanks for this my son is 14 and just getting his diagnosis. I do work full time as well and get medical assistance for all 3 of us including my daughter. I didn’t think about how it may put us of the income scale for medical benefits
Could you please guide us to reliable sources where we can find answers regarding the OPWDD program and whether it is worth applying for, especially if it includes ABA? Additionally, we have other questions related to this issue for which we have been unable to find answers anywhere. It seems like everyone seemingly focused on financial gain from the situation but they don’t care about a child himself.
What can parents (beneficiary) use their child's SSI for once they get it?
Thank you
My son is slightly autistic he can improve over time. However I need to be a SAHM because my career would have a huge toll on my time that I wouldn’t spend time with my kids. I feel like I shouldn’t need SSI for that long. Only when my son gets into elementary school. Right now he’s barely getting any services because of insurance issues and not enough teachers. Idk what to start first
I know it is hard to know where to start but if you're hoping to find fully remote work from home job then follow Thressa Sweat. She posts daily. I've decided NOT to apply for SSI for my son and get a fully remote job after watching this video and how it may affect him in the future. I also feel like I won't need SSI for long but I want to be proactice about how it may affect him in the future as an adult.
Does this applies to now 2021
We just got approved for my sons disability. In the letter I received there was a long list of rules about what it can and can’t be used for. it seems I can’t use it to supplement the income. I’ve lost having to stay home with him. Is there any chance you can make a video to clear that up?
I was told to apply now because it hard to apply when their older?
For many of these children, the question has literally never been ‘should you get’ but ‘could you even get it?’
I got denied Social Security disability, after acquiring footdrop from spine trauma. They just told me to switch careers and go find something else to do. So I can only imagine how difficult it is to get assistance if you are slightly autistic. It’s gotta be rough.
I am a 71 y o who adopted my grandchild who is on SS disability and will turn 16 soon. I would like for him to work part time in the summer for experience. I do need his SS income for our home budget. Will working part time affect his SS amount?
I live in Virginia and my son is autistic we get Medicaid but I am about to start working full time will he lose his benefits
Are you talking about SSDI or SSI?
Now my son is 18 coverages have changed?
My child got denied because I own a home I rent out. 😢
I was denied for my income any suggestions?
Will it effect food stamp benefits
Does ours.. By a chunk
My 6 year old son was recently diagnosed with Autism through his school and currently has an IEP and was sent to a different school to better suit his needs. He knows lots of words but cannot communicate and doesnt understand social cues.Im wondering if i need a docotors opinion? I started the SSI application online and need to call for an appointment to complete the process. Thanks for your video.
How did this go?
Take him to see a pediatric neurologist or psychologist to take the ADOS test to diagnose his autism. It will also help if you can get him into ABA therapy for additional documentation of his autism. You should also looking speech and occupational therapy. I have my son in all 3 therapies and he's made so much progress!
Hello, I'm going through this exact situation with my 5 year old. Was the school's diagnosis enough, or did ssi still need a doctor's diagnosis? I want to start the application also.
@@voxxy85 I finally heard from the social security office a couple weeks ago. And was told that he was favorable for benefits and we had to send in paystubs. Wishing you luck
@@voxxy85 There's a small chance that they would accept the school's diagnosis but you should definitely get a medical diagnosis from either a neurologist or psychologist. If he receives therapy you want to send them the evaluation from the therapist also.
OH I knew there had to be some reasons not to do this. I have an appt in a week for SSI on my daughter but the last thing i want is to ruin her future with this.
me too, i just had a feeling
@@izabelacruz1157 i ended up cancelling the process. I felt a weight lifted upon doing so.
How is her future ruin especially if you use the money to build her future
@@ygbodybuilder3023 all im going to advise is look up the stipulations of collecting SSI on a child with autism.
@@ygbodybuilder3023 Right, I am missing something as well. Because it seems work history would make it difficult, regardless of if the person was previously on ssi or not.
I work with my son in his special needs class, unfortunately because recent changes at the school I worry I have to home school. This is my last option.
did you decide to home school? how is his schooling working out for you?
@Lori Stewart im no longer working at the school and with the current staff and philosophy we are waiting for the school year to end, then unenroll him from the school and prepare for a home school curriculum.
Is the parent Restricted from working because of the daughter on social security.
Do you have to keep receipts? I feel stressed because if they put the check in my bank account and I have my child support in there too how am I supposed to know if I am spending from my child support or ssi for my son? I was waiting to get a check in the mail for ssi for my son. I think that it is going to my bank account instead. Waiting to get my s statement in my email. Its confusing and a little stressful
Is it Tefra or SSI that you receive for your child?
Could you elaborate in how you managed. It would be very helpful for those of us starting with this process
What about adults
Hi, how much me( single parent) and I have 3 children family maximum benefits will be? I got 1271 per month now. Thank you
what is the 1271? and what state are you in?
Since covid, took 2 years for them to deny me.
I have a nonverbal, autistic 6 year old son. I attempted to get a disability benefit for him but was told that my income was too high. So, I went another route for his benefit later. I opened up a custodial brokerage account for him(3 years ago). I intended to deposit his full amount of disability benefits each month in to his brokerage account had he qualified. That way later in life he would not have to worry about income.
But you said you make too much money for your son to qualify for ssdi??? Your suggestion to open an custodian account is not helpful.
later on get can get a federal job using schedule "A".
I have a very important about my son who has high functioning autism ADHD irritable bowel syndrome anxiety in a little depression he has been getting SSI every since he's been 9 years old taste medication it just started going to his base School two years ago I fought for that he's very very smart with computers and phones he has an IEP at school he just turned 18 June 11th I have a few questions I would like to ask you are you still available to answer questions I see that this is a old video
did she ever respond to you?
If you have a child who qualifies for SSI when they turn 18 they must go through recertification process as an ADULT and most will NOT qualify then anyway. So just know parent what they don’t tell you and what she’s not saying is 8 times out of ten your child will lose SSI at 18. If they can be a greeter at Walmart then they don’t qualify
My daughter is non verbal and can't pay attention...would she qualify for ssi
@Ricky Jayster..Hello, Has your daughter been diagnosed with Autism or any other ailments by a physician? I know the process I am a breast Cancer Warrior. ☮️❤️
Take her to a pediatric neurologist to see if they think she has autism.
The good thing is they can work full time and the federal government not need to know.
It does not work that way my friend. That is called Fraud.
Until you tell them ur wife makes $5 more than limit.
My daughter with Down syndrome has zero benefits ..
The young adult can do volunteer work and see it they can handle it. No point in sacrificing almost 20 years of SS income. come on now.
