The audience also plays a factor. Gundam is and always has been a military show. Development of technology, warring factions, and how one faction always wants to develop better mobile suits (mechs) than the other. Hence, often time, the fun of the Gunpla (Gundam Plastic Model Kits) is how we build them up, the same way a manufacturer would.
It's a very romantic idea, but the reality is that it's a model that has been used since the 80s to produce figures at a very low cost with cheap plastic, which is usually found in most Chinese and Japanese gundams and buildable figures. This way they save on production and with the excuse that one can fix them oneself, which kind of justifies the cheap plastic so that it can be easily molded. But because of its cost, it is often excessive for what they really offer. I'm only talking about the standard and chibi versions. The elite and others are a separate topic and are already made for true collectors with very high costs and are usually larger for greater detail and options in their construction that a figure of 6 inches or less does not allow.
I like them both. I know a lot more about the Transformer mythology than Gundam. I started buying Gundam kits because I've always liked model kits and cool robots, but I'm basically a newb at the mythology. I feel like i spend mpre time building a particular kit than i do transforming a tf...so in a way the Gundam play value is higher...
Gundam is real robot that involves politics, love triangles, interpersonal relationships, not knowing pilots and hating them in battle then unknowingly mingling with them. Og transformers barely had a cohesive plot with a fanbase that loves gatekeeping other transformers franchise. I love them both and i have a massive collection of both gunpla and transformers
You gotta remember that Gundam also has a particular fanbase that loves to gatekeepe other Gundam fanbases, case in point the “UC Purist” that mirrors the Geewunner

@@Kaplayermxn in terms of anime outside of UC, i love 00, first season of IBO and parts of the second season, seed ms design but not really for the plot (same with wing). I can appreciate most timelines. But gunpla is freedom
Should've talked about Entry Grades, dude. They're the low-bar entry for Gundam builders/collectors that are as impressive as High Grades, which are bigger than Core Class figures (they're in kinda the same price range in Asia).
The real factor on whether you'll choose one over the other when it comes to Gundam and Transformers figures is where you lived. If you lived in Europe, US, or any Western countries, chance is you're better off collecting Transformers. Meanwhile if you lived in Asia, Gunplas are quite more affordable. Geography really affected the shipping price and could easily turn something that should've cost $7 to $16 🗿
Gundam is very easily accessible in the US actually. There's plenty of hobby shops that carry them and big name shops like Hobby Lobby and Target carry them as well. You can walk into any toy aisle and get transformers much easier, but Gundam is still pretty accessible here.
@@sanictheedgehog The thing is, unless they already have some sort of attachment to Gundam, people in the West would more likely buy Transformers figures.
As much as Gundam figures, Model kits and such look badass. I find myself more attached to the fun aesthetic of Robots that can change their physical form to whatever they see fit or whatever given reason
for me, get the kick of badass from third party figures, because those usually get some really cool looks, poseablity and more paint job than some retail. At the cost of being stupids expensive. Iron Factory is an example of this. Tho since I also like legos, gunpla has its own charm.
I have been a transformers fan for basically my entire life so as a franchise transformers is easily my favorite. But I've recently tried some gundam model kits and i find them to be really fun to build and I do enjoy their slicker designs more then a lot of my transformers figures so currently I've been enjoying collecting gundam more.
Gundam figures, as in figures, are normally geared towards well off collectors in japan (for ver anime, robot spirits, metal robot, metal build etc). The more recent line of "Universe" figures is more intended for the retail box store sort of appeal, more affordable but less accessories (but made up for with size). The models kits are more affordable and usually end up having better accessories, details and even articulation than normal gundam figures except of course for high end stuff. Just don't expect to be able to rough house them. Also shame about that Unicorn, you got a bad QC one with what looks like sun damage. Most of the Universe figures are actually pretty good for their price, though ultimately an HG is still la better deal. And I would argue a better bang for buck than a transformer :P I still love transformers though and im not nearly as hard on the new ones as other people are.
In my country, strangely normal gundam figures (not limited or collector editions) are way cheaper than normal transformers figures (mainline movie and studio series).
Oh boy, there’s about to be a war in the comments. As for me, a lifelong fan of transformers, and a huge Gundam fan of 6 years, I’d say neither is better than the other and both have their place. TF figures (strictly speaking from a mainline point of view) are mostly made for general audiences. They’re meant to be mass produced in an assembled manner and designed with play in mind. They’re much more solid and playable thanks to the glue, pins, and screws used throughout which also help facilitate complex transformations. Gundam figures on the other hand (strictly speaking from a model kit point of view) are designed to be built and displayed. The fact that they’re snap fit model kits built by the user makes them relatively fragile compared to pre assembled figures like TF. But they tend to have better articulation and much more detail compared to TF, especially at higher grades like MG, RG and PG. They’re also easy to customize and make your own. Transforming Gundam Kits do exist, but they tend to be more delicate compared to their non-transforming counterparts since they lack the pins, screws, and glue that help keep transformers figures together, but they make up for that with their insane engineering tricks and making no compromises. I’ve got a sizeable collection of both and I love them all.
As much as I like transformers, Gunpla has always appeal more to me. Building a robot is more fun honestly. And with Gunpla you can fix the joints easily enough compared to transformers at times. I would be lying if I say that Gunpla don't have their own issues (stability out of box, stickers and some being PBandai). What I will say is this, robots are cool regardless of what franchise
I've been into gunpla for years and as i kid a loved transformers, in particular beast wars. Recently i shifted to transformers due to lack of time for building and i love them
i just want to say.....the value is better with gundam model kits ONLY if you make a good purchase, because there are kits that arent great....but the new model kits from the new series are amaaazing
I like both, but Gundam has taken over for me instead of transformers. I was a big bionicle kid growing up and this feels like a natural evolution for me. I find the builds very satisfying. I still pay attention to the new releases for TF, but everything I want from TF I can get from gundams that I really enjoy building.
When it comes to model kits you also have to take into account customization esspecially within the same line. It’s easy to swap limbs and weapons even without going into paint or modification. I’m building one right now where instead of a kibble jet cockpit I’m cutting that peice up to combine with the main bodys arm as a big armed super mode.
I feel like unfair compare, Another one are kid toy built for a kid to play and collectable and another one are scale model built for adult collector and display. Modern TF should compare to modern machine robo line. And Gundam should compare to Frame Arm or Zoids or modelriod. Or TF model like Yolopark or Dmk vs PG gundam.
One thing I love about Gundam is that Bandai keeps re-printing old model kits. If you like the look of a kit from a decade or more ago, you can just set up a notification on your hobby shop's web page and sooner or later it'll be in stock again. With Transformers, once a toy's had its initial run it's just gone, and the only way you'll be able to get it is to track down a second-hand copy.
"That is more disturbing than the horrors that humanity is capable of" -shoves underwater nuclear blast -me, in anger at the missed opportunity for a colony drop
I don't like having to build every figure I like the look of, nor being unable to play much woth it when finished. So for overall, I go with Transformers as my main robot fix. I also have more attachment to the lore and worldbuilding there, where as I general hate most Gundam shows even when the designs are great. Honestly, it's just two different audiences. Apples to oranges.
I'm kinda leaning more towards Gundam. I just prefer it's storytelling over Transformers. It's much more consistent and instead of always appealing to younger folk, Gundam actually atempts to appeal to everyone and it works.
Bandai HG kits have advanced a lot since that strike freedom model kit, things like the skirt armor are always cut in half by most builders to allow it to move independently from the other side, we should compare the TWFM line to the newest releases, and also compare the price, with the aerial being only 1300 yen or $9 In the US it seems that everything related to shipping is expensive according to most collectors, but here in Mexico is cheaper to buy things from japan than buying them from a reseller, I paid something like 20-25 USD for my Full mechanics Aerial, and some robot spirits figures are even cheaper than that, if anything, to me it's more expensive to buy the basic transformers figures in a walmart than buying a gundam robot spirits or model kit figure from japan
I was just thinking the same of my 2 favorite toylines today. But in my case, I collect gundam model kits, therefore, Tfs and Gundams win in their own category in my world.
When it comes to fiction and lore, I prefer Transformers. In terms of toys, collectibles, and merchandise I prefer Gundam model kits because I like building things and the end result is incredible. That's why I enjoy building and collecting lego sets.

They weren't based on anything except a couple of artists' imagination in comparison to someone who has been in the animation business for a long time. Both universes are pretty big, and we can't denounce one to put up another. They are great in their own ways. Transformers are typically more expensive in the East than Gundam toys, which probably also plays into why Transformers aren't as popular as it is in the West.
