I use Gertrud Franck's method for my annual veg plot, came by an old copy of the book a couple of years ago. I'm surprised it's not better known: great to hear you endorse it.

Problem now with hay/grasses and manure made from hay/grasses is broad-leaf pyrolid herbicides. Unless you're growing corn and other grasses it kills most vegetables for at least a couple of seasons

this is actually a bit of a relief for me.

To find the book fast, google "Gertrud Franck soilandhealth" the last part as one word is the site that has the pdf format of the scanned book. I found it last year then looked for it for several months before finding it again a couple days ago. That book is so refreshing, and i'm glad to know that you champion that book. I would have suggested it to you if you didn't already know about it. It shows that readiness to listen to the plants and the determination to put things together in a self sufficient way leads people to the natural principals of earth care. It's an excellent place to start if you're into gardening, and you'll start questioning a lot of the cookiecut wisdom of what is called Gardening, but in reality is just part of a proxy engine designed less to create food than it is to electrolysis people from money.

Actually, Geoff, here in the States, Monsanto has begun recommending that wheat farmers Finnish the ripening cure process by spraying it with roundup. It's bullshit, but that's what they recommend.

yLeprechaun, yes... And there is a broad leaf weed spray that's "ok" for cattle to eat... So cow and horse poo are no longer safe! It can stay in the soil for as long as 3 years.... 😢

Good hot composting locks up the toxins to the carbon molecules and become long chain inert and stable.

This is still no too much and can be locked up in the decomposition cycles of hot compost, bonded to the carbon molecules as long chain complex and inert.

Yes the 3rd patent on glypho is as a dessicant so the crop is ready to harvest all at once also used in damp conditions it says so on the bread, eversince I learnt about this I've made my own bread, fresher and cheaper and hassle free with a good bread maker

Residual aminopyralid herbicide is the killer here for compost makers it takes 2 years of soil contact to go away it passes through the gut of the animals

I was very excited to throw together a quick and dirty mulch garden this year, based on a Bill Mollison video and one of yours. However, in the process, I have learned the hard way that basically 100% of US hay is now sprayed with broad leaf herbicide. Found this out after putting in a small garden. We then looked for an organic source and found that there is none here. We went to leaf mulch for the rest, which is abundant here. I hate that the Ruth Stout -type growing method that Mollison taught as being the "quick and easy way" to establish a garden basically doesn't work here anymore with any commercially available product.
I talked to an old-timer about what they did before this spray, and he said that farmers used to remove the weeds with an earlier 1st-cut, which was known to have more weeds. The later "cuts" were sold at a premium, because they were weed-free. Now ALL hay here is sprayed by default throughout the season, and the market basically forces it. Horse manure is also basically considered tainted by organic farmers for the same reason, even for composting. Maybe they're doing a cooler, more passive method of composting?

Hi Matt the decomposition process locks up all toxins even radio-actives over time, this what is cleaning up Chenoble after the reactor melt down in the Ukraine and after the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan. The compost sopeeds up the biological processes of nature and bonds these minor volumes of toxins to the carbon molecules creating long chain complex but inert molecules that are safe.

Matt you should talk to more farmers. I live in upstate New York and only a few farms around here spray herbicides. They also do first cut in the hay fields. Surely there must be some farms in your area that do not spray herbicides that would sell you some square bails or round bails.
