  • Henry VIII was once described as the 'Best Dressed Sovereign in the World'. In Tudor times, there were laws which governed who could wear what colours, fabrics and furs. Only the King could wear purple, sable fur or cloth of gold. Henry VIII adorned himself with lots of jewellery with clothes inlaid with jewels, including a diamond that was described as 'the largest walnut you ever saw.'
See Henry VIII being dressed by the Gentlemen of the Privy Chamber.
This clip was made as part of HISTORY's Henry Week which featured the premieres of two new shows: Inside The Body of Henry VIII; and Inside The World of Henry VIII.

This was a really good video. So many (including myself) pay attention to what the queens wore, but the king's wardrobe is equally fascinating! Thnx

Henry lavished ALL his queens with fine clothing. He would LOVE going to the mall and buying our modern fashions for them.

@anasnaknota Actually it wasn't as warm as you'd think. We were going through a mini-ice age at the time. The temperatures were 15 to 20 degrees cooler than what we consider normal today.
AND... that's why they wore linen undergarments (long shirts/possibly bloomers). Any body sweat and body oil seeped into the linen rather than the clothes, therefore preserving the outer garments.

@Darthbelal I make the Tudor ladies gown and yes its a chore to go to the bathroom, let alone get into a bathroom stall with a wide skirt on. Though you don't get chilly, which is good because I am always cold. Guess I have the perfect body temperature for it all.

Love ❤️ 😍 😊 this. I watch it all the time. I mean the clothes he wore were truly magnificent. But what exactly did Henry VIII 🤔 wore when he came to the throne of England 🇬🇧 in 1509 when he was young, when he was in his youth 🤔 I wish someone would post that.

I've always been intrigued about Henry's clothes final destiny. I've read here and there that sadly none of his original clothes survived the time, yet I wonder whether this is totally true, I find it hard to believe though, given the so extensive wardrobe he enjoyed in life. I've never come across any king's clothes exhibit, I would really love to.

He left his country in a DIRE FINANCIAL MESS. 2 generations later they were gone. Louis xiv was an egomaniacal fuckup. Taking his court out of Paris and away from the heart of the people was one of the dumbest moves any king could ever make. He and the aristocracy lived in a fantasy bubble and his heirs had no idea wtf was actually going on down on the ground until the peasants marched on Versailles in 1789. Think of how dumb it would be for the British royals to abandon London and go live in their own private fairytale, well, that is what Louis did. He was a dumbass.

Wearing clothes that were legal only for the king would have gotten you charged with treason. The reason is that in that time, taking royal privileges was a clear statement (think flashing neon sign) that you thought you should be king. Publicly wearing kingly garments meant that you had, or were trying to gain, the support of the people in your bid to replace the king. At that time, courtiers, nobles and rich commoners at the kings court, would try to suck up to the king by imitating him or favoring things he liked, but had to be careful that their imitation didn’t mock the king or bring suspicion that they were trying to usurp the king.
Because Henry VIII kept flipping religions every time he got remarried and would persecute people on the wrong side, he had a lot of enemies, more than kings usually do. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was known for fits of rage and paranoia, including physically attacking friends and staff. Any act that could possibly be seen as treasonous, even when ridiculously stretched, could incite the wrath of the king and result in torture and/or execution.
So to answer your question, yes the fashion police really would throw you in jail.

In his youth he was the handsomest most erudite king in Europe, and the most friendly and openhanded. His councilors had to stop him giving away gifts, titles, lands and money so freely and granting any favors asked. His first few years were a golden age, but that all changed later.
