Nice and simple, of course the legwork of connecting to asterisk is done by a telephony card/ATA, which may not come cheap(40-50 can. bucks for a new one port ATA).
I would not use an ATA for an alarm system, I would get a small analog card like the TDM400P, if that's the goal. You can get those pretty cheaply on eBay from time to time. If you do use an ATA, something like a Grandstream HT 8xx is a decent choice for an ATA in general. However, I would not personally use an ATA for any important workloads like this.
