    Timeline-
In 1775 the Tall Ship Providence was commissioned into the Continental Navy as one of the very first vessels enlisted in the quest for the new nations independence from England.
Being sloop rigged, she was 65 feet long at her waterline, carried 12 4-lb. cannons on her deck and was outfitted for a complement of 54, including crew and marines.
She sailed from the Bahamas all the way up the Eastern coast to Canada while destroying enemy vessels and obtaining vital cargo that could be used in the war effort.
In 1776, she landed the first contingent of US Marines, to do battle at Nassau, the Bahamas.
In 1779 she was burned by her own crew to avoid capture during an unsuccessful expedition to Maine.
Today's Providence was built in 1976 to celebrate the Naval Heritage of the War of Independence. She served in many capacities as a living tribute to our country's maritime history.
In 1972 she became the official sailing vessel of Providence, Rhode Island.
In 2015, she was extensively damaged by a winter blizzard both above and below deck. It was questioned if she would ever be seaworthy again!
In 2017, she was then purchased by the Tall Ship Providence Foundation, who was committed to restoring her to her former glory!
She traveled to Gloucester, Massachusetts under her own power for repairs to her hull, and then will move on to Bath, Maine for the complete restoration.
When her restoration is complete, she will sail to Alexandria, Virginia and will become a sailing classroom and an important feature on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria.
