1:58:02 still one of my favorite throws ever from Elway

60+ yards, across the field, and it somehow actually traveled fast.

Never seen this live. Only highlights. Can’t wait to see this throw.

@@lzv6990: That was key. It's not just that he threw it a long way - a lot of QBs can do that. But he got it there on a line. If that ball hangs up in the air, it gets broken up or picked. From an old Sports Illustrated story about Elway:
"He routinely throws across the field, making the one pass
quarterbacks are taught never to try. Elway does it from one
sideline to the other and from one 20-yard line to the other.
It's a wonderful way to run up your interception total, but not
only have the Denver coaches not told him to stop, they also
once put such a pass in their playbook--scramble right, turn
suddenly and throw 40 yards downfield and 40 cross-field.
"Sometimes in practice that play would come up on one of my
snaps," says Elway's old backup Gary Kubiak, now the Broncos'
offensive coordinator. "I'd always pretend to slip just before I
threw. What could I do? I mean, nobody else in the world can
      make that throw.""
These days, I suspect that Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers might have the combination of mobility and arm strength to make that throw, but I doubt anyone else can. It's a pretty small, pretty elite group in history that could make a throw like that.

Yeah there might be one or two other qb that can make that pass. But Elway can also move to his left and throw across to the right against his body like he did against the giants in the super bowl. Now try to name a qb that can do that.

Remember this is 1991, his arm in the 80s was even deadlier. He was throwing 40 yard rockets. Probably the highest peak a human arm can get.

Brian Richard - Not a Chiefs fan , but the other team featured ... yet I will readily admit that Deron Cherry , Albert Lewis, and Kevin Ross in your secondary was very good.
I’m glad these DBs ( on both sides w/ Denver’s Safety’s ) got to play their career in a time when the NFL hadn’t castrated the position.
Around this same time , SD w/ Gill Byrd & a young Rodney Harrison also had some good skill. Byrd and Cherry kind of reminded me of each other at the time.

@@zenoftupac9096 I am a fan of both Dennis Smith and Steve Atwater. I have been collecting autographed football cards of them both since I was a kid. It was great to see Atwater get elected to the hall of fame in 2020.

KC much like Denver was really cursed w/ substandard WR talent during this timeframe ( all thru 80s into 90s ).
I know KC had Stephone Paige who had his stretches , but in the end only one 1000 yd season.
Denver has Vance & Mark Jackson , quality players who eventually compiled good career highlight reels .... but none of these guys were All Pro types like were needed.
Too many JJ Birden, Willie Davis, Emile Harry, & Robb Thomas type talents being counted on re: KCs side.
Too many Ricky Nattiel , Arthur Marshall, Derek Russell , and Michael Young types on Denver’s side.
All guys who should be on team and see time plus opportunities, but the cumulative number of “Starts” ( top 2 WRs ) amongst that group of 8 is way too high

Cutler had a stronger arm than Elway, when Elway was 50 years old. Wish more people called Cutler on that BS.

    • @zenoftupac9096
      @zenoftupac9096 4 роки тому +1

cesar geronimo - Cutler had a good arm , but at the end of the day ( even that literal day ) no one thought he had much of a chance of being in the same Zip Code as Elway then or when it was all said & done.
Speaking of Arms , in practice Kyle Boller used to get down on his knees at his own 30 yd Line & throw the ball thru the uprights on the opposite side of the field.
Crazy to see it & a very cool carnival trick , but essentially useless past that.
Idk if JaMarcus Russell had any kind of similar “look at me” displays in his practice/pregame routine , but that’s another guy that could throw the ball 90 yards on a rope ... made him a lot of money but that’s it.
His college highlights are kinda fun to watch as he is able to show off his seemingly unreal raw skills vs Defenses comprised of 1 or 2 solid pros and a bunch of camp fodder , CFL talent , and future PE teachers ( SEC after all ). Even in college it was “if” he was motivated that day.
It must have been very frustrating for Raider fans ... the “Woulda Coulda - What If” factor.

@@zenoftupac9096 The biggest woulda coulda for Raider fans was if Elway became a Raider. Rozelle blocked the trade out of spite to Al Davis.
