  • USS Yorktown was at the time sailing with Task Force 58 and launching raids against Japanese airfields on Kyushu, Honshu, and Shikoku with the aim of suppressing the airborne response to the invasion of Okinawa scheduled for April 1st 1945.
    During the attacks on March 18th and 19th, the American naval aviators claimed to have destroyed 223 Japanese aircraft in the air and 250 on the ground, while the Japanese placed their losses as 161 of the 191 aircraft they committed in the air and an unspecified number on the ground.
    At 0:15 an unfortunate single-engined trainer appears to have been caught airborne by the attacking forces.

    On a somewhat related note I lived on Okinawa for two years and did a lot of battle site touring of my own. A lot of the damage is still visible. Place the Japanese were held out still have impacts from bullets and bombs. Some of the caves even still have soot from flame throwers or you can tell they were blown in. One guy even had the barrel of an AA Gun as a fence post in his yard. Even today they’re still digging up UXO and finding rusted equipment. Thanks for sharing all these videos. We all look forward for more to come.

    No fires in any of those planes strafed on the ground. Don't appear to have any fuel in their tanks.

    Japanese army still had many planes in 1945. However, there were few pilots and fuel, so only option was to Kamikaze attack.

    • @ppainterco
      @ppainterco 2 роки тому +5

      Spot on. The US subs operating in the South a China Sea had choked any fuel and food supplies coming from Dutch East Indies/Indonesia. 50% of Japanese civilian sailors had died during the war. It was so bad that merchant shipping didn’t even want to leave port to risk being sunk. By March 1945, the flow of fuel and food had ceased. The US sub fleet and aerial attacks on shipping had sunk about 8.5 million tons of Japanese shipping capacity, and Japan had only rebuilt 2.5 million tons to replace it. By August 1945, the Japanese were in pretty sorry shape with regard to food and fuel.

      @@chpman2013 It does not look like a Val because:
      1) It does not have the characteristical dorsal "fin" connected to the tail.
      2) Wings don't have the characteristical markedly elliptical shape
      3) It looks slightly smaller than the overtaking Hellcat, while the Val was actually bigger than an F6F (Ki-51 is instead smaller).
      4) It does not have the wheel cover (usually removed for Ki-51, but always in place for D3A Val).
      5) The only large airbase in Kyushu (like the one in the footage) was an Army base, so it's unlikely the presence of Navy plane
      However, the latter two points could be debatable.

    Reason there are so many Japanese planes is that there was some problem with B29 bombing from high altitudes. This is because world's fastest jet stream exists over Japan. So Japan's major fighter factories were operating until near end of ww2. (Many of B29 bombings were off target).🙄

    • @bkjeong4302
      @bkjeong4302 2 роки тому +4

      Though the same bombing raids meant poor access to resources, meaning that a lot of late-war Japanese fighter designs (which actually included some quite potent fighters) were held back by lack of access to raw materials. Plus, by this point Japan had run out of pilots.

      That's why they switched to low altitude firebombing of cities with industrial assets. That killed more people than the A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

    Comparing this with ETO guncam, it looks like the Navy favored much higher altitude with a steeper dive on target when strafing compared to the USAAF method of getting in the weeds to avoid the flak.

    Shows the problem most fighter pilots encountered…… shooting from a distance beyond the harmonisation point of the guns. The bullets are crossing paths and the streams are actually getting wider and less effective. That is one of the things that separated the average fighter pilot from the best and most effective fighter pilots. Also, hitting airborne targets and ground attack would be two very different tasks I would think.
