- 1 week in, figured its time to talk about it. I cycle through all the wavetables, and put the sequencer to good use; Bass, and more Bass. Plus some Bass.
- Caution. - very light profanity (2 occasions). I include this warning out of respect for viewers that may have kids (I often do) within earshot.
Brilliant video dude
I can really identify with your purchase story. I wasn't super excited about getting one either but I bought it from a store with a good return policy so it was no risk. WOW, I have to say it's so much better in person. The sounds are awesome, the UI is easy to work with, and it never feels limiting. Even the factory presets are outstanding. There are so many useful sounds inside this magical box.
I had a Matrixbrute for a long time and I tried so hard to love it. The physical UI was so good, it's still my favorite hardware, but the sounds just weren't what I wanted. I finally admitted to myself that I didn't love it and sold it. The Pro 3 is really delivering on the sound that I had always wanted from the Matrixbrute.
Agreed. I think the Arturia (Matrix and Poly) sound relatively ‘weak sauce’, actually …
You're right, that's a great unique and interesting sounding wavetable. Can't wait to program sequences with the Pro3 and automate parameters. I think this is one of the best sounding mono synths currently. Sequential knocked it out of the park with this one.
absolutely amazing synth 👍👍 nice personal review, great job 👏👏🤗
Nice walkthrough...thanks for clarifying some things. Got your patches as well, I bow to you! Loving the Pro 3(SE)...it was a hard decision choosing between (like others) the Matriach, Matrix brute and also the Hydra. Matriach is wonderful but it's too much modular...no patch saving. Pro 3 and Brute were very similar, prob the brand won it. And at this end also still interested some day in the Hydra module. Now back to the deep dive in the Pro 3, I am not done yet for a long time...definitely a keeper.
I love it. Especially since most of the presets are actually good. I wound up ditching half the presets in the Summit and other synths right off the bat. But the Pro 3 not only has great presets, but usable and there's an individualized sequence for each. It is loud too. I have to keep the volume at almost nothing. Also love the tuned feedback. My only criticisms are that it would be amazing to be able to run the filters in parallel and that you can't play in paraphonic mode while a sequence is running. It would be awesome to play a lead over a bass line running using different oscillators.
I hope Sequential does a poly synth with this VCO/Wavetable architecture...preferably with two VCOs and two Wavetable oscillators
Well James, seems like you're smitten with the Pro 3. I've had my serious eye on it a while - wanted either this or a Hydrasynth and got the latter for it's gritty and dirty sound and all-roundedness, but the Pro 3 seems like it can produce particularly dirty gritty bass sounds on another level, and classic lo-fi analogue sounds.
Can't wait to hear your take on the Udo Super 6 too - it sounds so warm and beautiful. I know it's wrong to compare all these things as all different in their own right, but would love to hear your take on all the sonic differences and overlaps between your most recent synths - Summit, Hydrasynth, Udo Super 8, Pro 3. It would definitely help someone like me for the next purchase, especially as it's so difficult now to go to a store and have a play on each one.
Was looking at a Prophet 6 or OB6 but this is less expensive, sounds amazing and can manage modular gear via CV so a win.
A number of individual waveforms might not be pleasant sounding in a Hydrasynth when you use the as a standalone waveform, but a lot are there to be used as a modifier / mutant for other waveforms. And when you see how they are created, they actually makes sense, eg a sort of ragged sine wave.
I would probably never buy a mono synths myself, but that's because I have no idea how to play them. Love the big sound they produce, though.
As always, nice vid.
***Edit*** I already posted my bits, when I heard you say a Super 6 is on the way. NICE!
Awesome I’m waiting for my pro 3 to arrive tomorrow. Also really like your banks. Make a bank for the pro 3 with some tasty stereo basses please!
In Progress. ;)
@@MajorOSC Did you finish these banks?
@@jameswhiting987 the pro 3 one is free at majorosc.com
I’ve been checking-out various mono-synths over the last few year, and other than my inexpensive ‘Poly D’, I find the ‘Pro 3’ is a much more advanced mono-synth, compared to all others of similar price. It has all the functionality that I expect in a modern-day hardware synth of its price and caliber. Otherwise, I can’t justify spending that kind of money for a high-end Moog, or the MatrixBrute, when most of my other synths can achieve the same basic sounds (for my taste).
I am struggling to keep the Matriarch or sell it. Its a really nice sounding synth, but the Pro 3 does so much and actually has patch memory.
@@nickyates9820 Both are awesome. 🥰🥰
Nice desk.
Have you ever tried the Elektron Four MkII ? If so, do you have any option on both ?
Just got mine yesterday
I’ve been wanting to hear the wavetable portion of this synth, and now that I have…it kinda makes up my mind about the synth. I actually want it purely FOR the wavetable section. Other than the EVOLVER, and maybe something from Waldorf, nothing else sounds as good to me, especially with the modulation possibilities.
Save your $$$ for a while longer...
@@MajorOSC ??
@@MajorOSC yeah why save your $$ for a while longer?
I own the Pro 3 too...
@@MajorOSC I’m guessing you were hinting at the 3rd Wave … ?
Probably a stupid question, but for someone who's just starting to play around with wavetables, I was wondering why there aren't seamless loops in the wavetables that you were demonstrating? Is this because you have to do that within the patch or is it a limitation? Thanks.
I'm not sure what you mean by seamless loop. Whether or not it's seamless is a bit redundant too considering the very nature of wave tables and the fact that they progress and change. If you want something that returns to form you'd be wanting to use a bipolar LFO modulating the waveform from center point and jumping from farthest left to farthest right. Another way of doing this would be simply to ensure you're using a wave table that ends in the same way form as it begins. But whether or not this is the case will of course depend on whatever wave table you select. Since they're not editable yet in the pro 3 the first method with bipolar lfo would probably be the closest thing to producing what you might consider to be a seem less loop. That's Assuming I've understood your inquiry. Whether it goes linear and resets or shifts back and forth, you'll end up with similar wobbling or pulsing characteristics. This tends to work well either in a triggered and controlled manner for poly rhythms, or free running and slow to inject a shifting, morphing type of sound. For the free running ones, you could go one step further by assigning velocity to lfo depth, and run the lfo at or near 0 depth. Dynamic keys strikes will produce different amounts of wavetable progression.
Yes I understand those techniques you're talking about - I do come from a strong sampling background but just haven't been working with wavetables or single cycle waveforms. I just noticed that the ones you were demonstrating were "pulsing" and like you say that can be used as part of the rhythmic structure of the sound. So I assume that the Pro 3 can give you seamless wavetable oscillators either by having your wavetable loop before importing or by using one of the techniques you mentioned.
DO NOT GET the Matrixbrute - compared to the PRO3. No comparison.
HELLO ! thanks for you review - For you, is the novation summit/Peak as powerful as Pro3 (sound and matrix modulation) ?
can't really compare a mono to a poly. way too different from one another. both have tons of sound design potential.
@@MajorOSC ok thank you!
Sub 37 is deep pro 3 is soft low end
no EQ required to boost Sub37
Dave smith is better for pads and leads
@Richard Snell I'll second your opinion on the Pro 3!
“soft low end”?! 😂
Too expensive for a mono
Having spent $3500 for a Minimoog Model D when the reissues were still available, I’ll say no it isn’t.
Too expensive for YOUR mono, maybe
