Literally just opening some Play Boosters from MKM

- I plan to showoff a prerelease kit in the near future but before I do that, I need to test my setup, so enjoy the ride as I open some of the new play boosters from Murders at Karlov Manor and figure out how this all works.

yes please do the prerelease opening! I really like your commentary on the cards themselves as you opened the packs. Something you dont see many do.
The art on the back of the the tokens is a part of the whole ARG they’re doing for the set, so it’s not actually art from any of the cards from the set.
Hey Ryan, a darker background will have a better focus, typically. White backgrounds only work well if the card is flat on the mat from what I have found.

im between buying cards currently, seeing you open stuff is amazing! focus on the camera was not good, but I listen to you read at the same time hehehee
I got a Massacre Girl Known Killer, put her in my Ghoulcaller Gisa Commander deck.
I got one to put in my hapatra, vizier of poisons deck 😊 massacre girl is going to become very popular I think.
I have seen people reference the lightning helix top deck a decent amount with the reprint. It is a major part of my gameplay philosophy because the play is char the face and knock the top of the deck.

The "Clue-Art" tokens are a 6(?) card panorama for each of the different art versions. 4:10
They link up with yet another minigame-clue mystery thingie, which this set is filled to the brim with (from foils having new symbols, colours being shifted on certain cards, prerelease kits having a ransomnote with different boxes and divers giving you the clues etc etc)
Sidenote, I think putting a "locked" focus and a playmat/darker underground works better
Your point at 11:20 is so right, and is why the rot farm mortipede might look decent, but it's just a filler in the end. It does not enable itself, meaning you have to use it in a parasitic way, and its effect isn't "permanently" affecting the board. Evidence examiner gives a token to be used whenever however, but mortipede gives a nice "combattrick" boost that fizzles at the end of the turn. Compound that with if you "collect evidence" and remove 3 creatures from the graveyard for a cost, you only trigger it once aswell.
There are non-evidence collecting ways to enable mortipede though. If I was set on including it in the deck, I'd support it with cards like Leering Onlooker or Rubblebelt Maverick. Mortipede's "fail case" is still a 3/4 that can block 2/2 detective tokens and 2/2 facedowns quite well, so I think I'd be ok playing it in my sealed pool (but I admit I probably wouldn't take it highly in a draft)
1:35 eeey got that on MTGA the other day,i play azorius deck well mostly white with angels and flyers but added that in :P
I actually dont mind the tonal mess of the cards/story/art but the 'meh' of so many of the Rares killed me this set. I remember opening my first pre-release pack to find.. the bone brute. (and then, only 10 more black cards in 6 packs)
Man, I love Ravnica (OG Rav was the first set I really got deep into) but this set feels odd. I can't remember if it was here or SBMTG, but one of them said it almost felt more like it was originally set on New Capenna.

Rot Farm Mortipede is not a good limited card.
I have heard people complain that the theme Detective set is followed by the theme Cowboy set.
The full-art lands look good in this set. Kind of suspicious they look exactly like the New Capenna lands, and this set should be set of New Capenna.
Awesome to hear you love gorgons as well. Have you ever watched the classic Hammer film The Gorgon(1964)? If not you should check it out!
As for play boosters, I’m not a fan and it’s completely turned me off from playing paper magic(I’m mostly a limited player).
I have not seen that but I will add it to my list - I'm trying to watch 52 new movies this year, so this sounds perfect!
The cost of this set is too high for the cards, but some of the flavor was well thought out.
Play boosters suck. I'll try them out when thunder junction comes out, but otherwise, if I don't like opening those packs. I'm done opening packs.
Do you think it's possible they made this crap on purpose to push for more collector booster sales?
I don't think it was to push collector boosters so much as to save face with local game stores. They complained about having to stock draft, set, and collector for multiple sets and it was just taking up too much space on shelves. Play boosters were meant to simplify things for overworked store owners, but we'll have to wait and see if the lower sales of MKM affects their feelings on things going forward.
Magic always had puns and fun cards and magic always had epic fantasy stuff. I think you're filtering through nostalgia goggles; you just don't remember the silly cards you didn't like from the past.
If you want to do a sanity check, just go over some old sets (not just the well known cards, but the random commons and forgotten rares/uncommons). If you're honest, you'll notice that many things you complain about have always been there.
I'm sure there have been SOME cards like that, but with MKM it seems they have reached a critical mass and have affected the overall tone of the set. WotC even seems to know this, because in their most recent player survey, one of the questions pointedly asked if we thought the art and flavor of MKM had a different look and feel than other recent sets. So I think they're trying to gauge where the line actually is (and hopefully they dial it back in future sets)
i went to pre-release but was very unlucky cuz i could not get a day off from work and had to leave early
only played a little bit almost none at all,i was gotta play at least a fully round but i got bye first round,we were 9...
cool new set tho,don't rly play with cards from it,did not buy any of the precon decks tho
But i do enjoy now for a few months now going to my local store The Guild Hall at Friday Night Magic,great comunity,made some awesome friends there
