I have over 20 synthesizers from well-known manufacturers with the most diverse sound synthesis, but the Modal Cobalt 5S Extended Virtual Analog Synthesizer is completely unique. Especially the warm and expressive pad sounds are more than impressive. And I like the arpeggiator. All in all I can warmly recommend the Modal Cobalt 5S. It's a synthesizer that's fun to play with and sounds sensationally good.
"I'm always amazed at what people leave out", as I sit glaring at my jdxi, with its lovely sounds and SINGLE ADSR KNOB, which threatens to jack up all the envelope settings in my multi-layer tone, if I look at it funny. Yea, I'm amazed what they leave out too sometimes (but sometimes it's done right, so yay for that).
Great demo, Cobalt5S still have capability and value compared to Cobalt8/8M. I was considered buy a Cobalt8 or a Hydrasynth for VA sound, now Cobalt is the choice.
Ordered one. I'm totally new to synths and want to try one. Add to that, I been at a hunt for a Midi controller. And this seems to cover both of those needs. In addition to that having something mobile that do produce sounds stand alone is a HUGE plus for me, I do not want to be attached to the computer all the time. Only thing I really would loved is if it was battery powered too. A bit sad that no distortion is in the FX chain, but I can add that in my sampler, so I don't think it's a huge deal. Really hope this is the device I been searching for. Now hope DHL is fast with delivery :D
I bought this synth and I love the light you all shed on the depth of this instrument. Question, The wooden rack that your gear is sitting on, where did you get that?
I´m really interested to know how the Keybed compares to Arturia KeyStep models (that I have and like). I loved to have a small Synth and a MIDI controller on the same package. But Keybed is very important to me (the feeling, travel, implementation.
I have the wavestate, mininova, minilog xd, waldorf blofeld modular, microkorg, yamaha cs, korg microsampler, korg microstation and the 49 key hydrasynth. Do I need this?? Thinking about it.
Please modal, give firmware update for cobalt 5s as well! Not as much as cobalt 8 but still give some feature to cobalt5S as well! Cobalt5s is still cobalt series...
How do you TURN OFF the arp sequence at mark 34? STILL trying to figure out how to do actual REALTIME RECORD. Manual is no help. Neither is this video.
As someone who plans to eventually hit the road for live shows, the introduction of this, for me, was great timing. The capabilities for its size is massive. I have an Argon8 which I love dearly, but the thought of taking it to shows in the future does have me hesitant since I would die if something happened to it lol. I definitely agree with points made about workflow. Having access to a lot parameters on the main panel has been so helpful with me learning synthesis and just "getting it". Overall, this was such a great interview for more insight on this synth and its backstory from its creators.
Just by this guy’s attitude toward his fellow staff in his opening bit, I’m sold on this. Luckily it sounds amazing too!
Yes, very telling, in a good way.
I’m impressed by his sincerity as well.

Not only do Modal synths sound great. But the build quality is outstanding.
Got one because of this demo. Great banter too! Loving it.
Thank you so much Eric! Hope you're enjoying it 🎹✨
I got one and I love it! I really like the keyboard bed!
Looks like a really fun bit of kit!
After watching this video, am soo glad I decided on purchasing this
Much fun to be had

Just ordered one. Should be here in 2 days. Can't wait!
Wonderful video!
I like that motion recorder. The Roland jp8080 had that in 1996. Surprised more synths don't have it to be honest!

Phillip is a great presenter. I didn't know he was co-founder of Modal
Good interview! This synth is very very capable, the patch from scratch only glance little bit on the surface of what you can do

Thank You M.E. Super Crew
Sounds great, looks beautiful. Simple to use......i want one.

Nice bloke and nice little synth, It might be my fist synth to join the Akai Force.
That will be a very fine combo. Hope it goes well if you take the plunge!
Got the argon 8 and cobalts 5s. I wish the 5s had the joystick like the 8 does but not a big deal breaker
How do they compare, I am on the border for both synths

Our resident artist Mairk went for this because of portability when playing live.

qualty and depth of aft touch... is same as keystep,,, yes

Por fora parece um tecladinho de sorvete seco, lol, por dentro tem muitas lendas!
Pocket Jupiter and Juno flavors
have bought one for my son, will stop him hogging my take 5. He is 9 years old and mad about Kraftwerk , Gareth Emery and a few others.
too much talk,, 1 percent showing sound... cobalt is sad
Sorry Cobalt! Yes it was more of a discussion than sound demo this one!

Thank you for this and good luck on your plans to play live!
Low polyphony digital synths make no sense to me.
Only 8 voice polyphonic- no thanks.
Can can the step resolution be changed also with the sequencers like the division with the arp?
which keybed does it have ?
