Greensboro Airport - Piedmont Triad International - GSO

- In this video, let's explore my home airport. As the unofficial UA-camr of Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO), I consider myself qualified to take you on a tour of the facility.
Greensboro is part of the Piedmont Triad which includes the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point.
Our airport’s code is GSO, but it’s called PTI or Piedmont Triad International Airport to reflect its central location in between these three cities. A lot of people just call it the Greensboro Airport. It’s admittedly confusing and even inspired an attempted name change a few years back that didn’t take. It was to be called North Carolina Central International Airport. Turned out that was even more confusing, so it’s still GSO a/k/a PTI.
Would you believe more than 6,000 people work on the campus! There's a lot more to Piedmont Triad International Airport - and pretty much any airport - than ticket counters, gates, and jetbridges. Airports are micro-communities with all kinds of interesting things going on.
This video explores a bit of what's going on at Piedmont Triad International.

Like Jeb, it’s my hometown airport and whenever possible it’s my first choice!
I only fly out and in of Greensboro, its just such a small and easy airport, ( Plus not gonna lie i love smaller planes, specially the ERJ175)
I used to be a member of the Piedmont lounge - when it was US Air. In 1989 I moved to Greensboro from London, England because EMI Music wanted me to work on a new project there for Capitol Records. It was a bit of a change! I lived on Tattershall Drive, part of The Cardinal, an estate surrounding a Golf Course about 5 minutes from the Airport.
In fact my neighbour was Greensboro's Police Chief. He used to joke that I was then the only Englishman living in Guilford County.
US Air had one International flight per day from Charlotte to London and I think I used that about 35 times in the first year. I clocked up so many miles that I never needed to actually buy a ticket to visit my girlfriend in New York City during the six years that I lived there. If I couldn't hook up via Charlotte then I caught a connector US Air flight to Philly and British Airways - US Air were trying to get close to BA at that time. I remember when the connector was late in leaving GSO the pilot arranged for me to transfer to the BA 747 across the tarmac at Philly via an electric car; that was an experience!!! I always got great service..... Flying to LA I went via Dallas to Burbank so I could get to the Capitol Tower on Hollywood and Vine easily - though I did know the shortcuts from LAX via La Cienega Blvd. Good times.
Best, Pete.
Haha thanks for the mini-shoutout at 0:29 Jeb! Love PTI...just wish they had more service :/
I have flown through this airport dozens of times and have never known how much really goes on there. Great content!
I live about 12 minutes from GSO, I often see approach into airport. You forgot to mention GTTC’s aviation campus, they do aviation maintenance, flight training and many other programs related to it. The Vice Presidents plane and AF1 “Venus one” does touch and goes every once in a while. The school GTCC
does partner up with local companies. I’ve done that same INT trip too!! Great video and loved it, I know GSO, CLT and RDU pretty well.
Greensboro airport is just so peaceful when I fly
My home airport is John Wayne Orange County KSNA, big airlines like Delta, American, and United fly there too! Longest runway is 5,000 feet, it’s my favorite airport!
ONT is my home airport! I thought it’s always been a neat airport even though the city of LA took them over for a time. I’m glad that the city of Ontario regained control because they will make ONT a great place that people will want to travel from again!
I used to use Ontario back in the day. It is a nice airport I agree.
Ontario Intl is my favorite by far !
ONT is also my home! Super excited with all the expansion going on there and couldn’t be prouder about it being the US’s fastest growing airport!
Heeeyy mine too! Desk to gate no more than 15 min, at least in Southwest terminal. Also gotta love Oakland Intl
I agree ONT is pretty awesome! My model airport is based of of it and last month I went Planespotting there before Christmas!
I love plane spotting at GSO the people that work there are really nice allowing me to do that. Great Video Jeb for exposing GSO for how amazing the airport truly is. I agree GSO was truly over due for a new control tower.
Man I love how modern the terminal/check-in area at GSO is! Much nicer than those at ORD that's for sure. Becoming an unofficial spokesperson for my hometown airport would be nice...if we got more than just American ERJ-145's!
woah bro i didnt expect to see u here in the comments
I live in Raleigh, You should make a video at RDU!
I second this!
If I still worked there would’ve tried to give him a tour of the ops, maybe someday!
squad
That Southwest video that he did he flew out of RDU, but it was the small "Regional type" terminal 1
My home airport is RIC Richmond International its like GSO
Great airport. Cant wait until the expansion is done
allmightygriff yes also I can't wait for the new terminal!
I have been to RIC, lovely little airport.
RIC is also my "hometown" airport. I like what they've done with the terminal building, and parking garages, over the past several years. I'll be happy when they complete the expansion of the A concourse, and the addition of new gates to the facility.
@@jamesboardman8859 I agree, nice Operation
They have there and I will look at the expansion.
Great to see so much business going on on a rather small airport. My hometown airport (Groningen airport, The Netherlands) is way smaller and currently it only has charter operations to holiday destination around the Mediterranean Sea. I’d love to see regular (feeder) flights to destinations like London, Paris, Copenhagen or Munich from my little hometown airport:)
John F Kennedy International Airport KJFK.
Your video makes me want to fly out of GSO, but I have never done it because I always use RDU. Maybe I should give GSO a try!
I call DEN! I just need some kind of sponsor to get me on more flights haha
Flown in and out of GSO a handful of times, usually connecting through CLT, always loved how late I could turn up to a flight without having to worry about security times being super long and a very short walk to the gate.
Always wondered about it’s cargo operations, so cool to see! 🇬🇧🇺🇸
This channel is hands down amazing. I see, I click. Love your content
It’s so cool seeing a youtuber like you showing off my home town airport!
Same lol!
My home town airport is...
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport!
Lol
@@noahcaswell4117 Same.
Mine is Newark liberty International airprot
same
Might just have to claim Denver haha
My favourite and home airport is Bremen ;-) (BRE, northern Germany)
Which is the home of the Bremen Town Musicians (you maybe know the fairy tale) - the town, not the airport...
So the PTI IATO belongs to Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia which doesn't seem to have an airport beyond a microlight training school
If you like podcasts... check out the "Opposing Bases" podcast about air traffic control. Hosts AG and RH are from GSO! Of course they call it "Triad" to protect the innocent, but it's a great show to learn about ATC. They might even be able to arrange a tour of the tower and RADAR rooms for you!
Favorite airport would have to Rick husband Amarillo international (my hometown airport) A nice small regional airport with most flights to DFW or love field.
Can you review Indianapolis Intl Airport,my home airport. It’s not that big but a little bigger than GSO. IND is very clean and the people are friendly
Please come to Columbus, Ohio John Glenn Airport, to do your commentary!!! 🙏😷✈ ✅
My hometown is Kroc and we have a 30 min international flight to Cyyz!
Air Canada cancelled that route over 2 years ago.
Lol
Make this a series? Savannah is an awesome little airport!
When Hartfield-Jackson is your hometown airport 😎
Hey Jeb, what’s the cost of living and the locals like in the piedmont/Greensboro Area?
Jo'burg is the best airport. Shout out to my fellow South Africans. We will get through this virus together.
My favorite airport is Phoenix Sky harbor Internatinal Airport. Love the video.
Yoo, the "Salmon Thirsty Salmon" is at Greensboro? Ive been on that plane!
Loved the video wonderful job like you always do see in the sky sometime👍🏻👍🏻❤️✈️
My home airport is Oakland International, I’m closer to it than San Francisco
Favorite airport Sitka Rocky Gutierrez airport Sitka Alaska
SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON!
Great content being the unofficial spokesman for your airport. Louisville is my home airport and I will always remember when Piedmont Airlines flew a route via one of it's 727s from Newark, Cincinnati, Louisville, Greensboro High Point to Washington Reagan. Flight 65 ran for many years with Piedmont. Via Piedmont in those days traveled via Charlotte. Piedmont is how I became a frequent flyer and my first award ticket as a teenager. For this avgeek, went on to globetrekking. Looking back fond memories of my home airport, Louisville. Keep up the great work, fellow aviation enthusiasts!!!!
Great video Jeb. When I started my now over 2000 flights for my career as a consultant in 1997 my very first commute was from CMH-CLT-GSO , did that trip weekly for 5 months and always love GSO .
Burbank Airport is my favorite!
Alaska and Southwest should fly there from KSNA
I got my PPL at KINT ! Loved this video, on GSO. I love commuting out of GSO and happy it's my home airport .
Nice to see a bunch of Home-PTI people here, including the Jeb himself
My favorite airport Ben gurion airport tel aviv Israel 🇮🇱
Could you make a video on what you think the future of air travel will be after the pandemic?
Incheon is my favorite but KMCI is home
Next week, I’ll be going on a 737 for Southwest Airlines from KMDW(Chicago Midway) to KPHX( Sky harbor airport) in Arizona
Rifty fish
KIND for sure love Indy's airport
My home airport is ORD chicago O'hare. :)
I'm surprised that the management of GSO wouldn't have allowed you more access instead of thru fences etc....
Been there many of times for work since my company headquarters is in Greensboro!
Mahalos Jeb!
Bengaluru is my favourite airport (BLR)
Then I must be the unofficial youtuber of KLAS- best airport I’ve been to in terms of how they deal with passengers!
I fly to McCarran a lot and it’s always been easy and fun. I really like it.
I go to Guilford College and I fly from GSO a lot:):):)
My favorite is my local New Castle County airport. The biggest airport in Delaware. We have no int airports or rollercoasters. I am one of few viewers in Delaware
my fav airport is austin bergstorm intl
Hey, PTI is my home airport also! I love flying out of PTI as it is simple and closer to home than RDU. It’s simple and easy to get in and out of and I love hanging out in the observation room before my flights. Great to see PTI getting the attention it deserved!
Yes! 50th comment
Really cool video Jeb! GSO is a really cool airport with an interesting history! Thanks for sharing it with us!!
The 10,000 foot runway makes PTI a B-52 bomber capable facility and is used, like ILM Wilmington, for Air Force One touch and go practice. FedEx was going to move its main hub to PTI and close its Memphis hub, but that plan was put on hold years ago. ILM was also an emergency landing site for the space shuttle program and another cold war era B-52 rated field.
I think you’re mistaking ILM for ISO in Kinston, NC. ISO has an 11,400 ft runway compared to ILM’s standard 8,000 ft runway.
@@y0mama20202 No, ILM was a shuttle back up landing site given its closeness to the coast.
Great video Jeb as always hope we can get flying again soon!
I just discovered your channel several days ago and have been binge watching! I absolutely love flying and am quite envious of all your experiences and opportunities! It is a dream of mine to be able to travel the world! This video really caught my eye as we lived in Mount Airy for 8 years and flew in and out of GSO/PTI many times! It was our closest international airport and with my family living in the west, we flew quite a bit. We also flew out of CLT and RDU, if the tickets from there were cheaper than GSO. Now we live in Phoenix but there are things I miss about North Carolina!
My favorite airport is AVL (Asheville Regional Airport)! Most beautiful little airport in the world! ❤❤❤
I love Asheville a ton! I fly out of there when I have a flight during college
I flew into AVL several times in the early 1980s when I went to summer camp nearby. Nice little airport. Doesn’t look like it’s changed much. I’m sure having Allegiant is huge especially with all the Floridians’ vacation homes.
ROA is my favorite airport
Lol IAD is my home airport
DCA is mine tho IAD is 10 min farther
my home airport is RDU (Raleigh-Durham International) i love the new terminal 2 its really easy to get from gate to gate and i also like the small airport park where you can watch planes and stuff
My favorite airport is SNA
I love PTI airport, i have been flying in and out of it since 2010, and i just love it.
I was in the highway when i saw one united plane landing on Smith Reynolds and i was very confused until i saw the news, iv stopped a few times in the past couple of weeks just to see them, too bad i didn't know you were there.
Next flight i'm having at PTI Should be coming up this august :) Looking forward to it haha
No way, I got to North C often, that’s my favorite airport there, but it’s sad because the last time I flew there it was on an MD80 AA 😢 and now Delta doesn’t fly them their either.
Im actually going there in like 3 weeks but to Willmington this time.
I love my MSP
American flys there
Interesting fact on Swift Air at GSO. I love medium and smaller size commercial airports. You really want them to succeed and grow, but to never loose the charm.
Also, 6:57 FlyDubai Max? Nice
Philly is my home airport
Dude! Extraordinary video! Thanks for the news. I used to live in North Carolina and Greensboro was my favorite airport! Now I got Hartsfield Jackson!
Thanks for the video!! LOVE this airport. Always fun flying into it as it means I am visiting family... Looking forward to my next trip there. Stay safe Jeb!
I love GSO! The nicest TSA and airport staff at any airport I have been in. Live in Chicago but have to be in High Point often for work. So easy to get to GSO from ORD and I make that trip about 12 times a year. Thanks for the video.
Flown out of GSO I think 6 times for the past six years I’ve been there once a year a great airport I know it pretty well my home airport is LGA/JFK favorite airport is slc
My home airport is Toronto Pearson. It’s a great airport and I love plane spotting there before we hop on our flight. I really can’t wait to fly again.
Always enjoy checking out airports! If you make it out here to HND, you should look into ANA's maintenance hanger tour!
You're lucky to have such an easy airport as your home base. My home airport, Boston Logan, can be a nightmare sometimes! But it's very close to the city so that is a plus.
Detroit is the best airport, the terminal is easy to understand and so nice
It’s my favourite airport to transit through
I flew through there some years ago. FedEx is big there I work for them. Nice airport.
Never knew that my local MRO provider (HAECO) also works in the States! Great video Jeb, hope to see you in the sky soon!
Loved this video about Triad Airport. Have you ever met the guys who run the opposing bases? Air Traffic Talk podcast. One of them is a triad controller.
Come to JAX after quarantine, it's the best smaller airport I've been to (and I've been to a ton)!
My hometown airport is Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT. (BDL) Such an easy Airport to use. Direct flights to ATL, CLT, ORD, JFK, EWR, IAD, IAH, DEN, and even places like Dublin and Toronto. How can you not love a small Airport like that? Lol
Hi Jeb, I’m in Cary, NC and a very frequent traveler out of RDU. Haven’t flown since March 3-4th, a two day trip RDU-LAX, SNA-ATL-RDU. Pretty sure this is the longest I’ve gone “flightless” in my 30+ year career. I’m a rare Flying Colonel on Delta, ever heard of it? I share your love of aviation. Sad what is happening right now. We were up to 58 non-stop destinations pre COVID and we are currently down to 22 I believe. Enjoyed this, didn’t know much of what you covered. May have to take a drive over and look around. You have a great Italian deli in G’boro that I like!
I encourage you to look into Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport/KIWA/AZA , with all sorts of awesome 737 classics from Swift-air/Iaero airways, regular allegiant service (at one point we had AAY 757 service to Honolulu), “Swoop” service (Canadian subsidiary of Westjet), and even Westjet itself! Let’s not forget about some amazing visitors, such an 10-tanker the DC-10, right now, 2 BaE 146 “Avro” tankers, and sometimes even an MD-87 tanker. And, on occasion you’ll find amazing stuff you’ll never see at Sky Harbor, such as a World Atlantic MD-83 charter, Eastern airlines charter planes, an Antonov AN-124, and very rarely, Boeing test/freighter planes! We had some 787 testing done here, and sometimes we get a 747-8 cargo to carry cargo (same job as that AN-124). Mesa gateway is my home, coupled with an amazing fleet of visitors, amazing spotting locations, and frequent private jet visits with many hangar facilities like GSO... It is an amazing little airport, and if you’re ever in the area, I recommend you give it a look! P.S. Jeb, if you ever fly here, I’d love to your plane coming in if I have the time!
What a nice airport! My home airport is MCO. However my favourite airport is TPA.
Neat video. I’m in Martinsville and my first flight was around 1980 when I was a kid. It was in the old terminal that is now the TH Davis Aviation Center (I’m looking for pics of this facility in operation before current PTI was built). I always fly PTI !
I hereby declare both the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport and Lexington’s Bluegrass Regional Airport as my official airports!😸
Me: that's a good idea, _looks up my local airport_
Google: BOS
Me: I'm going to cheat and look up the local airport near my sister's place, I visit her all the time that counts.
Google: EWR
Me: Okay screw it, Jeb said there are no rules, I'm going with where I grew up and where my parents still live.
Google: PHL
Me: *_I should have known this trip would end in sadness._*
On the real, I miss having the privilege to complain about TSA at Newark taking an hour to process a 5:30am half-full 737-8 flight to ORD, or it taking 90 minutes to process one very delayed Swiss A330 flight at 12:30am also at EWR. One day we'll get to fly again... one day...
Did anyone else see two neon green-shaped orbs floating with the air current, going north to south over Guilford County 07/16/2023 at 10:15pm, through at least 11:45pm Sunday night? I watched them (tethered) by a neon green cable. At about 10:50:pm, a passenger jet that flys the same route nightly made no turn and flew
over the JP building heading east. I did not see it again. About the time I would have had a clear view, this old man ran out of gas and went inside the house. Now these balloons cut off their lights now and then, but they always came on within ten seconds. You could see the brightly colored neon green running the length of the cable, that kept the orbs from flying apart. If only I could have made it another ten minutes, I might have seen the entire mechanism. I heard not a sound, they're were no wind currents and it never changed directions for over an hour. The one orb was twice the size of Junior. I did flash a 3000 lumens flashlight its way, and when I did, it shut down. I went back outside about midnight, and there was still no sound and no color. My encounter was gone. I've called the city, I called Channel 8, and now I'm trying to reach the airport tower. Please let me know if they saw the same thing, please!
I live in the Upstate of SC just to your south a bit, and Greenville/Spartanburg Int’l (GSP) is my home airport. I can’t tell you how many times gate agents at airports such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, or Chicago Midway have mispronounced Greenville as “Greensville/Spartanburg” or even “Greensville/Spartansburg”. 😣 (Bless their hearts!) I guess they get it confused with Greensboro.
My home airports are TPA/PIE when I’m in Florida and ABE when I’m in PA. Talk about confusing names, Tampa International Airport is TPA but ABE (which stands for Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton) goes by Lehigh Valley International Airport.
Hi Jeb quite interesting to learn about "your" airport. Really makes me want to travel there. Thanks for the information. Hope to see you in the ccx air soon.
I’d love to be an unofficial UA-camr for my home airport, Lindbergh Field/San Diego International, but SANSpotter beat me to it (Curse You, Scott!)
Okay, NOW I understand why I totally get you .... lol ... it's been a minute since I have been in Greensboro ...
Thank you jeb this was very interesting! Also thanks for liking my Instagram comment
