Having lived in an well insulated home in a very sun-exposed, warm climate with zero fans or AC, I highly recommend getting 100% linen curtains to cover the windows in summer. This quick fix easily brought our house temperature down by 15 degrees. The linen still lets the light in but does wonders for blocking the heat.

I used citrus strip on my kitchen cabinets. It worked way way better when I covered in plastic after application and let it sit overnight.

I was going to recommend the same thing! Apply the paste, cover it so the volital oils don't evaporate, and let that sucker sit overnite. Anything else is an exercise in frustration! It comes in a spray now?! That is just 🤪! How I wish I had known that you were going to do that I could have given you a "heads up!"

If I'm remembering correctly, a friend in Abilene did the cover in plastic and then left wet towels over it overnight. Her son didn't even use the scraper or wire brush on most of it. She was thinking that the spots that needed a second application were the original paint that had been painted over several times?

    • @Jen.O
      @Jen.O 3 місяці тому +2

Yes to the plastic cover! Also: a friend puts sawdust over the goop just before she starts the actually stripping process, the sawdust sucks up the paint debri. The final step is sanding or going over the surface with steel wool to get it smooth before painting on the primer.

Painters usually overlap the paint on exterior glass a quarter inch up the glass panes from the bottom. That means water flows off; if you just make the painted edge exactly where the wood and glass meet then water can get into the joint and cause rot. Hope I explained that OK. Love your work!

Feeling your frustration, Ashley. I always start out with eco-friendly stripper. Then I ALWAYS lose patience with it and switch to the nasty but effective kind. Grrrrrr. And be careful about sanding and scraping old doors and furniture. More often than not, you're dealing with lead paint.

Ashley I so respect your work ethic. It’s too late for this time, however, if you use stripper cover it with Saran Wrap just lay a layer on it helps keep the stripper from evaporating so fast. And unfortunately the toxic is stronger.
The dome is looking beautiful. I am so happy to see you taking time for you and friends. Your homestead is a looong term project. As always thank you for great video.

So I have used the citrus strip and found unless you have perfect conditions you have to lay a super thick layer to get anything out of it. I have used a sand blaster as well it works well they have mediums for striping paint of all different surfaces. There tends to be more sanding involved but I didn't mind cause it seemed to work faster even with extra sanding. Plus with a sandblaster you can use it on a lot of things for refinishing. Plus gentle abrasive can frost you glass if you want too.

My granduncle used a mixture of wasching soda, soap, fine sand mixed with water to get old oilpaints of wood. Mix a paste, spread it on the painted wood, let it sit for a few hours and scrape it of with a spatula. Repeat this, if necssary. Finally sand of residue paint with sandpaper.

All lovely, and impressive work. Next time you are trying to strip paint like that, try to do it at least in the shade, and after sunset or or shortly after dawn if possible. You could also 4 point spread large wet piece of cloth on a tall frame or between two trees, clothesline, etc. frame upwind of your project. Breeze or wind will cool the area as it passes through the cloth and over item. When I try to do something I've never done before, I try to understand how long it should take, and then quadruple at least. LOL For projects I'm already proficient in, I try to give myself time and a half to double when planning for time. So much can come straight out of left field and throw you off your time table. Good luck in the future.

TIP FOR COOLER DOME- cover the windows with either insulated curtains- or shutters. My family has used a variety of window covers to help maintain heat in winter, coolness in summer.
Old quilted bedspreads work great! Mount inside window frame, a wooden dowel with closet wood dowel holders, one circular, the other circular, but with an opening for wood dowel to slip in and out, for changing, or washing curtains.
There is a silver reflective insulating fabric available, to enclose between layers off fabric, reflective side aimed outward, but white fabric on outside of reflective insulation, then whatever decorative fabric you want on the inside.
You can make these roll up/down, or fold up/down to open and close window covers.
Itmakes a huge difference in temperature inside, and less heat is needed in winter, less cooling required in summer.
Awnings, like shade sails were designed to keep homes cooler in summer, too. Fabric awnings can be designed to fold up and secure, or remove in winter, back in place for summer.
Each shade layer adds cooling effect, for more comfort.

To AC her room. Barry about 100-200' of pipe about 4'+ underground. Connect into the hut at a low point. Vent high. As the room heats the ground will cool the outside air and vent into the room as the hot air escapes through the exhaust vent. Keep critters out with copper wool at the pipe inlet. Winter or cold nights the ground helps heat the air maintaining a stable temp,

Why does EVerything ALways take longer than you think it will? I really can't even think of any exceptions. It's like it's a corollary to Murphy's Law or something. It gives me a lot of sympathy not only for you but also for your children since they've obviously noticed the challenges you must overcome with every little step you take. On the other hand, I'm really excited for you that you're so close to finishing your daughter's new digs. I was also really pleased to see you opening your gate the new way. (I pictured you giving your guests the code instead of either your guests having to go open it the old painstaking way or somebody having to trek out to the gate and open it. Maybe you feel a little safer now on your property too since there's no place on earth that's really safe.) Maybe you're removing the thorns in your sides one at a time. I sure hope that you have a sense of accomplishment with each completed project!

all the recipes come from My Mom and our dairy farm unless stated otherwise
In the summer we would have family and friends come over for a Bar-be-cue which included Barbecue meat from animals we raised and butcherer ourselves. The old fashion Ice Cream cranks (at least 2) with old towels for one of the kids to set on and several people to turn the crank. After my Mom died I took her Brown recipe box and any other special recipes and saved them to my Recipe files. I also took her favorite recipes from all her Farm Journal cookbooks and put in my file. Along with a Family Recipe book I made years ago of each of my brothers(3) and sisters (2) and mine and made it for each of my brothers & sisters and their children and my Mom for Christmas presents. Hi ashley... for future use a little homenade stripper: take soda NaOH, make a 30% solution or less. In the fluid you mix a little bit of wallpaper glue already gelatinous, not the powder. ( you can also take a prepared wallpaper glue and just add NaOH. For me works best half/half gluepaste/ sodafluid) With that paste you can apply it and then cover it with plastik ( in contact with the gel) so it doesnt dry too fast. Maybe you can even add glue to that ecological stripper.
Important: rinse it thouroghly after being done with water and NEUTRALISE the stripper with some mild acid like citronacid or vinager.
    Till your next stripping experiment.
Ah.. naoh does not go well with oak and walnut both turn black.
All the pinekind of woods will be fine.
    always stripping IN THE SHADOW!!

No not really. Evap cooler is most likely the way to go. It's only going to be a little uncomfortable a few months out of the year.

Can I share what I've learned about chemical paint strippers?:
    1) They only work when wet, so in a desert you'll need to keep in the shade at the very least
    2) If you wrap the item up in cheap kitchen cling film after applying the stripper it will stay wet for WAY longer (cling film is cheaper than paint stripper by a mile!)
    3) If you're doing it outdoors, go for the strongest stripper you can find - the VOC fumes are nasty, but outdoors it's bearable and works.
Your time is the most expensive part of a job like this. Nuke it, nutralise it, relax and enjoy!

I do recommend rinsing down the door with a 50/50 mix vinegar/water on the door after using the caustic soda based stripper... Just to neutralize the caustic soda (probably) soaked into the wood...

Ashley, you are so very beautiful !
An incredibly beautiful person, as you are a quintessential Madré/Creator. As a mother to such wonderful humans, a loving wife to such a fortunate Hubby, creating and nurturing family both humans and four leggeds, home, homestead and community. A true artist in EVERY aspect of your life, expressing your authenticity, vision, passion, incredibly beautiful design sensibility and your many aspects of craftwomanship.
As an artist that has been creating life, family (my "kids" all in their 30'now), home, community, etc.
Ashley, I recognize your unique and extraordinary beauty !
My adult "kids" are in their thirties now, but when we were all much younger and our days were packed with life, there were times or moments of overwhelm, the urge to run, moments of wanting to throw in the towel, tears from exhaustion or an urge to discover a primal gutteral expression while stretched to a max demand. I've had and have a life that I love and I have been so very blessed along the way, but the challenging moments and or seasons as an extremely creative person of both family, endless projects and authentic life are all just a part of it. I am so very proud of you and for mentioning self care of reaching out beyond your closest peeps for expression, pondering and insights with therapy. A choice of self love and high level health and wellness as you're professionally juggling many things and so dynamically.
May you take sunsets perhaps, if even for a moment to acknowledge your personal BEAUTY and yes then (as I assume you do) all of the vast beauty around you......
May the joy of love and creating always fill your heart as you smile as precious as the Sun,
    Tara

Yay, getting Adali's home done! Great, 30 minutes to finish applying the base coat all the way around. Yum, delicious food in the big city, dresser under bed and color paint for door! Nice find! That does sound like chimes sweeping the floor! Cool! Plastering is done! Take the night off Ashley! The kittens are soooo cute! So are the kids (baby goats). I hope that citrus paint stripper works well. Good, it's bubbling up. Good sign. Good idea to test the concrete stain under the bed! I like the dark too! It always takes longer than you think it will! You have to have a great time with your friends. Yay, three coats are enough. I do really like the look of that door! I love the automatic gate! The harsh chemical strippers do work well. It's going to be hard around all those pieces of glass. Good thing the rain went around you. It looks good stripped. I like that color on the door. Is that the same color as the milk room cabinets? Thanks for this video Longnecker family! It just keeps getting better and better!

You are such a devoted mom, and I can see the love in your daughter's eyes when she looks at you. Your work is outstanding and beautiful. I have only one concern..the long term effects of all this work on your back. Please, please remember...though you are in your 40's, your back is taking a beating, and life long back pain can be and often is crippling. I speak from experience. My life as I knew it is gone thanks to my back...lower spine to be precise. Go slower. Never lift heavy objects alone. Take more breaks instead of pushing for job completion. Remember...an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.

Future reference, the best stripper that I know of is red devil lie mixed in water. You can look it up to find the exact ratios. It works wonderfully, and is the cheapest latest strip would that I know of.🙏🕊️🥀🌹🌻🌼☕💜❤️
