I show this video to my students every year, multiple times throughout the school year. I want them to see why I am so strict about making sure they're all seated properly. I drive safe, but I cannot control what other drivers do out on the road, so I want to be sure that if something happens they're all okay. I tell them about all the safety features of the bus, so they know how I and the bus are keeping them safe. As far as I'm concerned, my ONLY job is keeping my kids safe.
you are an absolute angel, thank you for doing what’s right. i ran across this video because of an incident that happened yesterday in my province that involved a school bus without seatbelts going down an embankment. everything is very new so i have no idea if it was the bus driver/company’s fault, or if the kids were briefed on safety features, but that same bus company is the one my school used to use when i was younger, and i was NEVER ONCE taught about any safety features, i only really took notice to them because i was an observant kid. i can’t help but wonder how many debilitating and life changing injuries could’ve been prevented yesterday if the bus had seatbelts and the kids were given a proper safety briefing.
Yeah, but you know, no one ever wants to talk about a bus fire and how many seconds you have to get off that bus, and what if a bus gets stuck on a train track...?
My bus driver was very strict when I rode bus to and from school. He made sure everyone was seated and facing forward at all times. Nowadays the bus drivers don't care if they are standing or facing backwards or whatever as long as they were behind the white line while the bus was in motion
Not true for me or the school bus company I work for! 🚌 I CARE about all my kids, and we enforce the rules for safety. We’re a small company with about 30 routes, so it’s a hell of a lot better than First Student, etc….🤔😉👍🏻👍🏻

Safe? the entire body is getting ripped of the chassis at 0:53. And i watched a few school bus demolition derbys and the rear end is also weak as shit because the body is getting squashed from the chassis, so they should make a bull bar at the back.
Looks like the kid kneeling backwards on a seat had a rather soft impact with the seat in from of him. His spine was kept straight and he probably didn't have whiplash.
A bus has a fucking massive crumple zone at the front, the entire body is so rigid it won't bend when hit by a train, and they're so heavy they can take out a storefront including concrete pillars and keep rolling. Buses may not be Toyota Airbags on Wheels, but they're by far not the least safe thing on the road.

oEx0duSo Ok, but that is still not the reason to not include seat belts. I would use some kind of a propaganda to convince them to wear the seat belts if I was a teacher.
Some people here say that in case of a crash the children will be able to escape easier if there aren't seat belts. If you slam yourself in the front seat and break your neck, how are going to be able to get out of the burning bus;A bus is a large vehicle .I don't think it can be burnt completely in 2 minutes. Also it isn't very difficult to press a button to unbuckle the seat belt. Most children can do it from the age of 7
l rode school buses all the way from kindergarten to 12 grade from thomas, international, and blue bird and l have been in 3 bus accidents. l can tell you that the bus is only this dangerous if the kids are all vegetables. in a head on crash we don't slam our heads into our seats, our natural reaction was to put up our hands and so we didn't slam into the seat in front of us. once we got T-boned by a trainee in a fire truck and we did slide around quite a bit but nobody was seriously hurt, just a few sprains and one kid broke her arm.
also this isn't a real world scenario, a bus would plow right through a car or a house. there isn't anything on a freeway or public road that can stop a speeding bus in less than a second.
If anything it looks like the shoulder belt for shorter kids might induce severe neck injury. That one dummies' head was yanked to almost 90 degrees in the impact
My bus driver yelled at me for "scaring people" when I revealed how truly unsafe buses are. Her exact words were: SHUT UP, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANOTHER WORD OUT OF YOU!
They should have belts, it doesn’t matter if it’s not cost affective. A bus in a roll over or hit from the side will send kids flying into other seats and down the aisle, and bodies become weapons and hit other people
Not saying that buses don't need seat belts, but from 2007-2016, only 58 kids total died in the US as occupants of school transportation vehicles. That's about 5-6 kids killed per year. Tragic, but an infintesimal number compared to most other causes of death. If you're going to spend money on child safety, it would be much better spent equipping families with appropriate child safety seats and training parents in their use, given the hundreds of kids that die in car wrecks every year, versus 6 that die in school bus crashes (e.g. 636 kids (0-12) died in car crashes in 2018, or about 100x the number on average that die from school bus crashes)
+Blood Eagle I still think this bus needs a driver inside. What kind of bus would hit a concrete wall driverless? The driver would have to go through the service door in order to bail out
+Derek Sanders dude look at the video they dont need a dummy to tell you driver would likely die in this collision the whole front end being pushed back would have squished any human like a bug just look at the footwell and picture your legs being there during that haha
It amazes me how there wasn’t and still aren’t seat belts in school buses for kids. Our future and most vulnerable and innocent group of people don’t have protection, it just blows my mind. Well like everything in America it will take serious accident where there are multiple deaths involved for people to wake up and say “maybe we should put seat belts in there...🤦♂️
l think this bus did very well, it was in one piece. and you have to keep in mind that a crash like this can never happen in the real world because there aren't any ballistics walls sitting in the middle of the road waiting to get hit. a bus is a very large and heavy vehicle, which means it takes a lot of energy to move and stop it. so if a car hits a bus then the bus would barely move, it would be like a skinny guy charging at a body builder. and if a bus were to hit a car then it would take that car for a ride since the car isn't heavy enough to stop the bus, worst case scenario is the bus hits a building. even still it wouldn't be as bad as the accident portrayed in this test since the walls of a house give way a lot easier than a ballistics wall designed to survive a nuclear holocaust.
The hood is made of fiberglass which is very delicate and not good at absorbing energy. I think the hood should be made out of aluminum honeycomb which crushes instead of fiberglass that just gives away and allows the energy to put the driver at risk while the kids would have compartmantilzation. However compartmantilzation would only work in a frontal crash. Compartmantilzation would offer inadequate protection in a side crash or rollover crash.
You're wrong ! It's steel outside, than it has a steel frame and another inner layer of perforated steel sheets. I'm talking about the one on the video. It's made since 2012. I've seen some older ones made 2003-2007 and they are exactly the same structure. You might be talking about those vans made on school buses...
Now try it with the bus turned over upside down, all the kids belted in, and the bus is on fire. How fast can someone run through it cutting all the belts off so the kids can get out? Is that faster than the bus can become fully engulfed? Now that would be a great test, and help end the seat belts on school buses or not debate.
@catlover2543 Theoretically, the high seat backs are supposed to keep the kids in their seat area instead of going out the windshield, when not wearing seatbelts. Note that word, "theoretically"...

We all want more safety on the bus but as a driver I know a few things that need to happen before they get any better. 1. Actually force school administrators to learn about and be a part of safety. Most do care but some just want the kids on the bus and the bus gone. 2. Get some real money into buses, most districts can only afford the base model old buses. 3. put more effort into educating the kids and parents about it. 4. stop cramming so many kids onto a bus. Compartmentalization works, but when you put 3 to a seat, the one on the edge isn't safe. It's not a 72 passenger, its a 48 for all but the smaller elementary students.
These videos should be showed to students. How can a child understand the dangers if they don't see what can happen 🤔. It's not for scarring them, but make them aware of the dangers by not staying seated. And facing forward....
how will the driver keep 84 seat belts buckled? unbuckled seat belts will injure kids when they get tossed around in an accident or even on a daily routine drive. if the bus catches on fire how will driver unbuckle 84 seat belts in under 2 minutes? busses get consumed in flames completely in 2 minutes because of all the padded seats.
PrinceDarkness the bus can not move if one seat belt is not buckled. kids unbuckle always. so the bus would never go anywhere. thats 84 seat belts bus driver has to keep buckling.
While a bus driver can't guarantee that all kids have seat belts buckled, anyone over 4 should know that seat belts are at least a little important. I calculated that including the driver, a bus with 24 seats and a drivers seat can hold up to 73 people. Is 73 life's put at risk worth the money? (Yes, I know bus drivers sometimes have seat belts but other times they don't.)
Why not PROPER seats that are designed to cushion impact..plus walls and ceiling padded...to expect seat belt usage by kids...that isn't going to happen. You need to think past the belts.
l don't think wearing your seatbelt should be a law. if you don't wear your seatbelt it only effects you, if l don't want to wear a seatbelt and l am willing to take the risk then that's on me and it should be my decision.
Even if they did have them, the driver most likely would only check the kids in front, and all the others most likely won't wear them because "it's not cool" or something like that
Those of you saying they need seat belts, are you going to jump in that burning bus and rescue all the children stuck in their belts? Nah I didn't think so you, would just record it and say oh my someone needs to do something. They need some more safety on buses but seat belts really aren't the amswer. Imagine 1 bus driver trying to drive and enforce that many kids to wear it... good luck!
Today we had a school bus accident at Gilmer County, Ellijay, GA, but luckly no one die, but their were some injures.(1/22/18) I was a luckly person and did not ride that bus.
the seats are made to take the in packed like a airbag and seat belts in a bus is the worst idea ever unless the bus companies plan to put more adults in the buss to put the kids in the seat belts and take them out of it
buses don't have seatbelts because kids kept taking them off which makes them useless, so then they made the seatbelts harder to take off so kids would keep their seatbelts on... then kids started getting stuck to their seats when they only had seconds to get off of the bus, so it's actually safer without seatbelts. you have to keep in mind that this bus in the test hit a ballistics wall head on at a high speed, this is a crash that could never happen in a real world scenario. if you got into a crash on a bus then you would be just fine because you can't stop a speeding 30,000 pound school bus with a car or a brick wall. which means a real world school bus will never experience the G-force the bus in this test experienced.
LOL. Nice idea but like TPMS and traction control - utterly worthless. Why? Ok - you try keeping 70 kids wearing seatbelts while your back is turned, driving a bus. It becomes more of a safety concern, the more the driver has to check that the kids are doing what they're supposed to be doing.
Your internal organs would get whiplash. It's not the speed you know, it's the g forces. The gravity velocity doesn't slow down in time of the crash. So basically if the car stops, you won't as yOure not slowing down fast enough. But seat belts stop us going further, so the g carries on through the organs, then it's stops.
+Super Trini Gamer based on you previous statement I think its obvious to everyone that you are not in a position to comment on your own mental health and especially the actions on a mother person.
I used to ride a bus and there where seatbelts but they wouldn’t let me or the other kids wear em.. Glad I switched schools the same day my bus broke down

Curious bout flat nose buses; mines a flat nose with a lotta power; driver cares bout her just as much as his farm with pure heart; do flat nose tests
And a bus is gonna crash into a wall like that how?
how will the driver keep 84 seat belts buckled? unbuckled seat belts will injure kids when they get tossed around in an accident or even on a daily routine drive. if the bus catches on fire how will driver unbuckle 84 seat belts in under 2 minutes? busses get consumed in flames completely in 2 minutes because of all the padded seats.
PrinceDarkness the bus can not move if one seat belt is not buckled. kids unbuckle always. so the bus would never go anywhere. thats 84 seat belts bus driver has to keep buckling.
Francisco Anzaldo add a fire suppression system
Memorible werd school districts cant afford that.
as I can see you are clearly against safety , lets remove all airbags and seatbelts from all vehicles you happy NOW!!
Memorible werd lets have u drive a bus before u open your mouth again.
No airbag????????
But ours has no seatbelts which would make it worst…
While a bus driver can't guarantee that all kids have seat belts buckled, anyone over 4 should know that seat belts are at least a little important. I calculated that including the driver, a bus with 24 seats and a drivers seat can hold up to 73 people. Is 73 life's put at risk worth the money? (Yes, I know bus drivers sometimes have seat belts but other times they don't.)
SEATBELTS ARE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY unless you're driving a big truck full of children of course!
My bus has no belts.
And school busses have very thin sides
Except there aren't any seat belts on school buses
How the hell are seatbelts not required on public school buses?!!
That 'nose' on the bus helps a great deal.
it was cool how we had the view of one of the dummy's maybe there trying to show use what's it like to be in a car crash correct
Would have had some injury’s. They don’t put seat belts on because they think that they won’t get hurt
I was on a bus crash yesterday
make sure you wear your seatbelt if the bus has seatbelts
Why not PROPER seats that are designed to cushion impact..plus walls and ceiling padded...to expect seat belt usage by kids...that isn't going to happen. You need to think past the belts.
Damn thats actually really good
The fact that it's the law to wear your seatbelt but school busses don't have seatbelts makes me really frustrated. #schoolbussesneedseatbelts
I mean people in vehicles like cars and trucks are required to wear them.
no one wears them anyway
Ash Ketchum apparently Ash from pokemon, advocates breaking the law lol
l don't think wearing your seatbelt should be a law. if you don't wear your seatbelt it only effects you, if l don't want to wear a seatbelt and l am willing to take the risk then that's on me and it should be my decision.
Imagine 1 bus driver trying to drive and enforce that many kids to wear it... good luck!
News Flash most kids know how to unbuckle a seat belt......
These aren't toddlers.
Today we had a school bus accident at Gilmer County, Ellijay, GA, but luckly no one die, but their were some injures.(1/22/18) I was a luckly person and did not ride that bus.

Idk why but that was so satisfying lmao
pretty nice crumble at the front
the seats are made to take the in packed like a airbag and seat belts in a bus is the worst idea ever unless the bus companies plan to put more adults in the buss to put the kids in the seat belts and take them out of it
wolf Frappier yeah the seats are built like brick walls, so you can smash your face into them when you crash
buses don't have seatbelts because kids kept taking them off which makes them useless, so then they made the seatbelts harder to take off so kids would keep their seatbelts on... then kids started getting stuck to their seats when they only had seconds to get off of the bus, so it's actually safer without seatbelts. you have to keep in mind that this bus in the test hit a ballistics wall head on at a high speed, this is a crash that could never happen in a real world scenario. if you got into a crash on a bus then you would be just fine because you can't stop a speeding 30,000 pound school bus with a car or a brick wall. which means a real world school bus will never experience the G-force the bus in this test experienced.
LOL. Nice idea but like TPMS and traction control - utterly worthless. Why? Ok - you try keeping 70 kids wearing seatbelts while your back is turned, driving a bus. It becomes more of a safety concern, the more the driver has to check that the kids are doing what they're supposed to be doing.
Once I went on a wrong bus it hit a bumper off
Nice test! 👍
This why buses need seat belts
@Mr Sunshines You must be suicidal
Let's be real. No kid is going to be sitting like well-mannered adults. They're gonna be leaning on the seat, sitting sideways, etc.
R.I.P kids in the bus
Blueface: lemme drive the bus
AND THATS HOW WE ALL DIE
Papaya 8 nnnnnn
nope.
if they simply turned the seats around so they face the back of the bus even without seat belts the reduction in whiplash would be massive.
+Super Trini Gamer your a fucking moron lol
+Super Trini Gamer based on you previous statement I think its obvious to everyone that you are not in a position to comment on your own mental health and especially the actions on a mother person.
+Andrew f
Dude, conversation ended, okay?
+Super Trini I have a master's degree in physics can you say the same?
I used to ride a bus and there where seatbelts but they wouldn’t let me or the other kids wear em..
Glad I switched schools the same day my bus broke down
It would make more sense to make the seats face backwards
