This may not be a "luxury feature" to many people, but having had a dingy kitchen for a very long time, it was luxury to me to have under-cabinet lighting and a lighted cabinet with reed glass in the doors. And it's all dimmable! 😃

My favorite cabinet feature is a motorized trash bin in my island, next to the sink. Just bump the cabinet door with your knee and a motor pops it out. Then bump again to close. When your hands are wet or greasy or full of trash, it keeps the front of the cabinet and hardware much cleaner and saves wear. Love your channel!

As a suprise to my sister, I did repairs to her kitchen and repainted it while she is away on vacay. I made a curtain panel for a 6 ft tall open shelf unit holding various appliances. I did various repairs, but the thing I would say was luxurious, was replacing all recessed ceiling lights with LED bulbs and then installing a dimmer switch for them, instant vibe! (Loving the new hair-do Monsieur!!)

YES! YES! YES! To drawers. My husband and I just completed our kitchen renovation. I’m blessed that to have a husband who does woodworking and was able to create and build the kitchen that I wanted, much to his dismay 😂. He remodeled my pantry to become a working pantry. The bottoms are ALL pullout drawers with doors in front. When it came to the kitchen, I have a 10 foot island with the stove top on it. The pots and pans each have a drawer. We did NOT have waste any space. Technically it looks like a galley kitchen. 15:38 The dishes are ALL in drawers. He loves it!! Why? Because when he unloads the dishwasher, the plates go right in the drawer. I do have floating shelves. One side is the coffee section and the other is for those things that I don’t use on a daily basis. We also added the accent to the kickboards. After brain surgery and foot surgery, it’s all done!

I don’t like feet on kitchen cabinets. Anything that falls on the floor (dirt, dust, food, liquids) ends up under the cabinets. It is makes it a lot harder to clean and when I see it I wonder what gross bacteria laced stuff is underneath.

As I have said in previous videos, many luxury finishes may require more work to maintain. The key is to determine if you love and want a particular finish, furniture or type of decor enough to justify the extra work. Bacteria and dirt can develop anywhere if a home isn’t kept properly clean. I think my subscribers likely know to keep their homes clean and maintain issues that arise from some finishes.

When my husband was remodeling a flip house we were using stock cabinets, we immediately upgraded them with trim/molding. In the area that had a soffit above the cabinets, it had to stay for vent work, my husband made it line up with the upper cabinets, smoothed the wall added trim and crown molding truly gave it a custom built in look. the gaps we did exactly what you mentioned adding fluted trim pieces. great advice!

In our recent kitchen renovation of out 1981 house, our interior designer drew a custom crown molding that our contractor built for us. We love it. Our backsplash extends to the ceiling above the sink between the full-height cabinets. I stumbled on a great accent mica glass tile (that pulls in the other colors of the kitchen) that we used to make 3'X2' inset with a knife rail above the sink to break up the expanse of the backsplash tile because the sink is on an interior wall. I asked that all but three of the lower cabinets have drawers. We don't have drawers under the gas rangetop or the sink for plumbing reasons, and I have one other non-drawer lower cabinet for very tall pots, etc. I also am very glad I specified soft-close hinges and glides (our primary bedroom is next to the kitchen). I have built-in cubbies in the cabinet above the oven/microwave stack for sheet pans, cutting boards, racks, and trays. I have a pull-out trash drawer next to the sink, outlet strips at the ends of the island, outlets under the cabinets beside the undercabinet lighting, and an outlet with USB ports at my kitchen desk (with built-in bookshelves for my cookbooks above) for charging devices. I made sure that all the lighting is the same color temperature (I specified 3000K), and that every source of lighting is dimmable. This is my first and only kitchen remodel (other than a refresh on our last house to sell it) in 63 years so if it sounds a bit OTT, I've saved my entire life for it 😊. For me and my husband, "the angel's sing" when we walk in our kitchen.

Garrett I really need to send you pictures of my kitchen remodel. Your videos helped me so much. The biggest impact are my inset cabinets which I learned about from watching you. The crazy thing is…we had our cabinets custom designed and the cabinet maker didn’t charge extra for the inset but if I didn’t ask he would not have offered 😘. Thank you!

I want the countertop under the dish cabinets to be wood, so placing dishes on it is quiet, and dropping dishes on it isn’t so likely to break them.

Even if you are not replacing your old cabinets, you can upgrade your base kitchen cabinets and make them more functional by adding rollout drawers. You can make your own or buy pre-made drawers. I had a cabinet man that was building some custom cabinets for me add them to all my open base cabinets except, of course, the kitchen sink cabinet.
I like my refrigerator to be built into a cabinet that includes an overhead cabinet with vertical partitions for large baking pans and sheets, trays, cutting boards, etc. which I can access handily. I have found that making the cabinet the same depth as the base cabinets to be too deep as the pans, trays, etc. can get pushed too far back that makes them unreachable for me so I have a hidden inside cabinet back that keeps the cabinet from being too deep. Base cabinet toe-kicks with rollout drawers can also be handy for items like trays or even for a fold-up step stool to reach up in high cabinets.

This may sound crazy, but what about cutting out the drywall on the two side walls in your bathroom where the vanity will sit? I can't remember if the drywall is 1/4 inch thick or 1/2 inch thick if 1/2 inch, it gives you your inch. If 1/4 inch, ask your contractor if chiseling the 2x4 or 2x6 studs down a quarter of an inch to vanity height will impact the structural integrity. My bet is it won't. Bracing can always be easily and cheaply added if you are super concerned. Lol the ultimate built in cabinetry.

The depth of our sink countertop is 24" and the depth of our range countertop is 28.5" - but the cabinets are all the same depth. Yes, we have that "box" behind the 28.5" countertop. Our splurge item was a down draft exhaust (behind the range and in place of the "box") rather than an overhead exhaust. Because of the down draft exhaust we were able to put the range in a space that doesn't include an outside wall. It's perfect!

Some of us need practical features that aren't as designer approved, like ceiling fans. Go the extra mile. Use your search skills. You can find interesting ceiling fans that don't shout "Home Depot clearance sale" and not pay significantly more than you would for the Home Depot special. Your friends will say wow. Your fan is actually really cool. Where did you find it? And then you can brag on your online shopping skills.

Wonderful creative ideas. There is an area in my kitchen next to an upper cabinet that never looked good to me and it really bugs me. I think my husband has a project this weekend. My favorite luxury item in my kitchen is my Kohler SS double deep bowel apron sink. We stressed over cutting out the front cabinet to install it, one wrong cut and the cabinet is toast. But it’s the best, hides dirty dishes from view. Sometimes one special item can elevate the total look of a space and make it awesome. Thank you for your practical, common sense.

I LOVE all of these ideas. I am currently in the planning stages for a new kitchen (entirely new, it's being added where I currently have a patio). My cabinets are going to the ceiling so I can't vary the height, but I will definitely go with the staggered depths! I just adore the cabinet feet, and I also want a big luxurious hood over the stove. The kitchen at 4:48 is basically my dream kitchen, except I'm not personally fond of all white. One thing we did when remodeling our kitchen was adding shelves made out of granite (same granite as our counters) on the left side of our refrigerator. I keep a few cookbooks there. It’s useful and pretty. We also did do backsplash up to the cabinets and lots of drawers. We had home builders make our inset cabinets. My custom cabinets were cheaper than IKEA. Hi Garrett, Sorry to be tardy today. Lovely video. I dislike counter stools. I have enough room in my kitchen, which flows into the family room to have attached a 4’ x 4” table to the back of my 8’ kitchen island. A steel pedestal base, powder-coated in oil-rubbed bronze, allows for 4 generous chairs. I have a second family room in which we had built a large custom cabinet (with feet) that acts as a “servery”, equipped with a hammered brass bar sink, and and cabinetry-fronted dishwasher, fridge and freezer drawers and microwave, along with uppers and lowers. My door and drawer hardware: black matte pulls with satin brass mounts. I used sintered stone for the counter (impervious to staining and etching) to match the marble slab fireplace in the room, but - horrors! - the slab was only manufactured in a certain width, and was 2” too short. What to do? I asked my stone fabricator if he could source satin brass strips, 1” wide, to insert at either end of the counter. Voila! The problem was solved, and now I have a unique, beautiful and luxurious feature in my already fabulous servery. I think you’d approve. ❤️

On the backsplash, do you believe in the upside down "T" to run the long part all the way up behind the hood to where it meets the ceiling or is that not necessary? In my kitchen, cabinets that house the double wall oven and the refrigerator run to the ceiling and upper cabinets between the two do not. I'm not sure yet on whether I like the center uppers not meeting the ceiling or if a soffit will be considered at some point.
