  • A documentary about the A10 Warthog close air support jet was somehow leaked to the public on social media. The video, “Grunts in the Sky," was withheld from the general public until a Freedom of Information Act request was filed. It features interviews with A-10 pilots, the Air Force personnel who call in air strikes, and the U.S. Army troops they support on the ground.
It is not exactly clear why the video was classified. Pilots and other personnel are referred to only by their call signs or pseudonyms, and the video does not seem to reveal any classified tactics, techniques, or procedures.
“Grunts in the Sky” features interviews with A-10 pilots who explain how they made the decision to fly the A-10, and what it feels like to support troops in contact with the enemy-even hearing the crack of enemy gunshots over the radio while coordinating an air strike. It also interviews Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs), Air Force personnel that embed with ground troops and are trained to work with pilots to place bombs on target. Finally, U.S. Army troops describe what it’s like to work with an A-10 flying overhead.
The video itself features some spectacular footage of A-10 Warthogs doing their thing, including low-level flight and firing the 30-millimeter GAU-8/A nose-mounted gatling gun at targets on the ground.
The documentary takes its name from a JTAC who describes A-10 pilots as a breed apart from other Air Force pilots, having an outlook more like their ground-pounder counterparts, making them “grunts in the sky.”

This has been one of my favourite aircraft since I first learned about it as a kid in the early 80s. Its been in service since the year of my birth in the 70s. I remember being sooooo deeply disappointed when I found out that we didnt have them in Australia.

If you somehow got caught in that F100 "Sabre Dance" it was always a one way ticket, and it didn't take long for every Sabre driver to know it.

I have had the pleasure to attend many, many air shows over the years and I can say that the A-10 has a distinct sound even before those tree trunk sized rounds start buzzing out so fast it sounds like ripping fabric that’s 5 inches thick and 300 yards long. But hey…who cares about what it looks like right ? Let’s face it….the guys and gals in the Air Force don’t call the B-52 the “BUFF” just for the sake of it, LOL. Plus they are extremely good and effective at what they do and why change a tried and true design. I’m not sure about the A-10 Warthog but I am almost positive that I heard the B-52…especially with it’s new iteration of engines, from I think GE….but regardless they are going to upgrade the cockpit navigation systems and the engines, obviously, and potentially other facets of the 52 also, but don’t quote me on the other items. But it’s proven itself to be an important and still very relevant component of the US Military might and other countries see the US fly them 52’s close to their airspace and it frightening thing for them to see. But getting back to the point, I heard the ole’ BUFF could almost certainly be a extremely vital cog in our military even out as far as possibly the 2050’s which would put the jet in the 100 year + service life and that’s something not many aircraft can attest to. Heck, let the A-10 and B-52 be mildly attractive, we also have the sexiest and most capable aircraft too. The B-2 looks like a Bald Eagle from a profile perspective and that is out of this world. The Raptor is badass looking and the F-35 and we can’t forget about the F-15 Eagle or the beautiful F-16 Fighting Falcon/ Viper. I can continue believe me and I am sure anyone out there who admires and revels in our technological progress and beauty already knows that we could all write a 15 paragraph essay on our favorite US jets and helicopters, but I’m not even going to get into that. Oh yeah…I can’t end this without giving props to the legendary Kelly Johnson and the gorgeous SR-71 Blackbird and it was an iconic and beautiful piece of machinery. If anyone actually read all of this then thank you.

The A10's fierce reputation reminds me of the Stuka dive bombers with sirens from ww2. The sounds are known & feared intentionally. Anyone fortunate enough not to get tagged with all that freedom flying out of an A10, has definitely left the battle space. 🎉

Close Air Support. Soldiers on the ground need grunt in the sky. Front Line Infantry are not multi-role fighters. Close Air Support cannot be multi-role either. A-10 is a flying M2/M3. More mobile; able to cover a wide area quickly. In many situations one A-10 is more efficient than anything else. "...but it is so old...". Not really, not as old as the Joint Chiefs of Staff and they are still relevant. A-10 production must continue.
Pilots in the A-10 are grunts . They are part of the team on the ground. Air Force? I think the Mission is really Flying Ground Force. The A-10 Mission is critical to ground force support. The Air and Navy Armed Forces will gain air superiority. The Infantry and the A-10 will gain ground superiority'. We don't have enough A-10.
The above editorial was written by someone who is a proponent of the A-10 Program. His opinion is not necessarily that of the decision makers. No decision makers will be harmed without A-10.

How many of these did we give to the taliban when up and left? Please tell me zero. But TBH I don't believe the corruption of the military complex to not try and justify the need for more and more military equipment 😢

    • @Dronescapes

Do you think that staying there forever would have been a good idea?
By the way, the order (an atrocious deal made with the Taliban) was made by the Trump Administration in Feb. 2020 (on the 29th).
It also included the release of thousands of Taliban terrorists and fighter, and the deadline was set in early 2021, which happened to be under the Biden administration.
When the new administration took over they realized the there was absolutely no plan whatsoever on both sides (Afghan and U.S. side), as the previous administration signed the agreement in Doha to much fanfare, but had not worked on any plan at all.
The Biden administration delayed that deal by a few months, but as we all know, it became a disaster, which has deep roots in the Trump administration.
Perhaps, if the previous administration had worked on it for almost a year, it would have been less disastrous.
Needless to say the Taliban could care less about the Feb. 2020 agreement, and went on to also release all sort of terrorists.

Thank you Joe B. for taking Afghanistan back to the 10th century.....

    • @Dronescapes
      @Dronescapes  3 місяці тому +2

Perhaps you are not aware that he followed a "deal" penned by his predecessor.
Here is a reminder, in case you missed it: "...Over his last 11 months in office, President Trump ordered a series of drawdowns of U.S. troops. By June 2020, President Trump reduced U.S. troops in Afghanistan to 8,600. In September 2020, he directed a further draw down to 4,500..."
And to further explore what happened after Trump left office: "...the 2 outgoing Administration provided no plans for how to conduct the final withdrawal or to evacuate Americans and Afghan allies. Indeed, there were no such plans in place when President Biden came into office, even with the agreed upon full withdrawal just over three months away..."
And just to further clarify: "The Trump administration in February 2020 negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban that excluded the Afghan government, freed 5,000 imprisoned Taliban soldiers, and set a date certain of May 1, 2021, for the final withdrawal.
The Trump administration kept to the pact, reducing U.S. troop levels from about 13,000 to 2,500, even though the Taliban continued to attack Afghan government forces and welcomed al-Qaeda terrorists into the Taliban leadership. Biden delayed the May 1 withdrawal date that he inherited, but ultimately his administration pushed ahead with a plan to withdraw by Aug. 31..."
Here is the original agreement for you to review: www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Agreement-For-Bringing-Peace-to-Afghanistan-02.29.20.pdf
It was signed in Signed in Doha, Qatar on February 29, 2020.
I am quite sure that both President Trump and President Biden wanted to end that war, but the conditions were dictated by President Trump.
You can also find plenty of videos of the official signing by the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan.
