Respect to the background singers! When just listening to this song their voices are the parts that get "stuck in your head". Great musicians. John Smith nailed the song writing for this. Valerie Day is a beautiful singer and "front-man". But, this song would not have been the hit without the background singers! Together, they made a perfect 80's hit!
I just never could get enough of that song! Even now, it takes me back to a very confusing time. I made a 180 degree change in careers. I went form about 16 or 17 years as a 1st class machinist, to training and getting my tractor trailer license. I became an OTR/48 from the next 5 years before going back to machine shops. In fact, I tended to use machine shops as a 'fall-back' job whenever I needed to get some money beyond the smaller checks I got from other jobs. "I Can't Wait" was hitting the charts hard by the time I got my first OTR job, which would take me out on the road for 3 months at a time. It was the beginning of the end of my first marriage.
