I opened 3 boxes of 89 Fleer back in 1989. I managed to get one of the Ripken cards with the obscenities on the bat knob. I also have the black box version of the card. I have heard the version with the white box on the bat knob is one of the hardest to find. My buddy also pulled one. I still have the card in my Fleer card holder book as well as ever card I ever collected when I started collecting them in 1971.
I was 10 years old when these cards came out and was at the height of collecting cards. Me and my buddies went nuts when we found that Ripken, we couldn't believe it. I bought a cello box of these a few months ago on ebay and got the original f.f. error card. Great memories!
Correction at around the 8:50 mark, when 1989 Fleer came out, the Ripken card came out and was like a 50 cent card. Billy had hype only due to him being Cal’s brother. In 1991, Cal was a superstar. It took several months for the world at large to spot the bat message and another month for the articles to publish about the card. Then after that, there was a craze. Probably it got hot around March-ish.
I remember pulling the Billy Ripken card when I was younger. I liked it because, being from near Boston, it had Fenway Park in its background. As time went on and I got into Beckett books, I saw there was a Billy Ripken Error card from 1989, I checked my collection and never knew I had the F Face card which was the error until I saw it a few years later. One of the best!
I have to get a copy of that Ripken card. I can remember being a kid and nobody actually knew what it said. It was just the "expletive card". So much history in that card. Made an ordinary set kind of cool. Great video.
I must have ripped hundreds of 89 Fleer and 89 Donruss hunting for Griffey Jr RC's. The memories I have of opening packs looking for Jr cards are STILL some of my fondest. I still have every Jr I ever collected from 89-97, when I finally got out of collecting. Those were the days!
i love all the great baseball card information that you share while opening packs. you are by far my favorite to watch on youtube. thanks so much for all that you do.
I know it's not worth much and not his best rookie, but I just love the JR rookie card for 89' Fleer. Just a beautiful looking card, oh and I finally found my JR card from his minor league set.
Love these Throwback Thursday videos! My father was a card collector and I inherited/continued his collection after he passed. All these cards remind me of his collection that I often look at and think of him and the huge baseball fan that he was, just like myself. Keep up the great videos and card collecting, Erik!
Really enjoying these throwback Thursdays! Always thought opening old boxes would be a cool segment to your channel. Keep up the good work! I remember opening several of these as a kid.
I remember being about 10 years old when my brother and me used to buy all 1989 packs looking for Griffey JR card and we come across the Ripken "F-FACE" card. LOL we were laughing are butts off. Over that year we prob. pulled 10+ of the FF cards, also the black, and the white edited version. Good times, love your channel, little by little you are getting me back into collecting again. Thank You!
Hey Erik. God bless you. Don't know if you noticed but at 17:54 you pulled a Lee Smith and then a Harold Baines back to back. And their both in the Hall of Fame this year. I thought that was so cool! Love the videos Erik. ve the pack opening special touch. Hahaha.
i was born in 81 and 89 was my peak year in collecting cards man those was good times with my dad. we set up at card shows. thanks for these videos really bring back good memories
1989 and the hunt for Griffey brings back so many fond memories for me I probably opened 2000 packs of Donruss and 500 packs of UD looking for Jr I still have every single Jr card that I personally pulled in 1989. I have about 30 Donruss and 4 UD that will be passed down to my kids. Man I love these old school breaks!!!
When that Ripken error came about and was all the rage..in my city i located one last box..at a little bit of a premium..but not bad..opened the entire box down to final pack and hadnt got it..very last pack i pulled it..it was a whew moment on that one,lol
Good buy. $60. I remember going to the card store asking if they got Upper deck, like I did early in the baseball season. They said no but they got an early edition box of Fleer. I bought like 10 packs for $5. The first pack had the Griffey. And the last pack I opened had the Bill Ripken. My friend noticed it. All the kids in the store went nuts and the store employees wanted to buy it. I kept it and the store started opening boxes themselves until they found one themselves and let all us kids have the common cards.
Great idea with the throwback. I restarted the hobby last month after a 24 year hiatus. I actually liked the grey background especially when comparing some other Fleer years.
TBS and WGN. You got a lot of Cubs and Braves games in the 80s on cable. I would watch them just to watch games even though I was and am a Brewers fan. Really enjoy having the option to watch most games these days. Also got a kick out of the lack of power for Belliard comments- I used to sarcastically comment in my younger years that those players couldn’t hit home runs if they where allowed to hit from second base.
There are at least 11 different variations of the Randy Johnson 1989 Fleer card: Full blacked-out background. Black "box" around sign - reddish tint. Black "box" around sign - white circle visible (where cowboy hat is on sign). Full blacked-out background, green "oval" or circle visible in blacked-out area. Black "bar" through the word Marlboro on sign - reddish tint. Marlboro sign visible, slightly darkened - reddish tint (previously though of as the 1st or "clearest" version). Black "scribble" through the word Marlboro on sign - reddish tint. Marlboro sign visible, slightly darkened - green tint. Black "bar" through the word Marlboro on sign - green tint. Black "scribble" through the word Marlboro on sign - green tint. Marlboro sign visible, bright and clear.

Man I remember that billy Ripken card. People were paying $100 per card. They would watch over your shoulder at the shows and see what you pulled. It was the most crazy 1989 set out there at the time
I bought a box from a card shop years ago. Got the complete set with the exception of the Griffey rookie card. The card shop owner needed some random card to complete the set I got a couple of them so he traded me straight up at the time my random card to complete his set and a Griffey Jr. to complete mine.
Word has it that if the case box has the number 90171 or lower chances are good that there is a Ripkin FF error card not censored in the boxes. You have to go by the case number not the box the packs are in.
Nothing wrong with opening these packs. I went yesterday to a few shops and found one of them who had an open box of these. Asked if they had anymore in the back but the baseball guy(multiple employees) was not there. It’s just fun opening up these. I did buy a a box of 89 bowman(most likely searched) the wax on the packs wasn’t very good, no Griffey, who knows got it cheap though probably why! Still fun!
I was in 3 different auctions for the billy ripken card, PSA graded and they all sold for a lot more than I expected. Now I know what to budget for next time I have play money
That Billy Ripken craze at the time was like trying to find the last Willy Wonka ticket.
I remember there was even a peoples court case surrounding that card.
Hilarious man

The memories, I remember finding 89 fleer cards at Costco in the hood. They were the first release, to bad they are gone.
Nice cards. Glad to see the Griffey Jr RC pulled. Thanks for sharing!

Love the wax packs. Nostalgic look and feel. Thanks for the video.

Great cards! Some great rookies and HOF cards!
Ahhh, 89 Fleer Griffey Jr ALWAYS followed Fermin... ALWAYS, racks, cellos, didn't matter. I found TONS of them that way !!!

Nice to see some older cards
Great video, I like these cards. They seem a bit better than the other wax stuff from that era.
Totally dig seeing the throw backs from our generation lol, great job Jabs!
I know it's not worth much if anything, but you completely skipped over Bo Jackson @ 15:00 without talking about his greatness.
Thanks for the throwback...
Awesome video, I have one of the Ripken error cards.
Nice vid! Reminds me of my younger collecting days!
Nice break! I just got a box of these cards for xmas. Pulled all the notable cards but the Billy ripkin. Thanks for sharing!

I started collecting cards about the same time you did. Love your videos like always
Something like a 1993 Upper Deck would be really neat. I remember ripping through these looking for what felt like special insert cards at the time.
I'd love to see a box of 1985 Fleer or even get in on a case break of it. I always thought those were the coolest cards and loved the colors.
Big fan of throwback Thursday
Awesome going old school!
I remember putting this set together with my brother. Good times. I cannot remember if we had the black or white box on the Bill Ripken.
once again, AWESOME break video! really enjoy your videos, Hope you had a great Christmas!

I pulled the blackbox and f*ckface versions of Ripken back in the day. Really lucky to pull the latter!
