actually the game is abandonware and its quite easy to find a download online which has both expansions, and there mostly is a really small patch included that makes it online-playable again (player-count is still quite high). missinforming review..
@@DWTerminator Back in 2014 they made the game free for everyone to download. You can't even technically pirate it anymore because first, it's abandonware, and second, it's free.
I don't know where that "it's aged poorly" angle comes from. I think the graphics look rather good for their time and still hold up decently well today. Of course it's not going to compare to anything recent, but it still is rather pleasing to look at for what it is. As for technical issues, the only ones I experienced are crashing on the main menu screen sometimes in Windows 10, which is understandable given when it came out. In game though, I never experienced any bugs or issues. It's easy to get 1942 at 1080p today, without the weird HUD issues you were seeing, and patching in 3rd party multiplayer isn't terribly difficult either. You may be surprised to know there's still full servers for this game 24/7, which I'd say is a pretty good testament to its timelessness and how much most people still enjoy it. You neglected to mention one of the biggest selling points of this (and every BF) game: those "Battlefield moments." We're so used to seeing cool things happening in scripted events, especially in WW2 games. Battlefield 1942 was pretty novel in that every cool thing happening on screen was actually being done by a real player. When you blow up a tank or a plane, that happens entirely naturally. You weren't predestined to have that cool thing happen every time, yet it happened anyway, which makes it so much more rewarding and meaningful when it does happen. Sadly, although 1942 retains an active playerbase, its current playerbase in 2020 does not really understand how the team play is supposed to work. The people playing it are the same as the COD converts playing Battlefield 1. Battlefield has always been a series whose experience relies entirely on how the other players behave, which is why your enjoyment with it is going to be inconsistent, depending on who else is in the server. These days though, it's pretty rare to find a team working in unison. Most people just run for the tank or plane or CP/flag on their own, so instead of seeing giant armies clashing together, it's more like you by yourself walking through empty battlefields till you finally reach a flag where one guy just spawned in, get killed, and repeat. Another major issues is the respawn time. There shouldn't be any respawn time in the offline instant action, let alone a staggering 30 seconds before respawning. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to mod that to get rid of it or reduce it, but at least it's not anywhere near as long in online matches.
Back in the day i used to play this at 1600x1200 at 75Hz on an LG F700P 17" CRT monitor with a Radeon 9800PRO and Athlon Barton XP with a gig of RAM. There is a few updates you could do with this, there is some erronous info in your review. There is a patch to fix the missing Gamespy server. You can now play 256 players on one map, and you could always run it at higher resolutions.
A. C. Neal It doesn’t have to be perfectly accurate because it never will be. But it does need to be accurate enough to be convincing to the average person. It might not satiate a history buff, but it’s pretty believable as a WW2 game. Seeing lesbian feminists cyborgs taking out a building with one rifle shot is retarded. That’s not just historical inaccuracy. It’s completely immersion-breaking.
My man 210% O.G. DW "The Terminator" just went back in time to kill this game to death before it was even born! Can't wait for the badass asfuq sequel, "Battlefield 2: Judgement Day."
I appreciate the fact that you aren't being biased. I played Battlefield 1942 as a kid and I feel like way too many people look at it with nostalgia glasses. It was a fun game! but Medal of Honor and the first Call of Duty absolutely eclipsed it in terms of polish. Even Return to Castle Wolfenstein was better. Best thing about Battlefield 1942 were the vehicles, which neither MOH, COD (unless you had the United Offensive expansion pack) or RTCW had. Vehicles is where Battlefield 1942 100% shines. Just like you stated.
As someone who played this game when it was current on a 56k dial up connection and a very high end (for the time) pc. This game ran fine and I can't remember having any issues that where drastic or out of the ordinary for the era it was.
Hate for the nostalgia blinding but i prefer 1942 more. Probably because it was my first WW2 game on PC and I like the timeline more than the Vietnam timeline.
I've lost count of the number of times I've played through the D-Day landings, Carentan, and so forth. WWII is so incredibly played out I even have a hard time going back and playing the WWII games I actually *liked*, let alone new ones.
+DWTerminator I know, there's plenty of other events they could do in that war if they wanted to put some effort. Maybe a full german campaign but that probably would "offend" peopel lol. I actually prefer futuristic type shooters, but few do it well. Just waiting for the new unreal tournament to be done.
+DukeoftheAges i whould love a ww2 multiplayer game with out the stupit and anoying level up and close combat bf3 and 4 are broken and stupit games i want somting like this game i have to point out that im 19 and kinda mised the ww2 flood u talked aboat
Just recently downloaded this game though a torrent and i played some online matches though gametracker i can say that there quite few people still playing this game.
How different is flying an air vehicle in each BF game? I only played 1942, BC2 and 3. I can fly planes in 1942, heli in BC2 but never able to shoot anything. BF3 air vehicles's control is the worst for me, flying with mouse or keyboard is both clunky. How is air vehicles's control in everyone's best BF game - BF2? My friend said BFVN had the best control for both heli and jet. Is it true?
BF2's heli controls we're pretty decent as well. Though I'm never able to hit anything :P. It's still very hard to aim towards targets effectively. Though I've never been able to fly a jet in BF2.
That's still no excuse for such wild inaccuracies as having the Japanese using semi-automatic rifles as their standard while the Americans get Lee-Enfields, for some baffling reason.
Hello. I am currently making a retrospective of the Star Wars Battlefront series. Part of it will, of course, address the similarities between these games and the likely inspiration that Battlefield had with Battlefront's development, and how the series had diverged since then. If and when I ever convert the review into video format, I would like to include your footage and likely some of your commentary regarding mechanics. So, I am wondering: may I have your permission? You will, of course, be credited for any footage used.
I can look past the graphics, i can look past the gunplay, i can look past the fact that many things in this game are archaic. But one thing i can't look past is that it might just be the most historically inaccurate WW2 game of all time.

Just because it was abandoned doesn't make it legal to pirate it.
Thanks for the info! Gonna have to check that out!
would buy it if i could
but if they wont let me...
@@DWTerminator Back in 2014 they made the game free for everyone to download. You can't even technically pirate it anymore because first, it's abandonware, and second, it's free.
Correction: it *was* free. It isn't anymore. That was a temporary promo they did.
Battlefield 1942 was AWESOME!! I remember back in college I used to stay until 4-5am playing it...
Ah nostalgia. Your review will not hurt my perfect score :P

Further, i ran it at maxed out settings, and it didn't run janky as hell either. Ran perfectly. Still does now.
People watching Battlefield V trailer: "reeee I want classic Battlefield. Muh historically accurate."
Battlefield 1942: "Hold my beer"
It's more accurate than the cartoonish crap in Battlefield V, at least.
A. C. Neal It doesn’t have to be perfectly accurate because it never will be. But it does need to be accurate enough to be convincing to the average person. There’s a mod that you install that adds multiplayer servers, and they’re actually quite populated.
64 players was pretty high for 2002, but in 2001 Tribes 2 had support for above 100 players.
As someone who played this game when it was current on a 56k dial up connection and a very high end (for the time) pc. This game ran fine and I can't remember having any issues that where drastic or out of the ordinary for the era it was.
It ran like garbage you mean like your review
Good video DW. Have you thought about doing a redux on your KOTOR reviews?
I'm not accepting input on which reviews get reduxed. I probably will do the KotOR games at some point though.
Believe I just go on Game tracker to look for a server and copy paste the IP in Add Server to play online xD
You can definitely do that.
1:46 that's not even mentioning Battlefield: Vietnam though. I have the same collection, and I couldn't get that one to work properly.
BFV works better than 1942 actually.
+DWTerminator
Still probably wouldn't go back to it.
Hate for the nostalgia blinding but i prefer 1942 more. Probably because it was my first WW2 game on PC and I like the timeline more than the Vietnam timeline.
I still think it's fun. The Origin version it's free and also has fewer glitches.
there is a community patch that allows multyplayer
+Dusan Rakic (MIXERDUST) and it supports widescreen resolutions
I played the Batlefield 1942 mods: Forgotten hope and Desert Combat
really cranking these out
That tends to happen when you're producing videos roughly a week before they're going live.
Love this game I play it more than crysis
Great video. I will not just say you're a cod lover, but you are a little harsh on battlefield.😊
I still play this game online. Been with me since I was a kid. Runs incredibly smooth on my windows 10 computer compared to my win 7/8.1 one
slovene ball yes you can, and it runs mostly smooth with minimal crashes from my experience. Dunno whats up with that though
@slovene ball It works, try it yourself :)
You had some pretty weird experiences with this game, then. Granted, I never played it online, but I never, EVER, had any problems, either.
Would love a modern version of a ww2 battlefield. But don't know if i can trust them not to ruin it.
WWII games need to die. Permanently.
+DWTerminator Well they're more interesting than modern warfare type games. I guess we can go full american civil war haha.
I've lost count of the number of times I've played through the D-Day landings, Carentan, and so forth. WWII is so incredibly played out I even have a hard time going back and playing the WWII games I actually *liked*, let alone new ones.

Just picked the game up and yes it is a bit dated, but still one of the best fps games ever made. Oh and yes it's better than call of duty 1+2.
Didn’t this game come out in 2000?
Nope. 2002.
Just recently downloaded this game though a torrent and i played some online matches though gametracker i can say that there quite few people still playing this game.
Will you re-review old call of Duty games?
Again, not accepting input on which games get reduxed. Only a few of the CoD games are getting reduxes.
Well your original CoD review is almost 10 years old
+Jayson Neal Yeah obviously only really old reviews would need a redux
Complaining and complaining and complaining, yikes.
Do they have any WW1 games that are actually good? WW2 is old, I want WW1 which is... Well it is old also, but in a different way.
I've been told Verdun is pretty good but I haven't played it myself yet.
Verdun is an alright game, but it's a bit grindy for new weapons.

BFV has the best flight controls in that "they are actually something vaguely resembling usable."
What about BF2's?
BF2's heli controls we're pretty decent as well. Though I'm never able to hit anything :P. It's still very hard to aim towards targets effectively. Though I've never been able to fly a jet in BF2.
you got this running? 0.0
Barely.
My problem with the game is bad aiming, a few historical inaccuracies, too much distant fog, terrible AI, and terrible graphics.
+Kim Jong-Il yeah true lol
That's still no excuse for such wild inaccuracies as having the Japanese using semi-automatic rifles as their standard while the Americans get Lee-Enfields, for some baffling reason.
+DWTerminator and also the Japanese using MG42s WTF?
+Kim Jong-Il yeah, I have a hard copy from 2005 here, but I don't know how to mod it.
+Kim Jong-Il wish I could figure out how to mod it though :(
You should do a redux review of half life 1 and 2.

RevanBladeZ the most inaccurate WW2 is battlefield V
when i would bee the a ea employer i would give the servers to difrent companies like gamespy.when you like my idea please make a comment
