  • Al Lewis' role as Grampa on television's "The Munsters" has ensured him permanence in the American collective consciousness. Although he has performed in every entertainment medium in this century, television has permanently associated Al Lewis with Grampa Munster - so much so that actor and character have become inseparable. In 1986, Al Lewis opened Grampa's, a restaurant where the public was provided with a collective brush with fame. Admirers could see Al Lewis up close and in person - with perfect reception. "Al Lewis in the Flesh" observes the American pastime of celebrity adulation, revealing a man to whom performing is second nature.
Filmed in 1991 - 1992 and completed in 1993, this film was my senior documentary thesis film at SUNY Purchase in New York.

I grew up in Queens. I remember traveling into Greenwich Village on a few occasions with friends to eat at Grampa's. On at least two of those occasions, Mr. Al Lewis was present and greeting all the customers. He was a great guy to meet.

2:20 *"Whenever you may be listening to this"*
Little did he know at the time of that recording that we would be listening to it in 2022

This should have SO many more views... Hope this stays up forever, should be on Internet Archive too.
Al Lewis seems like a guy that never wanted to retire, wanted to stay busy and help others.

Yeah I feel if he was a real vampire and could live hundreds of years he still would be busy hanging around his restaurant and making appearances and of course smoking cigars.

Al Lewis. One class act. They don’t make them like him anymore.

I was 6 years old when this came out and I would have loved to have met this man and said thank you for making our childhood all the more special because he was everyone's grandpa and Uncle Herman 🌹

Him and people of his age are a national treasure, they lived thru the most hardest times in america, and lived to tell the tale. Of the greats of the era. God bless his soul...

I hate the fact I just discovered this...Met Al twice in the mid 70s, he was extremely kind with his time and spoke fondly of THE MUNSTERS at the time. I have a hand letter from him where he answered my questions about the show...He said his favourite episode was CURING HERMAN'S COLD...fine except no episode was titled that. .I think he meant the episode where Herman had a sinus problem..This shows he did not re watch the shows he did...when I first met him he pulled a 8x10 of Grandpa out for me, again at the time he was still proud of his work on the show....I guess as the years rolled by he tired a bit of the identification of just that one character, can you blame him ? Met Frank Gorshin multible times in the 70s and he loved his association with The Riddler...but as the years rolled on he clearly tired of being asked to do the laugh. Anyway, wonderful to see him at the restaurant you captured a moment in time..Thank you.

I love this. I remember that this was a Mob fronted joint. That they agreed and worked it out with Al to put his name and face on it for few sheckles. He ate for free there. When he would hold court with the folks for Stern or whatever he would collect the money from them all and pocket the cash. Hahhaa
