The craziest tarantula story I've heard from a keeper was several years ago. I was chatting with an acquaintance, and at some point I mentioned that I had pet tarantulas. The acquaintance had apparently killed her pet tarantula when she saw it molting and intervened because she thought that "another tarantula" had gotten into the enclosure and was eating her pet. 🤯

Thanks for sharing. Honestly, it’s so sad when you see incapable caretakers with pets of any kind, knowing their level of care being received is subpar. I volunteer at a vet clinic and there are two tarantula stories I have. One is from a couple that tried to put a love tarantula up her(the lady) behind hole for some kinky foreplay idea after some drinking. The second was a lady that had read about what temperature her specific tarantula needed in order to thrive. She didn’t know how to get the tarantula’s temperature to know if she had the set up for her accurate or not accurate. She used one of those like meat thermometers and inserted it inside the Tarantula’s butt end of the abdomen by the spinnerets, to get a temperature. In both instances, the Tarantula died. When I heard them speaking I was a mix of sad, angry, and disbelieving how stupid their decisions had actually been. That’s it though. They only two Tarantula weird stories I have. We did have a few Ts come in for normal things like lethargic and not eating.. but it was/is very uncommon! Mostly we just see cats and dogs.

He would sleep on my shoulder, or just hang out there while I walked around doing whatever. The only thing that really sucks about keeping rats, is their short life span. 3-5 years doesn’t seem fair for such a great little pet!!!

Some of these stories remind me of that person on Instagram who has a juvi OBT that they handle on a regular basis, and claim that regular socialization will make even old world spiders "tame-able", and even when they got bit, and posted the bite happening on IG, they claimed the reason the bite happened was because they had gone too long between handling sessions. I sold some baby OBT’s I had bred at home at my family’s local pet store. A young lady came in and bought one, and informed me she was going to “train” it from a young age to tolerate being handled and make it “tame”.
I informed her how ridiculous and dangerous that is considering the species, informed her there wasn’t a way or making it tame. She took my advice and told me, in my 10+ years experience, I didn’t know what I was talking about, and she had “tamed” all her tarantulas to enjoy being handled. Can’t fix stupid sometimes.

21:27 On people food: A couple of years ago, I put a baby carrot in the enclosure of my _Brachypelma emilia_ to lure out a dubia roach that was hiding. After my tarantula finished with the roach, I looked in the enclosure and noticed that she had the carrot in her mouth. I was sure she'd drop the carrot once she figured out it was not a bug, but she had it in her mouth for over two hours, and when she was done, the carrot was at least 50% smaller.
She has a full water dish and had already eaten at least one roach, so I am not sure what about the carrot made her want to eat it. It may have smelled like roaches, because I removed it from the roaches' feeding dish. If she touched the carrot and caused it to roll, that may have triggered an initial prey response.

I'm only a few months into this, but it seems easy to understand that these animals are very different than mammals or birds. It's kind of disrespectful to the spider to apply human characteristics to a creature that does not have them, nor wants them.

Hi Tom, newbie here! I have commented before recently & got a reply, thanks for that!😉 I just wanted to say I feel you, I'm new to spiders but I've been rescuing, trapping and neutering cats for a very long time, 120+ cats worth. (I've lost count) I run into the same thing. People who don't know better telling me that what I do is wrong and why, or people telling me their unrealistic ideals on curbing the stray cat population, such as ensuring NOBODY in any neighborhood ever pities them enough to feed them or making sure each and every neighbor keeps their garbage tighter than Fort Knox. Yes both of those have been suggested more than once! Let's just starve them out and hope for the worst!?

I've had a very hard time naming spiders so I do it very sparingly too. My first T that molted out female was named Seven because when I got her she was missing a leg. (I know they grow legs back, my mom wanted me to name it that, it's still a bit silly). Now I'm not someone that believes in luck really, but when she got that leg back and I checked the molt to find out she was female her name stuck even harder lol.

I'm on my first T and I absolutely adore them. Theyre a sling. I dont handle them despite the fact that they seem to have no fear of me and tolerate me cleaning and watering the enclosure around them. I dont handle them because that's stressful, because it's dangerous, because I respect them. When they get older would I attempt to handle it, sure. Would I do it regularly, no, would I push it and make them let me handle them, no. My love for spiders is loving watching and caring for them. Do I wish to handle one of my spiders, yes. But I recognize it's completely selfish because I find them adorable. And I would only ever handle them when it's safe and if it doesn't seem to stress them out much. If that means never handling them outside of rehousing or having them touch me with a leg accidentally, id be perfectly happy.

I can see how frustrating the last one especially was. I do wonder in a big enough enclosure if you could possibly house a fossorial and an arboreal without much danger; I wouldn't do it (I know better) but it did make me think a bit as they would be unlikely to ever come across each other.

I have always wondered when I have been sat in the park, watching a T. Blondi wander past wearing a sun hat and glasses, munching a hot dog, and whilst on its mobile phone to it's cardiologist, saying 'Hey doc! What can I say I can't resist the mustard!'

Tom brilliant podcast, i think ive heard it all now, God help those spiders 🕷. As you said Tom some people won't listen to reason. At the end of the day, you have to do what's right for your spiders 🕷 and not for yourself. "Spiders don't enjoy movies."
Lol. Clearly. For one thing they can't see the screen. Though, I am curious just how sensitive their hairs are to air vibrations. I've heard it compared to "having your body covered in eardrums", which makes me wonder just how much information can they discern from airborne sounds.

The most bizarre thing for me was someone dressing up their spider. In my experience with dogs (I had dogs for 50 years) they don't like to be dressed up neither even something like a raincoat. A lot of people humanise their animals and it's not fair to the animal. Thank you for educating people like me it's much appreciated. Greetings from the UK

THANKS TOM! Great topics. I used to work 8 years independant pet retail, and ran into so many similar moments. At the end of the day, the only comments I defend these days are that all pet shops are trash and do wrong. We, and 2 others here in Virginia (Inc FNT new storefront) did/do right, but I've seen endless sad enclosures at other shops. I hope the rhetoric of "all pet shops" are evil turns into "most don't do right" some day.

I think the sleeping with the tarantula one is funny because I’m kinda guilty of this. I didn’t have a bare tarantula on my chest but back from around 2014-2016 I did keep my g porteri’s enclosure on the massive futon I slept on. She was my only T at the time and I guess I enjoyed the company since those were really tough times. I knew she had no attachment or enjoyment out of it, but still. Pretty dumb looking back on it but it’s funny how she really helped me by just sitting there. I didn’t have anyone. Just had this little rose hair that felt nothing for me. I had her from 2012-2020, she was old when I got her. I miss her every day. I don’t think I’d ever do it again, but I like to laugh at my naive 14 year old self.

I don’t think…no, I know she doesn’t care about a name. She actually doesn’t care about my human world at all….but I love her little spider world and trying to learn all I can so she can live a healthy long life. Naming is more for human comfort. I agree with you the spider cares not about us, other than after awhile associating their keeper with food….and too much light, vibration, etc…so we are more of an annoyance with an occasional benefit….lol. Thank you for your vids. Between you and 2 other main T UA-camrs I am learning so much.
Some of the email stories you shared, I can’t help but think they were written by those with mental health issues. Was the woman's bed spider a rosie? And did she say that she would only put her down when she was showering? Because I remember having read that in some forum (arachnoboards?) about 20 years ago and I doubt that there are many more cases like this.
But I too had the idea that Habitrails could make perfect enclosures (just haven't tried it yet) after reading a study about the metabolism of P. canderides where they connected their container to an exploration area like this (which the majority of them readily used). That most T's DO feel a strong need to explore unfamiliar environment (collecting important information about their environment is not necessarily a waste of energy) can be easily proven: leave their enclosures open over night and look how many of them are still in there next morning. :D
But I was disappointed by the dressed-up spiders: I had to press on pause because I laughed so hard for minutes, imagining T's with eight-legged jeans and cute little boots, and then it was just hats and sunglasses, how boring! :D

Mine all have their Halloween costumes early this year, and I’ll be shopping for some Christmas ones soon. I only sleep with my 3 Aphonopelma Chalcodes, because there’re the most docile ones. My Ball Python sleeps with me to, but he’s usually wrapped around my neck. I think he may get chilly at night. Oh and high temperatures DO in fact promote growth rate. I keep mine under heat lamps, and the temperature stays around 95 degrees. My Brachypelma hamorii has grown from a quarter size sling, to now about 4” in just 8 months. 🤣🤣🤣🤣. In all seriousness, great video as usual, and you must have the patience of a saint!!! Hope you got a little laugh, and to others who might read this, IT WAS ONLY A JOKE!!! As a long time follower of Tom, his videos are EXACTLY the way I keep mine. I’ll usually look up his videos of a species I’m interested in, or just bought, so I know I’m keeping them RIGHT!!! Everything that I say, he immediately follows up with "oh that's not how google says it should be done" or "the care sheets online says this". He was keeping tarantulas for 2 weeks and he came to me for help knowing I had experience but he didn't listened to a word I said. I immediately blocked him on social media. I was pissed 😂

THAT is the most frustrating thing ever. I will have people ask me advice, and then tell me that I'm wrong. Not to be a jerk, but who contacted who? Which of us has the experience? That woman's poor tarantulas....

@@TomsBigSpiders VERY frustrating. Like I've literally been caring for and breeding tarantulas for years and you've done it for 2 weeks at least consider that 🤦‍♂️

"You can't fix stupid" Thumbs WAY up for "hanky-panky" at 43:23, lol... been a while since I heard that phrase... OMG, I've LOVE it if my G. pulchra would come when called ! "Hey, Nyx ! My tarantula, reptile tip is feeding crickets and meal worms on tropical fish flakes because fish flakes is very high in vitamin D3 which is something the crickets lack of and I also feed crickets on home grown fruit and vegetables that I wash...
Spiders should be treated like fish human does awesome set up and human put spider in the enclosure and human(s) look

I got my first jumping spider November October 2021 and I called my little friend Chance and he/she is alive and eats out of my hand and he lives in a 2 foot high plastic vivarium that is a foot wide and plastic plants is in the enclosure with thin fake vines and I stuck a foot high piece of slate to the inside of the enclosure and spider likes to explore, ok the spider goes to top at the night but at daytime when am reading a book or on my phone in my bedroom Chance is always watching me....
I got him a friend called Hope but don't think it's wise to introduce Chance to Hope, Hope is a year old aswell and in similar enclosure as Chance so I can another jumping spider and coz the jumping spider is black n white I named the spider Ying Yang and with Put in being 69 and China's leader 69 and President Moon 69 and Queen Elizabeth died at 96 and David Attenbourough is 96 it definately year of Ying Yang...
I then got a Velvet spider to look after I named Chubby he/she not eaten for a whole year but earlier this month the spider had 3 bluebottle flies, 2 large crickets and 2 standard size meal worms and the spider not molted at all yet...
I got a fire leg and spider growing really fast coz within a year I have had to upgrade enclosures 3 times all ready and I got the spider from spiderling...
The fire leg is in a 20×20×21 enclosure and outgrown the bark the spider was hiding under...
Coz of ordering too many fruit flies and small crickets and meal worms from internet I have waay too much insects I am a God for coz can't neglect em and crickets are more demanding and more active than any spider or reptile and take up 80 percent time looking after spiders n reptiles...
I have all my tarantulas on a made shelf all in same size enclosures put heat mats outside vivarium starting from left side then a vivarium next to the other one as a heat mat then the next one as a heat mat and so on and so on so that there is heat and the left to the right in the enclosure...
I have never intended to look after spiders in my life but I find myself having 16 of em and I been through hell since 2018 to 2021 and coz I had to have two dogs put sleep at 18 year old in human years I needed something to look after coz all my 42 years of being on this earth i have always looked after something whether its cats, dogs, rats, mice, ferrets, birds, rabbits, lizards, fish, terrapins but didn't want a massive responsibility that hurts the wallet or go prison for neglect...
If I told anybody my story from 2018 to 2021 you'd think how on earth am I still alive but we can grow weaker or we can grow stronger and with many distractions I have the better for me and to see every spider alive every day it makes me feel proud and I do weight lifting and am a vegetarian and I like to walk for miles with my shadow and only thing I drink is water, yeah I smoke weed and my local authority hates my guts for everything I do coz they was hoping I'd go depressed or angry but it never happened, Master Lee gets stronger and today I am stronger than yesterday and tomorrow I will be stronger than what I am today

I rarely name animals, I am the type that wouldnt name a dog. Any animal that I own that does have a name earned it somehow, like my Arizona blonde named Gertrude because she gives off sweet old lady vibes and I had her for over a year before she got a name.

Unfortunately there are some delusional ideas and practices floating around. I have had experiences where two of these “ideal” scenarios took place, but they were by accident and not design. One time I had my B. smithi/hammorii/anitha, on my lap at the computer and I dozed off briefly. Luckily she was still on my lap in the same spot when I woke up. I didn’t think of making a practice out of taking a nap with a spider out of containment. Second instance was two different species (Haplopelma/Cyriopogopus) in an enclosure with a makeshift divider between them. Inevitably, one of them breached the divider and ripped a leg off the other, then either crawled back over to her side or took up residence in the other spider’s burrow. Both instances occurred over a decade ago, and I haven’t tried them out again since. Perhaps the inter species residency has been taken after photos in books or scenes in movies or on talk shows where different types of inverts are mingling like the red knee tarantulas and emperor scorpions in “The Mummy Returns” or on those fear factor shows where a heap of tarantulas are dumped on contestants, which is super cruel to start, let alone them not being communal and cannibalistic. At least in the movies, they are wrangled by trained animal handlers, we hope, and are not harmed in real life. I can deal with the feeder roaches and locusts or whatever else they are using these days in contender face offs. Just no more pet inverts or other pets on the chopping block.

First off, thank you for mentioning the divider one. I've had a lot of people come to me with ideas about dividing up cages, and I always try to warn them from doing so. I almost did it myself years ago. And I think that we ALL do things early on that we learn from (and sometimes dodge catastrophe in the process). There's a big difference between that and the folks that try to convince others that it's right. Thanks for chiming in!

The salt thing does make sense in a roundabout sideways logic way. Our desert soil here in AZ does contain salt (its the bane of we gardeners) and we have a. Chalcodes here that do just fine. That said, the salt in the sand here is not the same as cooking salts and to add salt to substrate is courting disaster. Smh.

I definitely got where this person was coming from, but I think that this is a case of someone trying to replicate the natural habitat to an obessive (and potentially dangerous level). And then there was the part about them having brighter colors...: )

Only thing that really irritates me is the elitism in certain hobbiest community's when people feel entitled to tell others in the case of tarantulas and with people jumping into OW Ts, I see alot of experienced owners talking down on people decisions to keep a certain OW and then be very condenseding to the OP. Imo if someone feels that they are ready for OWs, give them the pros and cons of the genus/species give them the husbandry of said T and any other things you might think is important to be aware of. But I take huge issue when I see people trying to talk down on others because they might not be "experienced" ect ect. Its annoying 😒
