Easy horse gram curry for rice

- There are different methods of preparing horse gram curry. Horse gram cooked in coconut base gives this a yummy taste. The main ingredients are horse gram, grated coconut, green chili, small onion / shallots, garlic and some spices. This goes well with rice. We will take you through how to prepare this at home. Ingredients
Horse gram - 1 cup
Shallots/small onions - 6
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Garlic cloves - 6
Green chilli - 2
Red chilli powder - 1½ tsp
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Jeera - 1 tsp
Coconut oil - 2 tbsp
Pepper corns - ½ tsp
Mustard - 1 tsp
Red chilli - 4
Curry leaves - 3 sprigs
Salt - to taste
Water
Process
1. Heat a thick bottomed pan over medium flame and add 1 cup of horse gram
2. Stir continuously and dry roast it for 3-4 minutes
3. Now turn off the flame and transfer it into a bowl
4. Wash the horse gram 3 to 4 times and remove the stones and dirt
5. Pour water and soak it for 5 hours
6. Now transfer this into a pressure cooker
7. Add a little more water
8. Add 1 tsp of red chilli powder, ½ tsp of turmeric powder, a few curry leaves and a little salt
9. Close it with the lid and pressure cook it over medium flame
10. Meanwhile add 1 cup of grated coconut, 2 green chilies, 6 small onions / shallots, 5 garlic cloves, 1 sprig of curry leaves, ½ tsp of pepper corns, 1 tsp of jeera / cumin seeds and ½ tsp of turmeric powder in a blender
11. Add a little water and coarse grind this and keep aside
12. Turn off the flame after 5 whistles
13. Heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a thick bottomed pan over medium flame
14. Now add the coconut paste
15. Sauté this till the raw smell of garlic goes off
16. When the pressure comes down, open the cooker and allow it to cool
17. Now take 2 ladles of the boiled horse gram along with the gravy and grind this in a blender
18. Add it into the cooker and mix well
19. Add the boiled horse gram into the pan
20. Add a little more water
21. Mix well and boil it for 2 minutes
22. Now check salt and add a little more if required
23. Turn off the flame
24. Heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a thick bottomed pan over medium flame
25. Add 1 tsp of mustard seeds
26. When it splutters, add ½ cup of finely chopped small onions / shallots
27. Sauté this till it turns translucent
28. Now add 4 chopped red chilies and 2 sprigs of curry leaves
29. Sauté this for some time and turn off the flame
30. Now add ½ tsp of red chilli powder and mix well
31. Add this into the horse gram curry
32. Mix well. It is ready now
33. This goes well with rice
