  • Today I tested another 2 dirt cheap 18650 size Li-ion cells from Ebay, donated to me by a viewer (thanks!!!). This test includes capacity measurement using my DIY battery analyzer and, of course, an autopsy. Can those super cheap batteries be real, or just another fakes?
    List of all 18650 Li-ion cells I've tested:

    In my favourite top3 You Tubers. (Esp. after looking at his clocks and his cat) - and with so much that made me laugh. DiodeGW is certainly a force among the best of the electronic engineers here on YT. Make no mistake - he has an excellent foundation of knowledge and experience that he shares with great style, quality and humor. Brilliant. I have written a few praising comments recently. I think the effort and time involved and the generosity of the content makers in bringing this new form of media to life, is quite a remarkable thing - thanks to people like DiodeGW. Respect from Martin, a fellow engineer.

      My favourite Electrical Engineer on YT is Mehdi Sadaghdar (ElectroBOOM) and I only like DiodeGoneWild because of his accent (If he didn't have that accent I wouldn't watch him lol)

      @@nutzboi ElectroBOOM is great, but DiodeGoneWild is not a low voltage version, he is high voltage. He has more electronics experience/knowledge than ElectroBOOM, though Mehdi is a serious physics genius. All round, yes he is amazing. The unibrow .

      I enjoy Mehdi’s videos but he tries too hard to be a clown. DGW’s understated humour is just as funny and is more to my taste.

    The liquid in the battery is the electrolyte. It is needed for the battery to work. It doesn't need to flow out like in the green battery, but the whole system must feel moist. The low performance of the yellow battery is most likely (partly?) due to loss of electrolyte. If you rapidly charge or discharge the battery, it gets hot, which increases the pressure in the cell, and some electrolyte might vent off through the safety pressure release in the positive contact. Also the seal can go bad over time, causing electrolyte to diffuse out even if there is no overpressure in the cell.

    Good video. I'm starting to dabble in solar and battery tech as a hobby. Will build some battery bundles from lithium cells. Knowing how to spot fakes and used batteries is key. The price variance is huge. As such, a cheap, low capacity, but solid cell might be more economical, maybe? Will do some math after taking some samples. I bought a programmable load that will measure a battery's capacity automatically. Thanks.

    So the reason why the 1800mAh one was so poor (1100mAh) was because it was specifically made/designed to be low capacity, there was not enough material inside to be of decent quality or capacity. The inside was hollow...
    And the reason why the 2400mAh battery performed so badly was because it was a recycled cell, probably from e-waste, where they take the battery pack, disassemble it for the 18650s, and then they just re-wrap it, shove new contacts on, and sell it to you. Under those circumstances it really is pot luck as to what capacity you will get (the previous UltraFire recycled cell was 1500mAh).

  • @BomJimmy
    @BomJimmy 3 роки тому

    Ultrafire are very low in actual amp hours. Most othe sellers sell refurbished pullout by using a new sleeves ( heavier ones) and works long and good too. But the length increases due to added cap tip at positive and may not fit easily in many products.

    You know, I love to test all 18650's too. There are a couple other guys who do it as well. We should start a website with videos (I am hoping to get a video camera for christmas) with load testing of every brand/color we can find. Then, make a database where people can see for themselves. I would be willing to put in the work, let me know.
    Then, scammers will be held accountable right away, good mid-price batteries will sell well, and batteries will get better, faster!

    You missed to measure the length and the surface of this piecees of 'copperpaper'. Also their individuell weights would have been interesting. Maybe you should consider to repeat this test in some future. Maybe we find out even more and new things today.
    And they say, that lots of different prescious metalls are in this copperblend. Maybe it's as well possible to measure and calculate the specific weight. We know the surface, so we only have to measure the thickness as well properly. Maybe it would be of some interest anyway to know the thickness of all such samples, they may not all be the same?

    The moral of this video, is don't buy cheap bargain basement batteries, you'll pay for it twice due to their lack of power/defect, or worse yet they leak or puff up and burns your equipment. Also, only buy from well known reputable sellers. By the way, AliExpress, BangGood, etc are NOT sellers themselves (they are just online portals for sellers) so you must search for good seller on those websites, or better yet use Ebay or Amazon. ;D

    I wonder if the reason for the loads of electrolyte was to compensate for the rolls not being densely paced together.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  5 років тому

      The rolls may be hand-rolled by poorly paid starving workers in China. Then it, of course, needs more electrolyte. The layers are not pressed together enough. There's also a lot of empty space, so the roll can loosen over time or because of the shipping vibrations.

    Those 9900 and 12000 mAh batteries are complete crap. Friend bought a pair of GIF 9900 in eBay and then we found that their actual capacity is 350 mAh. By the way such batteries may also have smaller battery with some filler like sand inside. Then they will not have double ending caps.
    Seems if you wish to keep your laptop battery capacity longer while not using it, discharge it to 50% and put into shelf. Then charge to 50% again after some time.
    Instant thumb up for pronunciation. The best fire extinguisher by the way :) Take a cat away before messing with batteries where weird smelly liquid is coming out.

    The green battery is an outright fake. No Li-ion battery manufacturer has button-top 18650s in its official lineup - if the button top is an integral part of the battery's "can", it's fake/dodgy for sure.

    • @NetRolller3D
      @NetRolller3D 5 років тому

      @Quanchy Plimp if you pulled the wrapper off of these, you will find that the button is welded on after production, covering the original flat top, and not an integral part of the positive pole. In fact, Panasonic uses a very distinctive design for their positive pole, with 3 vent holes.

      They must put the case through bureaucratic rings in China at first to do that. And because China has a "power vertical" like in all autocracies, such things must be submitted directly to high superiors like Uncle Xi. In fact it may work if for example Trump instead of trade war would give a proposal to Xi about making China as major rechargeable battery manufacturer in world against rooting out all fakeries like these fake batteries. It may work.

    The problem with unknown "recycled" cell is that you don't know what happened before. Often they were overdischarged, meaning they've build copper shunt inside the cell leading to internal short circuit and explosion. I discovered this, the hard way. Some of them also don't hold full charge for long and they definitely have much less capacity than before.

      It's on my website:
      danyk.cz/avr_aku_en.html
      A video about it may also come one day... And I believe that my one is better than ZB2L3 because my one has a programmable current, and the current is constant during the discharge. ZB2L3 seems to have just an external resistor you can swap. The current declines as the battery discharges.

      The realistic capacity rating makes those fakes and recycled cells harder to identify, unfortunately. They should stick to 9900mAh ratigns :D.

      @@DiodeGoneWild very true fakes just make it harder and harder to find real 18650 these days when will china and others learn that you can't get stupid ratings in one cell

      Yeah and the wrapping looked authentic, even had a web address. Would have been nice to see the website reviewed, is it actually an actual website with more fake information or just a 404

      lol yeah, there was a 30,000mAh powerbank somewhere.
      a 30Ah lithium cell is the size and weight of several house bricks, totally not believable.
