- Today I tested another 2 dirt cheap 18650 size Li-ion cells from Ebay, donated to me by a viewer (thanks!!!). This test includes capacity measurement using my DIY battery analyzer and, of course, an autopsy. Can those super cheap batteries be real, or just another fakes?
List of all 18650 Li-ion cells I've tested:

In my favourite top3 You Tubers. (Esp. after looking at his clocks and his cat) - and with so much that made me laugh. DiodeGW is certainly a force among the best of the electronic engineers here on YT. Make no mistake - he has an excellent foundation of knowledge and experience that he shares with great style, quality and humor. Brilliant. I have written a few praising comments recently. I think the effort and time involved and the generosity of the content makers in bringing this new form of media to life, is quite a remarkable thing - thanks to people like DiodeGW. Respect from Martin, a fellow engineer.
My favourite Electrical Engineer on YT is Mehdi Sadaghdar (ElectroBOOM) and I only like DiodeGoneWild because of his accent (If he didn't have that accent I wouldn't watch him lol)
@@nutzboi ElectroBOOM is great, but DiodeGoneWild is not a low voltage version, he is high voltage. He has more electronics experience/knowledge than ElectroBOOM, though Mehdi is a serious physics genius. All round, yes he is amazing. The unibrow .
I enjoy Mehdi’s videos but he tries too hard to be a clown. DGW’s understated humour is just as funny and is more to my taste.
@Diodegonewild has been around waay before UA-cam took off, he has his own website danyk.cz, which I used alot when I got into electronics around '05-'06, when I became interested in hv power supplies and Tesla coils....analog electronics (I've kinda moved to digital electronics), jmartis2, and Steve ward also have gotten my respects...... also check 4hv.org,
Tbh i first though his accent was Indian 😂, because of him rolling his letters so much, then I found out he was danyk.cz
To add, his hate for garbage chinese "products".
I think the cat also has an electrical history, but it is an asset in your vlogs.
So it is obvious that people like to light you up.
A clear vlog about the batteries.
The liquid in the battery is the electrolyte. It is needed for the battery to work. It doesn't need to flow out like in the green battery, but the whole system must feel moist. The low performance of the yellow battery is most likely (partly?) due to loss of electrolyte. If you rapidly charge or discharge the battery, it gets hot, which increases the pressure in the cell, and some electrolyte might vent off through the safety pressure release in the positive contact. Also the seal can go bad over time, causing electrolyte to diffuse out even if there is no overpressure in the cell.
You should make a teardown video on some RC batteries. Would be very interesting to see how they differ physically from normal Li-ion/polymer batteries.
seeing videos like this one makes me feel so lucky about having found a 3s3p 18650 laptop battery made out of samsung's pink 2.6Ah cells fo 14€. they seemed legit because even it wasn't a very scientific test (i even didn't plan to test it) i used a 10W led and it lasted about what it should have.
Your accent is incredibly strong but surprisingly clear and understandable
Diode! I need you to post a video about this homemade battery capacity tester, and also your homemade watt meter power-bar. It's been forever that I've been meaning to ask.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Thanks dude love the videos!
If you're fine with text and pictures, see his blog:

He's planning to do a video on these sometime, I think.
@@vaclavtrpisovsky I will now be stuck on his blog for at least 24 hours. Thanks so much man I've always wondered about these "dangeroooos" devices he has created.
Thanks again bud! Much appreciated!
They are on my website :). Somebody above me already sent the links. Maybe I will also make a video about them one day....
@@DiodeGoneWild please do! I wasn't aware of your blog. Lots of very fine projects on there! Keep it up Diode I get a lot of inspiration from your teardowns and reverse engineering. Only you and BigClive make such good reverse engineering videos!
Cheers from Canada!
Finally THE CAT is BACK! :)
I have a lion battery that charges normally but the second I stop charging the voltage drop by 1 volt every second to about 1-1.5 volts may I know the problem? And what is the fix?
Good video. I'm starting to dabble in solar and battery tech as a hobby. Will build some battery bundles from lithium cells. Knowing how to spot fakes and used batteries is key. The price variance is huge. As such, a cheap, low capacity, but solid cell might be more economical, maybe? Will do some math after taking some samples. I bought a programmable load that will measure a battery's capacity automatically. Thanks.
hey you are discharging it to 3 v but i want to know . is your device measures voltage of battery when its loaded or is it just cuts discharge and measures it to see if it is 3 volts thank you
Your battery videos are very educational. The cat more than makes up for minor focus issues.
So the reason why the 1800mAh one was so poor (1100mAh) was because it was specifically made/designed to be low capacity, there was not enough material inside to be of decent quality or capacity. The inside was hollow...
And the reason why the 2400mAh battery performed so badly was because it was a recycled cell, probably from e-waste, where they take the battery pack, disassemble it for the 18650s, and then they just re-wrap it, shove new contacts on, and sell it to you. Under those circumstances it really is pot luck as to what capacity you will get (the previous UltraFire recycled cell was 1500mAh).
Ultrafire are very low in actual amp hours. Most othe sellers sell refurbished pullout by using a new sleeves ( heavier ones) and works long and good too. But the length increases due to added cap tip at positive and may not fit easily in many products.
Seldom have I seen such an entertaining yet educational video!
But I really wouldn't touch that stuff with bare hands, especially not the solvent.
Thanks for the reply, lots of requests for a video on this piece of equipment. Best wishes from Northern Ireland.
I did similar autopsy with one of an old Chinese mobile phone battery. Similar copper and black strips came out of the dissection. And it went hot too, but it very densly packed..
Can you also measure the cell's internal resistance? The old cells - their Internal Resistance shoots up and they won't provide current.
8:27 Aw, look at that, the cat is sniffing the fire extinguisher! Maybe they want it instead (assuming that it isn't needed to put out one of the Li-Ion cells if it goes in flames).
You know, I love to test all 18650's too. There are a couple other guys who do it as well. We should start a website with videos (I am hoping to get a video camera for christmas) with load testing of every brand/color we can find. Then, make a database where people can see for themselves. I would be willing to put in the work, let me know.
Then, scammers will be held accountable right away, good mid-price batteries will sell well, and batteries will get better, faster!
Is there a video of how you made that battery tester? If not, can you make one?
Diode, Can you make a video about switching mode power supplies again? I'm getting a 12V 2A one.
You missed to measure the length and the surface of this piecees of 'copperpaper'. Also their individuell weights would have been interesting. Maybe you should consider to repeat this test in some future. Maybe we find out even more and new things today.
And they say, that lots of different prescious metalls are in this copperblend. Maybe it's as well possible to measure and calculate the specific weight. We know the surface, so we only have to measure the thickness as well properly. Maybe it would be of some interest anyway to know the thickness of all such samples, they may not all be the same?
@DiodeGoneWild, Where can I buy a battery analyzer like yours?
The proper translation written on the Battery if "fucking you why"
Love your cat, love your fire extinguisher, shame to waste it on a real fire though
Where to buy your fire extinguisher..???? love it...!!!!

Dear Sir
I hope a can call on your expertise!
I have a Boston Acoustics Subwoofer ASW 650 with a faulty power supply.
The service manual shows a transformer based power supply, but the one with the unit is a switch mode power supply!
Does anybody have a circuit diagram for the Smps?
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards
As always very entertaining and helpful video! Keep them coming please...
The moral of this video, is don't buy cheap bargain basement batteries, you'll pay for it twice due to their lack of power/defect, or worse yet they leak or puff up and burns your equipment. Also, only buy from well known reputable sellers. By the way, AliExpress, BangGood, etc are NOT sellers themselves (they are just online portals for sellers) so you must search for good seller on those websites, or better yet use Ebay or Amazon. ;D
8:11 Anyone noticed the spark?????
No... Only you
I wonder if the reason for the loads of electrolyte was to compensate for the rolls not being densely paced together.
The rolls may be hand-rolled by poorly paid starving workers in China. Then it, of course, needs more electrolyte. The layers are not pressed together enough. There's also a lot of empty space, so the roll can loosen over time or because of the shipping vibrations.
with bare hands... what a man!
I like that the cat as soon as it heard that it heard that you wanted his/her help nonchalantly ambled out of the danger zone. Could we know your feline friend's name, please?
what was this lanhuage
Hey! where have you been?! .... we missed the cat! 😉
Hello, can u make softstart using Resistor chalk. 20w47r?
Looks like a crazy party!
My new favourite Czech film.
Nice cat!!!! How many batteries does it use?
I like your fire extinguisher....👍
Great vid! Anyone know a trustworthy place to get some hundreds of 18650 in Europe in a proper price? Any ideas? Tired to see all the americans with their bulk offers but in Europe nada...
All new from Diode gone wild lithium batteries Good job on pronouncing it how do you stay safe in doing that ?
He doesn't. 😂 I was waiting for the cathode material to go on fire...
Probably big clive does it safe ish, but this was kind if scarey. Lol
Maybe it was filled with nail polish remover?😂
*EVEN MORE SALLLTTTTT!!!!!*
Saaaaalt
Lol
Cat loves the beer
wow , thankyou for that,i had no idea
Very good. Knowledge you shareing
6:30 hahahaha, not me, they sold to YOU😁
Good investigation ! 👍👍👍 !
7 dislike is from people after reading the cat is locked out now.
Adrian the cat is locked maybe because for safety ,li-ion battery is dangerous! The battery can explode some times it shorted-circuit
I am currently sticking with Molicel for the foreseeable future, the P26A and P28A are amazing for the price. 2600-2800 mah and high discharge ratings too. About $6 online too and grade A un used fresh cells always.
My Samsung 1300mah 18650 weights 40 grams so anything lighter is less than 1000mah.
lol u keep saying fake battery but its still a battery its just sold as higher amps when its not. fake battery is no battery at al like a metal shell filled with sand thats called fake my friend btw every battery that says fire is a re used battery
Silent cute cat
I love your cat!!!😍
lmao! good fire extinguisher. you got another subscriber now :-)
[ Tires Screech ]
Yes! Yes! Yeeees!! Principal Seymour Skinner!
Lol. The battery code is same
UA-cam doesn't show this video in my subscriptions feed. This platform as been sucking for a while.
To be honest you get what you pay for, do you really expect A1 quality at bargain prices? The problem is poor quality products dressed up as genuine premium manufacture. The batteries featured here were not a well known brand.
I love the accent, is it fake?
žatec, only good for extinguishing lithium fires
I want you to review something for me it is a lithium ion battery that has a USB port in it and the battery is a 18650 cell 2600 mAh 3.6 volts and 9.36 Watt hours with a protection circuit in the anode and it's made in China. So if you review it for me that would be great I already have one and my opinion it works well. It also comes with a case. Also you can buy this product on Amazon. Also the products name is edisonbright.
10:00 😂😂😍😍
Best moment 👌👍👌
Hahahaa ... Premium Fire extinguisher :0)
Bring your cat to every videos
Nice.
2:42 im not fake duh?
I gave your cat a thumbs up
Those 9900 and 12000 mAh batteries are complete crap. Friend bought a pair of GIF 9900 in eBay and then we found that their actual capacity is 350 mAh. By the way such batteries may also have smaller battery with some filler like sand inside. Then they will not have double ending caps.
Seems if you wish to keep your laptop battery capacity longer while not using it, discharge it to 50% and put into shelf. Then charge to 50% again after some time.
Instant thumb up for pronunciation. The best fire extinguisher by the way :) Take a cat away before messing with batteries where weird smelly liquid is coming out.
The green battery is an outright fake. No Li-ion battery manufacturer has button-top 18650s in its official lineup - if the button top is an integral part of the battery's "can", it's fake/dodgy for sure.
@Quanchy Plimp if you pulled the wrapper off of these, you will find that the button is welded on after production, covering the original flat top, and not an integral part of the positive pole. In fact, Panasonic uses a very distinctive design for their positive pole, with 3 vent holes.
@Quanchy Plimp from the description: Please note this is an OEM Panasonic NCR18650B cell with a button top spot welded by a third party manufacturer. This cell has an additional wrapper and insulator which are not to be removed.
@DiodeGoneWild That's an oddity. GIF destroys their name this way, why would they do this? Makes no sense to me.
It´s pretty simple: recycled or fake batteries are MUCH cheaper for them, and a lot of people don´t check them or at least don´t complain.
@@Basement-Science I'm talking about the batteries at the very end of the video
Why don't you open a dispute and get your money back?
If enough people did their civic duty, this nonsense would stop.
They must put the case through bureaucratic rings in China at first to do that. And because China has a "power vertical" like in all autocracies, such things must be submitted directly to high superiors like Uncle Xi. In fact it may work if for example Trump instead of trade war would give a proposal to Xi about making China as major rechargeable battery manufacturer in world against rooting out all fakeries like these fake batteries. It may work.
You are the best
KITTEH!
Hi
*d o u l a r d*
Tearing apart those cells without an Explosion Containment Pie Dish. Takes nerve.
I'm telling Clive
My thoughts exactly :)
Is a capacitor.
correct! the best way to enclose a large surface in a cylinder is wrapping it
@@zolatanaffa87 I had bought here in my town, and I wondered the low weight and low yield coupled to a very high current. When I opened I saw that it was even a capacitor, an ultracapacitor. Lol
Green says reverse but the same yellow revorse as expected from chinese guys
👍
The problem with unknown "recycled" cell is that you don't know what happened before. Often they were overdischarged, meaning they've build copper shunt inside the cell leading to internal short circuit and explosion. I discovered this, the hard way. Some of them also don't hold full charge for long and they definitely have much less capacity than before.
@@esecallum Yes you can
Ese Callum reported 😡,can you speak without that words -_-
TIRTAGT TECH reported! Don’t get butthurt by a joke.

@@tirtagttech512 Why should he avoid talking about sex? Of course he can if he has a suitable dildo, although vibrators rarely use 18650 cells.
I subscibed as soon as he said 'bloody hell'...
2014 refers to the year of a Chinese standard. When you read something like GB xxxxx-yyyy it's a 国标 guobiao standard.
Now put them back together and show they still work.
1 Day ago WTF!!! Oh wait you are a Patron...now makes sense.....
@Fracture:
D.G.W. told me (i'm a super-patreon) that he is still attending the applied magic course, as soon as he graduates he will try to rebuild the batteries and regenerate them at twice their original capacity! hahaha :-) :-) :-)
Or just sprinkle it in your coffee, makes a great creamer. xD
Your cat is really cute
Leave beer with cat. Kitty will put out fire in case of trouble, no problem. :)
Make video about your baterry analyser
He made it himself. See his blog danyk.cz/avr_aku_en.html
It's on my website:
danyk.cz/avr_aku_en.html
A video about it may also come one day... And I believe that my one is better than ZB2L3 because my one has a programmable current, and the current is constant during the discharge. ZB2L3 seems to have just an external resistor you can swap. The current declines as the battery discharges.
DiodeGoneWild do a video about how to make one and not just a text instructions.
Ta výslovnost je unikátní!! 😁
That cute cat !!
13:17 he was lucky enough because his hands were completely dry otherwise it would have burned him to hell....
At least these are not stupid disclaimer like 1.000.000 mah at 300.000 amp at least these are very reasonable
The realistic capacity rating makes those fakes and recycled cells harder to identify, unfortunately. They should stick to 9900mAh ratigns :D.
@@DiodeGoneWild very true fakes just make it harder and harder to find real 18650 these days when will china and others learn that you can't get stupid ratings in one cell

lol yeah, there was a 30,000mAh powerbank somewhere.
a 30Ah lithium cell is the size and weight of several house bricks, totally not believable.
