What a fine work this is. with a breathtaking 'allegro vivace', an all-too-brief, touching 'adagio', the gorgeous melody of the 'canzonetta' all flanked by the charming opening 'lento' and final 'allegro' with its' wonderful cadenza.
I was not at all prepared for how wonderful this piece is. I own a recording of Berkeley's Fourth Symphony, which I also like, so I followed up on that by searching for more Berkeley. This is just exquisite.
This piece was actually commissioned by the BBC and world premiered in 1973 at a Prom Concert but has never been programmed since. So if you missed it..... tough luck!! What's the point of commissioning pieces and then not promoting them afterwards, especially if they are masterpieces like this? The programmers should be hanging their heads in shame.

I absolutely agree, Ronald!!
Shocking beautiful...
A very important addition to the oboe repertoire.
