Sok tau lo, diluar negeri jadi pejabat biasa aja.
Actually, we did have a genius in government before: B. J. Habibie. Unfortunately, he was way ahead of his time and was never fully appreciated until later in life.

Nadiem is on different level. He founded a decacorn, his effort as new education minister will bear fruit when the students graduate into job market years later. He still own shares in Gojek, hence can effect positive changes there too.
Not necessarily. You can come from an average family but if you study hard by yourself from listening to songs, watching movies (at first with subtitles), which you can stream or download from the internet easily nowadays, find out the meaning of the words that you don't know, try to pronounce it, try to find people that you can practice with, repeat those things frequently. I believe you can reach quite good level of fluency in English without having to attend any expensive international school.
Wow, never think about the impact of the alcohol ban in that perspective before, very interesting take on it. The first time I went to jogja I was surprised of how many bule are there in malioboro, but maybe nowadays people still can do that with app like couch surfing, I wish there were more bule here in Samarinda, I've only have convo with bule here twice and I really enjoyed talking to them.
It's true,so when he speak in English he just like being confident and know what he want to says,he was born in Singapore and the most people there are can speak English pretty well.

This video explained 30% of how good Nadiem's English is The rest 70% explained her story about how important basic conversation (in English) between local Indonesians and Caucasians That was superB! a lesson learned that we (Indonesians) have to learn Thanks Sacha
He went to high school in Singapore and he also went to BROWN University before he went to Harvard. Both are ivy league colleges. So it is only natural, I guess, that he knows so many vocabularies that even native speakers don't use on everyday term. I also felt the same when I heard him using hyper experiment, hubris, and serendipitous. Way to point to point that out, Sacha. Haha. I remembered having a hard time doing SAT practices and such when I was living in the States (and I lived there since I was 12) because the English was nothing like TOEFL. I had to know thesaurus words for SAT. I wonder what Nadiem's SAT score was.
This is one Seleb English video that I enjoyed the most. Laughing, smiling and nodding at the entire video. It's true that Nadiem becoming the new ministry is either good or bad news. But thing happened and let's just hope that he WILL also bring changes to Indonesia like he did together with his former company. I kinda hope he will kind of change our education system, public school will be as good as private school, and cheaper, and everyone will be happy, thus Nadiem will get a nobel prize if he really do that 🤣 since our education systems are so fucked up. Hence, I should save more money for private school 😣 Good job, Sach! Seleb English fan here 🥰
Emg knp mba, Normal kok Bule buka kamus bhs.inggris.. 😅 Itu tu kyak kita org indonesia buka kmus bhs.indonesia buat cari arti kata yg jrang d pake misal kata kondusif, integrasi, dll. 🙄
No doubt he speaks English fluently! Be kind, Sacha! He's highly educated, so he may know more than we do!!! HIU BRES , HEW BRES whatever I have never heard any of them!!!
Your rant is so truuee. It really happened to me when the first time I went to Bali around 2011. Except the bule asked local beer instead of bir Bintang lol. I'm really overwhelmed by your analysis that a small change in policy can make a big impact in the everyday culture.
Free lesson that you won't find in class: 😊 - HECK / CRAP / H*LL / F*CK / SH*T + OUT OF... Bisa dipakai di antara Verb dan Object. Fungsinya hanya untuk penekanan. Jadi jangan bingung lagi ya... contoh: - That movie scared the h*ll out of me. - The boxer beat the sh*t out of his opponent. Bayar pakai LIKE aja...😁
As long as you are not a teacher, top government official or celebrity who want to ‘show up’. you don’t don’t need to be so fluent. The english is to communicate, as long as your counter part understand you and he understand you that will be enough.
Sacha, I know him, he spent his elementary school in Jakarta, then went to Singapore for secondary school. He had his college education in Brown University then got his master degree from Harvard Business School. So his English probably stands in between Singlish and American
10 tahun kerja di Singapore...English lancar tapi logat Singapore Most of the people here, they don't speak perfect English for our daily conversations ...karna, Singapore emang beragam bahasa, English, melayu, mandarin( yg juga punya banyak jenis bahasa, ex Cantonese, hokkian, mandarin etc),and Indian Tapi walopun begitu, masih asyik aja...banyak slang, it makes our english more colourful. just wanna tell my story here So, ade gue yg kecil (masih SD) kan baru pindah sekolah karna kita semua pindah dan sometimes gue ajarin ade2 gue english yg basically gue tau itu jarang banget diajarin di sekolah2 biasa apalagi di kota kecil gtu. And i often asked my bro “how’s the english?” Blahblahblah.. karna gue percaya walopun lu se bodo2 nya pelajaran mtk, dll at least if u can speak english lu gabakal susah2 amat ntr. And it’s important for sure Dan, pas kmren naek kelas jadi kelas 5.. (dia pindah ke sekolah ini tuh kelas 4) gue tanya lagi “sekarang disekolah bahasa inggris belajarnya udah sampe mana? Apa aja?” Dan ade gue jawab.. “di kelas 5 sekarang gada pelajaran bahasa inggris” anjir gue pkir he must be joking.. eh tau bener karna gue langsung tanya ke walikelasnya dan memang di kelas dia gada pelajaran bahasa inggris. I asked “why?” And the teacher just simply said “males ngajar bahasa inggris, soalnya udah kebanyakan pelajaran.. nanti aja kelas 6 paling ada bahasa inggris lagi” karna kalian tau sendirikan kalo guru sd biasanya walikelas tuh ngajar most of the subjects gt kecuali pelajaran agama, olahraga, seni budaya? Cmiiw. So, gue tuh bingung aja gitu.. udah tau kan kualitas pelajaran bahasa inggris disekolah kita tuh kaya gimana gitu (buat yg sekolah di sekolah biasa2) bcs gue aja sadar kadang banyak banget basic2 dalam learning english yg kelewat2 di sekolah gt.. Jadi gue prihatin aja gt, gimana mau belajar buat anak2 diluaran sana yg belum bisa dapet belajar inggris dg mudah. So yeah, that’s my story Thank you and sorry bahasa nya campur aduk lol
Topik menarik. Kalau pengalaman saya justru pelajaran English dari sekolah dan bahkan tempat les kurang begitu berpengaruh tajam buat saya pribadi. Lebih ngefek nonton film, denger musik, baca buku, interaksi langsung sama bule, & langsung merantau ke luar. Kalau dipikir2, salah satu yg bikin pengajaran di sekolah ga begitu ngefek adalah karena si gurunya sendiri masih indo banget cara ngomongnya. Jadi kita sendiri mengolah english malah tetep pake persepsi indo, yang menurut saya justru mendobrak persepsi logika itu yang terpenting (buat saya pribadi loh ya).
Sorry, setau gw klu gasalah antara dr 2017/2018 kemarin emang bahasa inggris bukan jd mapel sd. Bhs inggris udah masuknya mulok kyk olahrga. CMIIW
Vie yeah im totally agree with that bc learning english at school kadang gurunya indo banget (gada aksennya) dan terkadang banyak kekeliruan. But my reason why im telling this story is bc i just can’t really understand why the teacher just says “males ngajar inggris” u know im saying? Terlebih kan ini siswa SD. Dan in my opinion belejar sejak kecil kan lebih bagus. Jadi gue cerita ini tuh bayangin anak yg lain diluar sana yg gada resources yg lain selain sekolah. Gmn mereka bisa tau dan belajar

I listen to your rant, and love it Sacha. It is sad that we've lost the informal university. Those things you've said were true, it wasn't just practising/exchange the language but more. I hope the new minister will create such environment somehow, so everyone (not only some levels) will get the chance to build their skills.

And yeah, I think he will experience some depression, because in the goverment you will have to go through a loooong birocracy to finalised a policy to solve a problem before actually doing it.
Sok tau lo, diluar negeri jadi pejabat biasa aja.

Actually, we did have a genius in government before: B. J. Habibie. Unfortunately, he was way ahead of his time and was never fully appreciated until later in life.
nadiem is like a living dictionary. hubris? seriously thats new. never heard.
Just because of a small mistake that is exaggerated? If there are foreigners who speak Indonesian even though it is wrong, Indonesians will not laugh at it. But on the contrary if our country mispronounce English, what is their response? You know ...

Dear Nadiem,

Sacha when knowing Indonesian has a good English : this person must be rich.
@Faustinus Karyadi Ikr. That's why I agree with Sacha's statement
Sambil nonton film, sambil nyalain English subtitlenya aja udah banget2 membantu kok.
Yang dimaksud sacha itu kalo bahasa inggris nya pake vocab yg fancy yg bahkan org native byk yg ga pake. Itu yg sekolah di international school
@Su Jn maaf, di SD mas Nadiem diajarin kok. soalnya saya 1 sekolah sama beliau, tapi beda 8 angkatan

2:53 aduh nadiem.. kamu bikin saya kerja.. 😂
Ratsen Al Amin ngakak banget pas itu
Seleb English fan here 🥰
It's not his former company, it still is.
i'm with you in this case, I condemn indonesian education systems deeply on a personal level. we need some drastic changes.
I feel that too when we went home from Banda. Me and some my friend had a talk with Bule. I think we practice much when we talk with them, for free.

- bahasa inggris nadiem lebih inggris drpd sacha
- bahasa sunda kelas 1sd susah anying
- nadiem menjadi mendikbud akan bnyk terhalang birokrasi
- anak muda misqueen gak bisa lagi belajar bhs inggris dr bule yg beli alkohol diminimart circle k krn alkohol gak dijual lagi disana

Hubris is a loan word from Greek. In it's original Greek, it's pronounced "habris" (with "a" not "u" or "iu").
Yaaa.. literary is accepted since he has masters, and we know “literate” is common for academician...

@Su Jn ditipu gimana
As long as you are not a teacher, top government official or celebrity who want to ‘show up’. you don’t don’t need to be so fluent. The english is to communicate, as long as your counter part understand you and he understand you that will be enough.
ini yg gue tunggu-tunggu, he's so fluent
Sacha, I know him, he spent his elementary school in Jakarta, then went to Singapore for secondary school. He had his college education in Brown University then got his master degree from Harvard Business School. So his English probably stands in between Singlish and American
The easy way to remember hubris is to pair it with its opposite: humility. Two "hues". Humility (kerendahan hati) vs Hubris (kecongkakan).
10 tahun kerja di Singapore...English lancar tapi logat Singapore
Most of the people here, they don't speak perfect English for our daily conversations ...karna, Singapore emang beragam bahasa, English, melayu, mandarin( yg juga punya banyak jenis bahasa, ex Cantonese, hokkian, mandarin etc),and Indian
Tapi walopun begitu, masih asyik aja...banyak slang, it makes our english more colourful.

just wanna tell my story here
So, ade gue yg kecil (masih SD) kan baru pindah sekolah karna kita semua pindah dan sometimes gue ajarin ade2 gue english yg basically gue tau itu jarang banget diajarin di sekolah2 biasa apalagi di kota kecil gtu. And i often asked my bro “how’s the english?” Blahblahblah.. karna gue percaya walopun lu se bodo2 nya pelajaran mtk, dll at least if u can speak english lu gabakal susah2 amat ntr. And it’s important for sure
Dan, pas kmren naek kelas jadi kelas 5.. (dia pindah ke sekolah ini tuh kelas 4) gue tanya lagi “sekarang disekolah bahasa inggris belajarnya udah sampe mana? Apa aja?” Dan ade gue jawab.. “di kelas 5 sekarang gada pelajaran bahasa inggris” anjir gue pkir he must be joking.. eh tau bener karna gue langsung tanya ke walikelasnya dan memang di kelas dia gada pelajaran bahasa inggris.
I asked “why?” And the teacher just simply said “males ngajar bahasa inggris, soalnya udah kebanyakan pelajaran.. nanti aja kelas 6 paling ada bahasa inggris lagi” karna kalian tau sendirikan kalo guru sd biasanya walikelas tuh ngajar most of the subjects gt kecuali pelajaran agama, olahraga, seni budaya? Cmiiw.
So, gue tuh bingung aja gitu.. udah tau kan kualitas pelajaran bahasa inggris disekolah kita tuh kaya gimana gitu (buat yg sekolah di sekolah biasa2) bcs gue aja sadar kadang banyak banget basic2 dalam learning english yg kelewat2 di sekolah gt..
Jadi gue prihatin aja gt, gimana mau belajar buat anak2 diluaran sana yg belum bisa dapet belajar inggris dg mudah.
So yeah, that’s my story
Thank you and sorry bahasa nya campur aduk lol
Topik menarik. Kalau pengalaman saya justru pelajaran English dari sekolah dan bahkan tempat les kurang begitu berpengaruh tajam buat saya pribadi. Lebih ngefek nonton film, denger musik, baca buku, interaksi langsung sama bule, & langsung merantau ke luar.
Kalau dipikir2, salah satu yg bikin pengajaran di sekolah ga begitu ngefek adalah karena si gurunya sendiri masih indo banget cara ngomongnya. Jadi kita sendiri mengolah english malah tetep pake persepsi indo, yang menurut saya justru mendobrak persepsi logika itu yang terpenting (buat saya pribadi loh ya).
Sorry, setau gw klu gasalah antara dr 2017/2018 kemarin emang bahasa inggris bukan jd mapel sd. Bhs inggris udah masuknya mulok kyk olahrga. CMIIW
Fajaar Adzakwan K13 di SD negeri... udh jadi mulok/ekskul kak.. yg bingung guru SMP nya.. ngjar dr awal...😫😥
Vie yeah im totally agree with that bc learning english at school kadang gurunya indo banget (gada aksennya) dan terkadang banyak kekeliruan. But my reason why im telling this story is bc i just can’t really understand why the teacher just says “males ngajar inggris” u know im saying? Terlebih kan ini siswa SD. Dan in my opinion belejar sejak kecil kan lebih bagus. Jadi gue cerita ini tuh bayangin anak yg lain diluar sana yg gada resources yg lain selain sekolah. Gmn mereka bisa tau dan belajar
Nadia P. Sari ohh really? I didn’t know that. Iya gurunya skrg nyantai bgt. Jadi kasian buat anak2 yg gada support dari luar sekolah
