Isn't his deadlift record 500kg? That means that each hand needs a grip of at least 250 kg plus additional dynamic force to balance when lifting. So 198 pounds max is way to low.
I checked the 500kg record. He wouldn't be able to hold this with the sole grip of his hands. Without the straps he would be lost. So i take back some of my say. But i think, one can hold more than the pure squeeze grip would allow.
