The Mama's And The Papa's - California Dreaming' - 45 RPM ORIGINAL HOT MONO MIX

Вставка
  • Опубліковано 14 січ 2012
  • Original Dunhill Records #4020
Debut 1/8/1966 and peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
Featuring the POWERFUL original hot mono mix rarely heard today, as Dunhill Records destroyed most of their mono masters in the early 70's. Only the common stereo mix is heard today.
This is the version that made this record a hit on AM radio.
This is what we heard on Musicradio WABC when this was at the top of the charts in 1966!

It's sad that the modern music industry don't make good music like this anymore

Jack Chang Everybody like to make money and to a degree even in the days of the Mamas and Papas it was true but nothing like it is today. Its a huge PR corporate feeding frenzy churning out mostly here today gone tomorrow bullshit. There is still good music being made but it represents only a small percentage. The groove of the 60's is long gone. Look at the album covers most of the groups are smiling. Now that look like someone burned down their house.

Look harder. People always look at the surface industry when there's good music if people are willing to actually look.

Absolutely love the charm that comes with original mono mixes, especially on record. The sound is incredibly connected and smooth yet the distortions make powerful performances even more powerful. The reverb is spot-on and mesmerizing, giving this sense of a larger sound stage such as that of a grand cathedral especially when coupled with complex harmonies and instrumentation. I really appreciate it!

Barry McGuire actually sang the lead on this "hit" version and his vocal was overdubbed by the rest of the group. In the first line, "All the leaves are brown" you can hear a reverb...that is Barry's vocal still on one channel and overdubbed by the voice of John Phillips.

    • @dunhillpeace
      @dunhillpeace 4 роки тому +2

zman291977 true story... although Barry’s version of Phillips song was removed before it was even released for the group to perform themselves and Denny took the lead. If you hear the stereo version you can still hear Barry

We had a local oldies station that used to play this and many others with one channel of the audio missing. And if are familiar with the stereo vision, the vocals are split between the left and right channels, which makes it unlistenable with half the group missing

Yes - It's true - ABC Dunhill not only destroyed the mono master, but the original multitrack recording as well. All that is now left is the stereo mix down and that is it.
Therefore, no other mixes can be made as the master tapes are gone. They did this to save space.
I believe the LP number is mono. If stereo, it would be either DS50006, or D50006S.

Records play more cleanly on a good turntable with a high quality magnetic cartridge. Also a clean record plays more cleanly.. light surface scratches are usually not audible on a smaller tip (stylus) since it tracks down deeper in the groove, where the stylus tracks the undamaged part of the groove.

may i just say that my favourite part about your posting is how the last 7 seconds are amplified. the ending of this song has always haunted me, in the best possible way, and whenever i buy a used copy of an lp or cd or 45, i always try to find a version that takes the longest time to trail off. it really seems to depend on who compiled or mixed a particular album to hear if the ending gets cut off or not, but this was just wonderful. thank you.

The LP and EP from my country (Brazil ) I know it's Mono, but the American is my question , it marks : D50006 . This means that it is mono or stereo ?

Bad a job as Dunhill did messing up Mamas and Papas hits when taking them from mono to stereo, the most god-awful mess I ever heard was the stereo version of Gary Lewis & the Playboys Greatest Hits. In stereo form, ALL the music had been moved into the left channel and ALL the vocals iso'ed into the right. It's horrible - and a crime commited against a string touchstone pop confections of the middle 60s. Avoid it all costs.

the instrumental sounds much better than the stereo version
but yeah, there's something very ASMRy about how the vocals seem to call and respond to one another
gives it a bit of a round characteristic
