From 5:03 there is kind of a klezmer feel to it... I never considered it before but erhu might actually make a good substitute for violin and similar instruments in klezmer music specifically.
Just got my first Erhu a few days ago.. For such a simple instrument it's HARD!!! Don't be put off though, it's absolutely beautiful. Such a natural sound!!!
Wow I am so impressed... I've been debating whether or not to invest in an erhu and dedicate my time to learning how to play it. Didn't realise how diverse it could be, so I think I may just take the plunge and buy one :)
I bought myself an erhu snd I'm shocked at how easy I've found the basics. I decided to just teach myself. In at the stage were I need a teacher now though
Still no progress since my last comment... I have moved to university and didn't want to bring it with me as I thought it would be safer at home haha X)
Just before you're mind starts wandering off to thoughts, she changes the pace and everything and brings you back to appreciating what she's playing. I loved it.
@loksim I've studied cello for almost 20 years and I decided to take a crack at the Erhu because I thought it would be similar and my skill would translate over. I was wrong. It's VERY HARD :P
I know a Erhu maker who was Master graduated from University in Erhu major in China (he is Chinese so am I). He sells hand make private custom Erhu with top quality (like aged red wood) but much lower price compare to retail price. If you willing to spend more than 1000 CAD for this instrument it will be a good option. You can also buy a cheap one just for fun or decoration in your house on amazon I believe. Maybe try search it on website like Kijiji (not sure which country you are from), I believe there will be some Chinese international students in your area want to sell their Erhu.
@5:03 - @6:04 is that actually a song or she is just improvising?... if it's a real song it would be great to know its name... P.S. She is such a great musician and a beautiful woman of course.
The erhu and the Korean haegeum have similar origins. The main difference seems to be that the Korean haegum base is usually round like a small drum and one end open. The sounds are the same - a haunting sad sound.
Compliments to Yang Xue on her playing, loveliness,
and carrying on the erh-hu tradition
Holy shit her intonation is so good
So ripping, rad, and emotive. And very great showcase of techniques (in the "breakdown" sections). Super inspiring. Thank you!
I absolutely love this instrument. Some day I will buy one and commit myself to learning it.
Is it the day ?
In the last song, she was having lots of fun :)
Playing with heart and soul This is awesome Erhu player.
I WANT AN ERHU NOW .
It's absolutely beautiful. There's a quality not unlike the human voice in the sound of an erhu.
Beautiful but... 4:42 What is that? haha
It's just to demonstrate what sounds an Erhu can make and what techniques are used.
farting with the erhu - brilliant!
Yang Xue is great! I love her style of playing!
the erhu is absolutely heartwrenching
I think this is some of the most in-tune erhu playing I've heard

Lovely.. it was very pleasing to listen to
Beautiful to listen to and to watch.

David Bell Brougham trust me, it's better to watch than play.

+David Bell Brougham So how are things going?

Beautiful instrument and sound! Where can I buy one of these? How much do the cost?
You can find them in certain folk stores and online - I'm not sure where you're from, but a store near me in England costs around £95 :)

Ilker Bayindir You need to see an Otolaryngologist; something's wrong with your hearing. Did you recently have a stroke?
Capture that mosquito! I'll be its manager and we'll make a fortune!
Well, that's one musically talented mosquito.
Bet she has fingers like rocks.
