Her perspective on mohiniyattam is completely wrong Every kind of music and thalas are used. The only drawback is speedy jathis. But there are rhythmic jathis in sudha nrittha pieces. She is condemning and belittling an art ... A real artist will not do that...Art can never compete with art as she says. Before commenting so authoritatively on an art, she should have atleast watched a couple of recent mohiniyattam dancers who have beautifully choreographed poetry, Javali, folklore , poetry and what not... Didn't expect that from you, such a celebrated dancer. Shows how shallow you are... And moreover, no mohiniyattam dancer has 'cribbed' about not having jathis. All of them (starting from Santa rao,kanak rele and Bharathi shivaji who were non malayalees attracted to this art... to neena prasad and vinitha nedungadi who were well versed in bharathanatyam but chose mohiniyattam just due to the love towards it) voluntarily took up the art form due to sheer love towards it and due to the responsibility towards their own dance form. They too could have gone for some other dance form easily as Shoshana herself has done(being a Keralite, though conveniently pretends otherwise always) . Lastly, mohiniyattam requires a totally different set of energy levels (speed is not the only demanding thing of a dance form). The chuzhippu or stretches are mostly reminiscent of Yogasana and hence demands a highly flexible body. Sopana Sangeetham is NOT the only music for it... It shows your ignorance Ms Shobhana, and please abstain from making such irresponsible and irreverent comments on something you are completely at loss.
Well said, Roopa. I don't understand the need to disrespect another art form like this. The person interviewing her has also confessed multiple times that he is biased against Mohiniyattam. Scholars and artists like these insist on minimizing it and put limits on it by saying jathis don't work in it, complex rhythms don't work in it etc. Unlike what Shobhana says, I am sure a Marathi abhang can be beautifully danced in Mohiniyattam. My guru Dr. Neena Prasad has done complex rhythmic patterns in many of her choreographies. Mohiniyattam is a more sensitive form which needs a mature dancer to pull it off well. And like you said, the energy is used differently with lot of control in the core. Also, one cannot watch every art form with the same eyes. BN dancers love to say they can do anything in BN. One can see anything from folk dance to Koodiyattam and even Mohiniyattam introduced into Bharatanatyam. Is it still Bharatanatyam in that case or something else?
