I used to do the same thing, up to 5 rinses. Brush still went hard. Found that you need to use dawn on the brush and wash out the thinner from the bristles. You squirt soap on brush and work it in. Rinse and repeat until the soap produces plenty of suds. Dawn won’t produce suds when thinner is still in brush.

Try using kerosene instead of paint thinner, it’ll keep the brush soft

Did you do that when your brush was still wet. My brushes are rock hard. No joy with turps

I wish I have the patience to clean my brushes when I use one. Usually end up in the trash can. I will use this method next time. Thanks.

I've cleaned out my brush with a similar process, however I'm finding after a day or two, the brush is still damp.
How long does it take for the brush to dry (of the mineral spirits) to be used for the next use?

typically mine are dry the next day. try tapping the excess thinner out before you hang dry or wrap it up.

I used white/mineral spirit on a water - based paint brush. It got hard. How do I clean it?
Do I need to use paint stripper on it, or is there a different way.

Might have to toss that one. There are a few companies that make brush wash. Krud kutter brush wash is available at home Depot, that'll probably work but by the time you buy that and spend an hour cleaning it, might just replace it 🤷‍♂️

@@jacobbresson9031 Thx. I didn't realise it back then that u don't mix water with mineral spirits.

you can, but the harsher solvents can distort the brush filaments/bristles

I do it basically the same way , but finish with a couple of washes with detergent and water...Also, I always clean the ferule and handle as well...
At least in the UK, there seem to be two broad types of "professional" painter and decorators: those that never seem to clean anything and every tool or bit of equipment is covered in multiple layers of paint and splatter, and second type who are meticulous in their clean up, and their general approach to the job. Sadly, the latter seem to be a minority....

First, the solvent is not the base for any paint, is the medium, and all mediums have solvents, water is a solvent too. So you mean organic toxic solvents.

Pro painters don't clean oil brush out as a rule ,you have one tin of white and one of colour.

He said Pro. Meaning he paints everyday. Probably keeps them in a brush safe or a bucket of water. Smear thinned down grease in the brush and it isn’t necessary to get it whistle clean.
