These are my favorite topics. I wasnt alive and haven’t watched dozens of hours of footage, but the business of promoters and their strategies is so interesting to me.
Well , lets say Bill Watts, in hindsight, decided to sell the UWF to Jerry Jarrett instead of Jim Crockett. Would things have gone better for both the CWA and the UWF? Regionally, it would have made more sense, and would have been the next logical territory for Jarrett to expand to. The second option would have been for him to sell to Fritz Von Erich since they were just "down the street", but the Von Erichs were having a hard enough time just trying to maintain their own territory
In an attempt to expend, WWF spent their money on headline talent and TV time while JCP spent their money on dead territories. IMO JCP was the superior wrestling promotion because of it's realism over WWF's high product but highly cartoonish product. That being said, WWF business plan superior in every way and JCP basically committed suicide.
UWF television was red hot in 1986, even subsequently in the absence of JYD. It was the WWF opening its checkbook and more reliance on tired World Class talent that did them in.
I believe Bruce made an excellent statement when pointing out the costs when trying to expand outside established regions with little in return. David Crocket made similar statements about Mid-Atlantic and how they would still be around if not going into New York. It seems Dusty and Bill Watts wanted to be Vince McMahon and either didn't have the luck or business sense. Going national was also a trend in pro wrestling by 1986. Even with the Fulkers in the southeast began referring to the territory as Continental. Ridiculous!
I do agree with Bruce Here about why the mid south going national didn’t work. Some of those mistakes are the same. Jim Crockett would also make and later on Eric Bischoff would make but other things happened that save WCW for the time.
Eric Bischoff loves to say that he shouldn’t cater to Greensboro or Charlotte because “well we weren’t doing any numbers at the time so why should we cater to them? “
Well, yes, that’s true but what numbers you are doing that’s where it’s coming from. And it’s not really that you need to look for different people. That was never the reason why. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Chicago or Los Angeles and if you’ve got the top 10 pro wrestlers in the world in your territory. If the person running, the company is booking things terribly, it doesn’t matter.
The other thing that I think Jim Crockett messed up on here and I’m not saying he needs to do what Vince McMahon did for the sake of doing what Vince McMahon did. But when Vince McMahon bought out a territory, he only spent money one time. He spent the money for the initial buyout, and then all he did was start airing his product in the other territories, timeslot in those cities. That’s the correct way to expand.
What Jim Crockett started doing was buying territories like Midsouth and championship wrestling from Florida but instead of just putting his syndication television shows on those channels so now those people would be watching the mid Atlantic show. He bought the companies and then he decided that they were going to spend more money to run these territories that he bought that we’re having trouble staying afloat in the first place.
I never understood why you would buy a wrestling territory if you were Jim Crockett and you had one of the biggest and best territory going that your plan was to buy a failing territory and just keep it going. I think that decision hurt them financially more than buying a second jet.
It’s OK to expand and this is where I think Eric kind of really did drop the ball like dude there’s nothing wrong with going to Chicago or Salt Lake City or Los Angeles but take care of your Home fans first. When Vince McMahon expanded, CW wasn’t going to go run the garden in New York City. When Vince expanded, he still took care of the northeast and also went to new cities. It seems like in the south where all the promoters or Eric Bishop couldn’t understand was they thought expansion meant get rid of one group for another group of fans and that’s not expansion you’re just trading fans at that point.
Bruce proves he is a dipshit here.

I thought UWF was part of JCP already. So he,Bill Watts was independent and trying to outdo Vince at what he was doing. I should have realized because he sold that to JCP. He had a lot of superstars and lost them all and his company.

The UWF was a GREAT rebrand! Watts may not have managed the business well and tried to grow too fast; however, the UWF was great while it lasted.
