  • Dungeons and Dragons Eldritch Blast is my attempt to capture what I think the spell eldritch blast would look like in real life.
When playing DnD, I usually play fighter-based characters, but I often imagine what all the cool spells look like when my party members are conjuring and casting.
What about you? Do you favor wizards, warlocks, and sorcerers? Do you prefer fighter-type classes? If you are doing the spell casting or watching them fly past you, it's fun to imagine what they actually look like.
That's what this video is all about. Here is my interpretation of the dungeons and dragons spell eldritch blast. I would love any suggestions for spells you would like to see in the future.
    Thanks for watching and enjoy.

I like them all a lot, but am partial to the beam! The blue beam is my favorite haha.

Eldritch Blast is definitely purple and not blue, Warcraft making warlock purple definitely fixed that idea into my head.
But, I also think that everyone would probably cast it slightly differently, so aside from the non-beam one, they are all technically canon.

I appreciate the effort you put into really trying to capture the spells accurately. I'm a new D&D player, and this is a really cool way to help me immerse myself in the game!

Just reminder that eldritch blast commit FORCE damage,
I take This like the kind of force in star wars, and i kinda like to see it like an aberration magic, a black chaotic beam that shots like if space itself were broke and provoque and intense 1d10 force repulsion, it also happen with some invocations that can push 10feet away the target

    • @therangersworkshop8165
      @therangersworkshop8165  3 роки тому +2

That's a really good point. Maybe the target (in this case the haystack) should get blown back quite a ways. Harder to do with visual fx but probably how it should be. Thanks!

Eldritch Blast is such a powerful cantrip and, considering the Eldritch Invocation you can use to empower it, a really interesting one as well! I always imagined it as a purple beam, very close to your third interpretation, although I like your second interpretation even better. The purple swirl around the orange beam looks so fancy.
I'm just wondering about one thing you didn't show in this video: what about higher levels? How do they look? Since higher levels create multiple beams, the situation is pretty similar to Magic Missile. Are all three beams fired simultaneously? Or one after the other? I always imagined them to be in a quick succession since you have to make an attack role (and therefore aim) every one of them separately

Hey Kaik! Sounds like you've played a Warlock? You know this spell way better than I do. I imagine it being more purple too which is probably why I ended up with two purple-themed versions... I thought a bit about adding a few beams but chickened out. I was a bit concerned / stumped about how I would pull it off so I decided to leave it with just the one. Maybe I'll give it another go in the future and try to do more beams... I appreciate your thoughts on this and your ideas make a lot of sense. Thank YOU!

@@therangersworkshop8165 well, you could say so :D
I'm almost always the Dungeon Master and two of the reoccurring villains of my so far longest campaign were Warlocks. I don't have as much insight into the class as a player would have but I know some basics. But that's basically the case for almost every class
And yeah, I understand that felt unsure about showing a higher level version, I don't have a clear concept how it would look either. I always envision it as one big beam when multiple beams of the beams are casted at the same target but that's technically not true since you have to roll for attack three times

why is purple such a popular color for eldritch blast? is there something im missing about dnd lore that would make it purple?
in my head its either a very like toxic green, or a icy cold blue with some near black accents

Everyone imagines it as colorful rays but isn't force damage supposed to be exactly that FORCE. I thought it was more like sparky boom boom man from avatar the last Airbender

As a blast, more thunderous like lightning I imagine. A blast would make things explode. This is too mild.

I imagine the visual effect of each Eldritch Blast depends on your patron. For example, that blue beam would work well for the Celestial pact, the flaming one corresponding to Fiend, etc. With my personal favorite (the Undead pact), the beam would probably have a bile-like sickly green color.

I see it very different. I also am a huge fan of "spell flavor", so I believe each caster's spells look a bit different. like a necromancer casting magic missles, the missles may look like bones or skulls.
With Eldritch Blast being a force damage spell, I don't see, in my theater of the mind, a ray like you displayed. I see at as though, the warlock casts and the line simply appears as raw force. leaving the crackling "otherworldy" energy behind.
    like an interdimensional punch.
I guess in some ways, I see it as though he finger guns ballistic arcane?
with your longer beam casts, it looked to me like it's a "the longer you hold it on something the more damage you do."
`shrugs` and no one's wrong, but i just love my BOOM LOVECRAFT LASER!!!
I recently started baldur's gate 3 and I think they did a FANTASTIC job for eldritch blast. but it's much louder than i figured, makes sense being force though.
sorry, nerdy ramblings from an archaic THAC0 using bastard!

I love to nerdy ramblings! Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I'm not stranger to THACO but I'm sure glad we don't use it anymore!
I love the comments and I also like the idea that different spell casters magic can look different depending on who they are and what they focus on. Very cool ideas.
I'm starting to think that there are endless ways to display this spell so maybe I'll have to do another video with yet more variations. Could be fun.
Thanks for your comments. I really enjoyed reading what you've shared here. Have a great week and I hope you roll a bunch of 20's!

I think Eldritch Blast is like shooting short purple laser beams, similar to the laser shots from a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter. Of the three, combine the duration of the first blast with the blue, twisting beam, but color it purple. Nicely done.

Okay, I dig all three beams for different reasons. I like the rotating arcing energy on the blue beam. I like the contrasting colors of the orange beam with the purple arcs, and I like the pure color and energy force of the purple beam. Awesome stuff. May I have another, please? ha ha

  • @ntay28

Awesome!! It's tough to choose a favorite. I've always imagined the timing to be quick, more like the "blast" rendition you showed first, rather than a sustained beam lasting multiple seconds, but each of those beam variations look great. I also envisioned the beam to be smaller, indicating less power, since it's a cantrip and not a high level spell, but Kaik's reminder that it can be powered up by invocations makes me really like how your portrayed it.

    • @therangersworkshop8165
      @therangersworkshop8165  3 роки тому +1

Thanks Nathan! Yeah, it does look pretty powerful! Doesn't it? I thought.....maybe I'm making this TOOO powerful? Eh....it was fun making it and it's hard for me to hold back a little on some of this stuff.... The problem will be when I get into the higher level spells. How to make them look EPIC enough.... HAHAHA!

I do apologize for the massive amount of text.
I kind of imagine it as able to kind of curve and bend like arcs of electricity. Generally, I’ve always preferred it to be something without a fully stable shape so that it can be described in a variety of ways. From Iron Man’s repulsor beams, to Force Lightning, to the wand beams in Harry Potter, to the lightning beams in the Shazam film, to Danny Phantom’s ghost rays, to Dragon Balls ki/power beams, to Star Trek phaser beams, and so on.
When I’ve played as someone who cast it, it’s usually been portrayed as more of a brief discharge that stretches and extends from the hand toward the target rather than a sustained and continuous stream (meaning it can be imagined as in a more burst fire/scatter shot/gunslinger type manner). In essence, it can be a more of a combination of the “burst” animation and a similar design to the “beam” animation.
Still, just as it’s described in the writings, mine was still roughly beam-like rather than a segmented bolt and could fire from palm, fist or just the fingers (meaning that one can imagine more than one beam being fired at the same time from different parts of my character’s hand like Force Lightning). If anything, a sustained beam is something saved for a description of a finishing blow to make it more epic and dramatic. Conversely, if ever the attack or damage roll is low, I usually portray that as being reflected in the beams' appearances, particularly making them smaller, thinner, and weaker looking if the damage is low or having the shot graze or glance off the target if the attack roll is low.
Since the guy I play is a War Caster with a shield and hammer, an added detail was that the energy can kind of surge around his hand or fingers like an aura (in a similar vein to Danny Phantom, Captain Marvel or Scarlet Witch) and ignore whatever he’s holding, allowing him to shoot his beams (which are ominous red and sometimes shaped kind of jagged and crooked to reflect his negative feelings and less than stable mental state) even with something in his hand and said beams can split and branch off into separate beams (i.e. the Shazam film). I’ve seen portrayal where such an aura, or more specifically the energy that surges and flickers in the characters hand as they prepares to form their beams or holds an action to do so as be used as an intimidation display or a general show of power without actually firing or discharging any beams if desired (similar to the parts of animation where the energy gathers in your hand).
Like I said, it’s appearance can be subject to change.
Regardless, it’s one of my personal favorite D&D spells.

Considering that spells can be customized, I love all of yours. My personal take on it is like a build up, then an instantaneous crackling arc that travels all the way between locations. One of my great old one warlock character ideas involves seeing brief glimpses of the far realm and the horrors in the flashes of the blast. Like the blast itself is a mini tear in the world that lasts just long enough to get a glimpse through it.
