After watching this I realized whenever we get a hard and challenging fight in a pokemon game, people praise it not because of the presentation or build-up to the fight, but because it’s a challenging and a hard to beat boss
Tbh I think boss battles in recent games have been the best. The battles against the AI Professors are fairly challenging in that you don't know the types of their Pokemon before you start. Combine that with their ace having a booster energy, they can be pretty challenging, not to mention the atmosphere around the fight is hype as well. Same as Volo, effectively having 8 Pokemon and being a good twist villain making for a good final boss, and the fight against Arceus after is pretty challenging as well. Finally, Kieran I feel takes it to a whole nother level, being a fight hyped up across 2 DLCs where he has perfect IVs, EVs, competitive movesets, a competitive team in general, and held items, uses weather and teras his ace in a strategic way, I feel like he does genuinely utilize all the mechanics in the game in a culminating way that feels like a fitting "final boss"
On the topic of spin-off boss battles, I think the Greevil fight in XD poses a good challenge, albeit for a different reason. The whole point of the game is to snag Shadow Pokémon, and almost all trainers have a single one to snag, so it's natural to try getting them all. But Greevil has an entire team of powerful Shadow Pokémon, including three Legendaries, so even if you didn't use the Master Ball on Shadow Lugia, trying to snag all six of his Pokémon in that initial battle would be quite difficult.
I somewhat agree but I sadly got spoiled and didn’t struggle much in his fight. It was cool and unique for him to have 6 Pokémon when no one else but the player could have 6 in pla then giratina suddenly showing up and you had to fight him in both forms. After the fight it said “you Finally defeated Giratina” or something like that like they knew this would be a crazy fight. I wish I struggled more honestly because he was probably the most serious and important fight in the game other than dialga/palkia. The way it starts with the familiar piano and him sending out spiritomb. I’d say his fight was almost perfect but I personally didn’t get to experience it the intended way. I also loved Arceus’ boss fight and how his theme got faster and faster throughout the fight until it started glitching (which I wish affected the gameplay and wasn’t just for the music) and I found him to be an actual challenge even with my Pokémon being very high levelled. I also wish arceus would change types during the player throwing balms part and his attacks had slightly different effects depending on his type. Maybe that would make him too hard.
i think all legendaries should be a boss battle with a guaranteed capture afterwards, catching as a purely rng-based mechanic is very dated in my opinion and the only real argument i see for still throwing 25 ultra balls until it works is that it "used to be like that"
No mention of my boy Wally? You beat up a sick child’s underleveled ralts and then forget about him for the rest of the game. Wally however did not forget, and began his epic rocky training arc so he can jump you at victory road with a full competitive team complete with gardevoir who can double team and calm mind sweep. May/Brendan just kinda gives up halfway through your journey while Wally was the true rival all along.
Pokémon bosses should be able to break the rules. Like Volo having 8 Pokémon. Give them lvl 105 Pokémon, or any other unfair advantages. Pokémon one of the only games where the enemies can't break the rules
As much as I love pokemon, I have to acknowledge that as popular as it is, the series is FULL of missed potential when it comes to gameplay/features. Pokemon company/game freak seem to be content shooting for lowest common denominator and I don't see that stopping as sales continue to climb :(
My issue with the formulaic approach to most bosses is that it strips down fights that had insane potential to be interesting. I don't care if geeta is the easiest champion, she's not even the final boss after all. But having her scripted last pokemon be one that's literally designed to be a status lead is a slap in the face. They could've easily made that work too if they weren't so bent on sticking to rigid rules. Glimmora could've been a lead that instantly terastalizes, sets down spikes with their ability, and switches out to he used later. That would've actually showcased geeta's idea of not holding back while also playing with the players expectations. But they just had to stick to the rigid rules of the ace always being last and the last always being terastalized, and considering the professor didn't even have tera for their main fight geeta just feels so lame.
26:12 geeta doesn’t count she wasn’t the final battle Nemona was Also I enjoyed trace No she isn’t leave her alone There’s more to being a good champion than just being a good battler She’s classy kind elegant graceful composed She’s well written in terms of lore she has a presence throughout the story she helps us a lot in the games Also she took out half my team so she’s not that bad Also you guys think every champion after Cynthia is the worst champion So I’m not taking that seriously Like the boy who cried wolf People are ridiculous it’s not that they hate her they just think she’s strict and she is cuz she cares She’s very classy and respectable and she likes to be very professional and organized They look at her from an outside perspective they never actually try to get to know her like Nemona or clavell or the protagonist does The gym leaders gossip without knowing her they know her but not in a deep way It’s like when people gossip about the popular girl and make assumptions about her when they know this image of her but not who she actually is fans: man gamefreak should really spotlight other pokemon instead of just forcing Charizard down our throats enough with the Gen one pandering Also fans: geeta used gogoat and avalugg. Ultra Necroznan isn't a good example of a good boss, it's poorly designed trash that I'd put next to the Bed of Chaos from the original Dark Souls in terms of quality (widely considered to be FromSoftware's worst boss, even if i consider that to be Malenia). That fight is just cheap and not well-designed, considering that the level jump is 10 levels, the next level 60 you'll face will be your rival's ace in the final battle of theain game. Its not because the fight is hard that I hate it so much (the 3k+ hours in FromSoftware games should tell you that i like a challenge), its thst the difficulty comes from the wrong reasons: cheap and artificial readons as opposed to organic reasons. The problem is that in the mainline games your opponent is playing with the same tools/rules that you have, while this can be effective (see Cynthia, Kierin), it limits what you can do. You can't go giving people in-game stuff that the player will never have access to in the mainline games (spin-offs that's an option), plus the AI rarely ever switches out, even in downright TERRIBLE matchups, the only workaround to that would be a VoltTurn team (my favorite type of team) where every mon has a move that causes them to switch out, think Elsesa from Unova or Watson from OR/AS. The fact that the AI almost never switches is a big thing holding it back, but that's a can of worms to work in as well because it could feel like, for the lack of a better term, input-reading if handled poorly. Also mono-type teams aren't a problem, the composition on the other hand is. Monotype is a competitive format on Pokemon Showdown!, and whole some types are better than others, a good monotype team would be built around having answers to the types it's weak to. Yes some important options would be missing for obvious (legendaries, mythicals, Ultra Beasts, Paradox, old event moves), but it can be done. Movesets are another big factor in making monotype teams more challenging, give them moves which either mitigate or outright counter the types that they're weak to. Plus the most difficult opponent will ALWAYS be another person because they can predict what you're going to do and react accordingly: they won't stay in an unfavorable matchup and let their mon be one-shot by a super-effective move unless it was a bad prediction, like expecting you to go for a move that would hit the switch-in for SE damage instead of the mon that's currently in. The human element elevates the franchise's battle system to a whole other level, the mind games can go f**king hard. Keeping a Gligar in against a Nidoking that knows Ice Beam could be s****dal, but you could also save your Steel type from taking an Earth Power on the predicted (and obvious) switch for example. These mind-games that make battling another person so engaging aren't really practical to implement in an AI. You'd need an EXTREMELY COMPLEX AI system to manage something like a battle that you'd see on Pokemon Showdown!, and that would be a lot of work without it feeling like the AI is cheating. So while battles in-game could be better, they'll never be able to match what another player is able to do, so there's a celing as to what mainline battles can do without making a F.E.A.R. level AI for NPC trainers. F.E.A.R. is an early 2000's FPS game with a legendarily good enemy AI system, papers have been published on it it's that good (I'm 100% serious about that) and not the Pokemon version of F.E.A.R. Tl;dr; while the battles can be made better, there's a limit to what they can do by following the same rules that the player plays by, plus a human opponent will almost always be better without a super complex AI to make a lot of complex decisions.
They don’t they are incredibly unique from a lore and story perspective From a gameplay perspective they have to keep the games approachable for beginner gamers They’re not gonna be “dark souls” Pokémon is very comfortable in its niche If that’s not something ur into maybe ur in the wrong fandom Also there’s no other series that really does boss battles the way pokemon does their approach is pretty unique I don’t think they suck they all have their own charm in a way What I said is probably a hot take but idc
Pokemon has some fairly good boss battles, but also some fairly bad boss battles. Honestly, even if we looked at Evil Team Leaders, I'd say Giovanni has the worst Boss battles despite being first gen, and it's even worse in UltraSun/UltraMoon where it's still his same Gym team only switching one Mon for Mewtwo. Pokemon on it's own should have boss battles that are fair for casuals but also be hard enough to act as a test. Take the gym leaders, elite 4, and champions of any regional game. Most of the hardcore fans would love it if the gyms were made much tougher and have IV and EV trained teams for them to take down, but you then lose out on the casual pokemon audience and the young kids who want to get into pokemon. Leave the harder fights as optional or even DLC. or have the final boss be tough but fair. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet honestly have very solid Boss fights and even Pokemon Legends Arceus as well. The final bosses are challenging but also fair. I haven't yet fought Kieran in DLC part 2, but I'm going to focus more on tackling the whole catching every single pokemon and evolving them more than actually fighting the elite 4 and Kieran. Honestly, he is going to be a tough fight. Volo for me was honestly a total joke, but that was because I was level 100... and I did kind of spend alot of time running around catching mons, but he was a blast to face off against. Even Arceus himself was a challenge and a worthwhile one at that. And I beat Arceus with all of his phases, and when I failed, I didn't go right to his checkpoint phases, I beat him in one go.
Nuzelockes are actually fine in their own right and are a challenge set by the player. Or even solo runs. If the game all of a sudden went from Brock and Misty having 2 pokemon to surge having a full team of 6 and him having the Legendary Zapdos on his team, and he has an Elektross with moves to counter ground types.... and he's the third gym leader, than that's a major problem for me. If he has an Elektross post game, I don't care, I'm fine with that. You've already beaten the base game, so now allow us the harder gym fights. Same with the elite 4 and champion. If BDSP had made the initial battles the first rematch fights and then the actual rematches maybe where if you completed the full pokedex, and challenged them again, you'd get the hardest versions of these fights, I'd honestly say BDSP would have been the greatest pokemon remake of all time. It's because of that endgame section why I actually put OmegaRuby and Alpha Sapphire above it. Let the player set the challenge themselves.
0:47 how can it be outdated if they invented it and they’re the only ones that use it because it’s unique to them so there’s nothing else to compare it to It’s just one of a kind it’s not outdated Nothing in the franchise is outdated because everything they use they created and is unique to them
Nah poor my ass SV are awesome If The lore was good The writing was good The music was good The vibes were good The messages were good The character designs were good That’s all you really need Also titans was awesome from a lore and story perspective Ur being needlessly cynical towards something unique
Problems shmoblems SV is a masterpiece If The lore was good The writing was good The music was good The vibes were good The messages were good The character designs were good That’s all you really need The rest is just superficial nonsense U guys need to reevaluate ur priorities Visuals, frame rate, art style are irrelevant People are too focused on superficial nonsense let’s be real u didn’t get into the original games for the graphics And If u didn’t play games for the graphics as a kid then why would u play them for the graphics now Sorry u forgot what the point of Pokémon was to begin with Pokémon is always meant to be an entry level jrpg maybe the people trying to hate on pokemon maybe they just aren’t into jrpgs If The lore was good The writing was good The music was good The vibes were good The messages were good The character designs were good That’s all you really need The series knows what it is and its niche(by niche I mean space) and what it wants to be and there’s nothing wrong with that and it doesn’t have to be anything else The mainstream audience doesn’t care about graphics or bugs or anything they just like to vibe People are just trying to make it something that is isn’t And something that doesn’t fit its style Maybe u don’t like Pokemon just aren’t into RPGs and that’s fine dont have to use that as an excuse to be toxic If its not ur thing just move on imo They’re gonna do their own thing and be their own thing in their own way Pokémon is always meant to be an entry level jrpg maybe the people trying to hate on pokemon maybe they just aren’t into jrpgs If The lore was good The writing was good The music was good The vibes were good The messages were good The character designs were good That’s all you really need The series knows what it is and its niche(by niche I mean space) and what it wants to be and there’s nothing wrong with that and it doesn’t have to be anything else The mainstream audience doesn’t care about graphics or bugs or anything they just like to vibe People are just trying to make it something that is isn’t And something that doesn’t fit its style Maybe u don’t like Pokemon just aren’t into RPGs and that’s fine dont have to use that as an excuse to be toxic If its not ur thing just move on imo They’re gonna do their own thing and be their own thing in their own way Calling pokemon “lazy” is lazy they got more to do than most devs they make two games and have to be symbiotic with the rest of the series and all this other stuff They can’t delay the game they have a symbiotic release system The games are leashed to the anime, tcg, etc and the anime, tcg etc is leashed to the games Tpc is constantly playing a game of jenga trying to balance each of its branches The games are in development for 3-6 years we just don’t feel it because a lot of times they work on multiple generations at the same time they have two teams the games have a 15-20 million dollar budget They probably share resources Maybe about the sharing idk They have been working on Gen 10 for a few years now Visuals, frame rate, art style are irrelevant People are too focused on superficial nonsense If The lore was good The writing was good The music was good The vibes were good The messages were good The character designs were good That’s all you really need Can’t believe people still care about that frame stuff I’m sorry people got so lost and brainwashed by the superficialities of the industry you forgot what Pokémon was originally about And I know that the game isn’t perfect and that there’s issues Pokémon is a franchise where the theme is friendship is magic and meeting cute and cool unique monsters What the hell does graphics and performance have to do with those things? Nothing if you wanna criticize a franchise criticize it on whether or not it delivered on the messages and themes it promised Was friendship magic? Did you meet cute and cool unique creatures? Ok then it’s a good game Those are what’s important to Pokémon As the og theme said Pokémon is about Oh your my best friend in a world we must defend I will travel across the land searching far and wide each pokemon to understand the power that’s inside Our hearts so true our courage will pull us through you teach me and I teach you” That’s what it is about and that’s what it will always be about and if that’s what it continues to be about until the end Then that’s a strong enough ending for me Not sure what graphics and animation and performance has to do with that Performance graphics those things never Mattered You have to remember pokemon games have only been 3D since 2013 that’s pretty recent compared to other games like Zelda that have been 3D since the 90s and early 2000s so obviously they’re gonna be behind Mixed with the fact that They can’t delay the game because main console for only 5 years compared to Zelda since n64 The franchise was designed so that every aspect of it has a symbiotic relationship The games can’t release without the anime the merch and the manga and the manga the merch and the anime can’t release without the games And it’s about time you all understand that by now They are doing their best trying to balance the games with the tcg and the anime The Pokémon franchise is like a game of jenga If you move one thing it all falls apart They are doing the best they can sorry I’m the only one who appreciates that Unless you want them to hypothetically release the Gen 10 anime and then wait till the anime gets to Gen 15 to release the Gen 10 games they are still learning as they go so y’all gotta be patient and give them time to catch up Their partnership with take two they’ll apply what they learn back into Pokémon so that’s good You have to remember gamefreak are inexperienced with developing open world games so of course there will be some trial and error the more they work on and improve the game and do future games the better at it they’ll get Rome wasn’t built in a day we need to be patient Assuming we get more open world games NOT TO MENTION ScarVi’s development was probably screwed up by the pandemic Probably turned it upside down And before u say just delay the game They can’t delay the game The franchise was designed so that every aspect of it has a symbiotic relationship The games can’t release without the anime the merch and the manga and the manga the merch and the anime can’t release without the games And it’s about time you all understand that by now They are doing their best trying to balance the games with the tcg and the anime The Pokémon franchise is like a game of jenga If you move one thing it all falls apart They are doing the best they can sorry I’m the only one who appreciates that Unless you want them to hypothetically release the Gen 10 anime and then wait till the anime gets to Gen 15 to release the Gen 10 games it’s not outdated it’s rebellious and nonconformist They choose to live in their own bubble and be one of a kind and not imitate what everyone else does and they have my respect for that Running shmunning
@@creature6715because it’s approach was rebellious compared to other franchises it tried something unique and different compared to its contemporaries That’s considered rebellious That’s your problem U guys see Pokémon as just a corporate product or any other series that’s either good or bad but it’s not that it’s more than that It’s a culture and a lifestyle a living breathing world with a story and lore and characters We form parasocial relationships with these fictional animals because we love them so much and they have so much personality and backstory Something can be designed to sell toys and still be unique and different Ur take doesn’t make sense
After watching this I realized whenever we get a hard and challenging fight in a pokemon game, people praise it not because of the presentation or build-up to the fight, but because it’s a challenging and a hard to beat boss

I was playing a romhack and N had a lvl 105 Zekrom. Pretty cool stuff

26:12 geeta doesn’t count she wasn’t the final battle Nemona was
Also I enjoyed trace
No she isn’t leave her alone
There’s more to being a good champion than just being a good battler
She’s classy kind elegant graceful composed
She’s well written in terms of lore she has a presence throughout the story she helps us a lot in the games
Also she took out half my team so she’s not that bad
Also you guys think every champion after Cynthia is the worst champion
So I’m not taking that seriously
Like the boy who cried wolf
People are ridiculous
it’s not that they hate her they just think she’s strict and she is cuz she cares
She’s very classy and respectable and she likes to be very professional and organized
They look at her from an outside perspective they never actually try to get to know her like Nemona or clavell or the protagonist does
The gym leaders gossip without knowing her they know her but not in a deep way
It’s like when people gossip about the popular girl and make assumptions about her when they know this image of her but not who she actually is
fans: man gamefreak should really spotlight other pokemon instead of just forcing Charizard down our throats enough with the Gen one pandering
Also fans: geeta used gogoat and avalugg. TRASH
All the haters are hypocritical af people should make up your minds
And you ask why they always spotlight Charizard cuz people shit on any other Mon they try to spotlight
I love that she spotlights overlooked mons it’s very different from other trainers and it makes her team one of a kind and unique and it sets her apart as someone who does the samething with their teams she has my heart for that
So haters leave her alone
Is it possible that Geeta is on the spectrum that would make her behavior make more sense
it’s almost like difficulty is irrelevant and that lore and worldbuilding is a bigger priority
Game mechanics side isn’t everything sometimes the lore is more important if geeta’s team benefits the lore then her difficulty is irrelevant
you need to learn to separate LORE from mechanics the two are in no way connected
She got better in dlc
bro
The gym leaders are cool and have a lot of personality and are well written lorewise
The paldea academy tournament was the battle tower
They’re already pretty entertaining and unique
A lot of people have come around to usum so not that controversial

21:27 in SV u didn’t even mention the second miraidon or the returning legendaries
Do raids not count as boss battles
They don’t they are incredibly unique from a lore and story perspective
From a gameplay perspective they have to keep the games approachable for beginner gamers
They’re not gonna be “dark souls”
Pokémon is very comfortable in its niche
If that’s not something ur into maybe ur in the wrong fandom
Also there’s no other series that really does boss battles the way pokemon does their approach is pretty unique

That’s what nuzlockes are for
It’s got versatile gameplay that’s part of the charm so many player options
0:47 how can it be outdated if they invented it and they’re the only ones that use it because it’s unique to them so there’s nothing else to compare it to
It’s just one of a kind it’s not outdated
Nothing in the franchise is outdated because everything they use they created and is unique to them
Pokémon is meant to be a cozy series it doesn’t need challenge also difficulty is subjective
5:14 Ramos is a wholesome lad
Totems weren’t ditched tho they stuck around in spirit via Gmax raids and titan battles which basically have the same idea
24:10 it’s not stale the school theme was a unique concept
Nah poor my ass
SV are awesome
If
The lore was good
The writing was good
The music was good
The vibes were good
The messages were good
The character designs were good
That’s all you really need
Also titans was awesome from a lore and story perspective
Ur being needlessly cynical towards something unique
Let’s go was designed to be approachable for go players
Ur being too harsh
Problems shmoblems SV is a masterpiece
If
The lore was good
The writing was good
The music was good
The vibes were good
The messages were good
The character designs were good
That’s all you really need
The rest is just superficial nonsense
U guys need to reevaluate ur priorities Visuals, frame rate, art style are irrelevant
People are too focused on superficial nonsense
let’s be real u didn’t get into the original games for the graphics
And If u didn’t play games for the graphics as a kid then why would u play them for the graphics now
Sorry u forgot what the point of Pokémon was to begin with
Pokémon is always meant to be an entry level jrpg maybe the people trying to hate on pokemon maybe they just aren’t into jrpgs
If
The lore was good
The writing was good
The music was good
The vibes were good
The messages were good
The character designs were good
That’s all you really need
The series knows what it is and its niche(by niche I mean space) and what it wants to be and there’s nothing wrong with that and it doesn’t have to be anything else
The mainstream audience doesn’t care about graphics or bugs or anything they just like to vibe
People are just trying to make it something that is isn’t
And something that doesn’t fit its style
Maybe u don’t like Pokemon just aren’t into RPGs and that’s fine dont have to use that as an excuse to be toxic
If its not ur thing just move on imo
They’re gonna do their own thing and be their own thing in their own way

Calling pokemon “lazy” is lazy they got more to do than most devs they make two games and have to be symbiotic with the rest of the series and all this other stuff
They can’t delay the game they have a symbiotic release system
The games are leashed to the anime, tcg, etc and the anime, tcg etc is leashed to the games
Tpc is constantly playing a game of jenga trying to balance each of its branches
The games are in development for 3-6 years we just don’t feel it because a lot of times they work on multiple generations at the same time they have two teams the games have a 15-20 million dollar budget
They probably share resources
Maybe about the sharing idk
They have been working on Gen 10 for a few years now
Visuals,frame rate,art style are irrelevant
People are too focused on superficial nonsense

Can’t believe people still care about that frame stuff
I’m sorry people got so lost and brainwashed by the superficialities of the industry you forgot what Pokémon was originally about
And I know that the game isn’t perfect and that there’s issues
Pokémon is a franchise where the theme is friendship is magic and meeting cute and cool unique monsters
What the hell does graphics and performance have to do with those things?
Nothing if you wanna criticize a franchise criticize it on whether or not it delivered on the messages and themes it promised
Was friendship magic?
Did you meet cute and cool unique creatures?
Ok then it’s a good game
Those are what’s important to Pokémon
As the og theme said
Pokémon is about
Oh your my best friend in a world we must defend
I will travel across the land searching far and wide each pokemon to understand the power that’s inside
Our hearts so true our courage will pull us through
you teach me and I teach you”
That’s what it is about and that’s what it will always be about and if that’s what it continues to be about until the end
Then that’s a strong enough ending for me
Not sure what graphics and animation and performance has to do with that
Performance graphics those things never Mattered
You have to remember pokemon games have only been 3D since 2013 that’s pretty recent compared to other games like Zelda that have been 3D since the 90s and early 2000s so obviously they’re gonna be behind Mixed with the fact that They can’t delay the game because main console for only 5 years compared to Zelda since n64
The franchise was designed so that every aspect of it has a symbiotic relationship
The games can’t release without the anime the merch and the manga and the manga the merch and the anime can’t release without the games
And it’s about time you all understand that by now
They are doing their best trying to balance the games with the tcg and the anime
The Pokémon franchise is like a game of jenga
If you move one thing it all falls apart
They are doing the best they can sorry I’m the only one who appreciates that
Unless you want them to hypothetically release the Gen 10 anime and then wait till the anime gets to Gen 15 to release the Gen 10 games
they are still learning as they go so y’all gotta be patient and give them time to catch up
Their partnership with take two they’ll apply what they learn back into Pokémon so that’s good
You have to remember gamefreak are inexperienced with developing open world games so of course there will be some trial and error the more they work on and improve the game and do future games the better at it they’ll get
Rome wasn’t built in a day we need to be patient
Assuming we get more open world games
NOT TO MENTION ScarVi’s development was probably screwed up by the pandemic
Probably turned it upside down
And before u say just delay the game
They can’t delay the game

it’s not outdated it’s rebellious and nonconformist
They choose to live in their own bubble and be one of a kind and not imitate what everyone else does and they have my respect for that
Running shmunning
Calling a coporate product designed to sell toys rebellious is fucking wild, lol
@@creature6715because it’s approach was rebellious compared to other franchises it tried something unique and different compared to its contemporaries
That’s considered rebellious
That’s your problem
U guys see Pokémon as just a corporate product or any other series that’s either good or bad but it’s not that it’s more than that
It’s a culture and a lifestyle a living breathing world with a story and lore and characters
We form parasocial relationships with these fictional animals because we love them so much and they have so much personality and backstory
Something can be designed to sell toys and still be unique and different
Ur take doesn’t make sense
